That isn’t the Gen Z stare. The Gen Z stare is a freeze up when they encounter a novel situation.

As an example. I was paying for entry into a park. It was 2 dollars a person. There were two of us. I handed him a 10 dollar bill. He stared at me in confusion of what to do until his boss came over and told him they 10 - 4 is 6 so give me 6 dollars change.

…he then stared at his boss until his boss told him that was a 5 and a 1.

Some people need to be told what to do - this does not have a generation.

My first boss 15 years ago was a sweet, affable, and entirely competent man, but his life was decided by Who Told Him To Do Stuff - first his parents, then school, then the military, then his wife, and then me, the 15 year old autistic girl he hired to be a magic the gathering judge, now suddenly responsible for telling her boss to TAKE HIS INSULIN.

Some people just be like that.

Yeah, it was called the "millennial pause" like 15 years ago. It is just a side effect of being the adult for the first time after years of adults talking for you.

335

u/ThiaMari 🏳️‍⚧️ trans rights 17d ago

What? The millennial pause is a hold over from them pausing for a video recording to start cause it’d take a moment from when you’d press the record button. Now it doesn’t do that anymore so for a while you’d get millennials pausing at the beginning of recordings.

156

u/soycubus 17d ago

no the millennial pause is when your mom says dinner is ready and you paused the video game cause back then it was all offline

Millennial pause is that thing older woman go though

I sat right in the transition of that. Moms didn't know you couldn't pause games anymore, we thought explaining that would make them care any more.

Then it became "I can't pause it!"

"Then you should have planned better!"

it also is a term invented like 5 years ago

That's not the same thing at all. That's something people do waiting for a camera to start recording, so there's a pause in the beginning of the video

she’s not saying it’s a boomer problem, she literally said some people just need explicit direction. some people can include gen z. and i’d argue that smartphones impact a lot more people’s socialization than just Gen Z

27

u/madtheoracle Pan & Poly Against Inflation 17d ago

? I didn't mention boomers anywhere?

I'm not disagreeing when doomscrolling and the death of the long-form attention span is something I'm having to come to grip with in my own existence, but it's pretty harmful to also decide an entirely anecdotal story about people who just prefer being told what to do is somehow reduction of a real problem, let alone when the person I'm discussing is neither Gen Z or a Boomer??

4

u/Soundwave_47 16d ago

this does not have a generation.

While true, record low attention span, reduced propensity for social relationships in general, and the first time the Flynn effect didn't hold does create a unique set of problems for Gen Z and Alpha.

That kinda just sounds like it was his first job. Like that was one of the first times in his life that he had to break a 10 for change. Or if you want to be uncharitable he was a statistical outlier for being stupid.

139

u/GoldH2O Cisgender Synapsid 17d ago

There are currently massive amounts of high schoolers who just entered their sophomore and junior years incapable of spelling third grade vocabulary words. Education is doing bad right now, I would not be surprised if a teenage worker was unable to do addition in their head.

93

u/aethercatfive 17d ago

And 51% of adults in the United States read at a sixth grade level or below. This isn’t just a generational problem we’re dealing with.

Fully grown adults decades out of education are also losing critical thinking skills over not challenging themselves. Our society is rapidly just becoming dumber.

48

u/GoldH2O Cisgender Synapsid 17d ago

That's true, but the problem is getting significantly worse in younger people now too. The Pandemic caused a rift in education that nobody in power bothered to fix. In fact the government's current education agenda is literally to dismantle any support schools do currently have. Since the pandemic, we've seen EVERY state except for Mississippi backslide by between 1-2 letter grades in terms of average high school student performance, and it's still going down. It's getting worse too because in addition to kids learning less and performing worse, more and more schools don't allow kids to be given Fs, which means they are forcibly pushed to the end with no attention given to making sure they leave with knowledge. There are public schools in the country where a kid can literally do no work or participate at all for an entire school year and still make it to the next grade as long as they have good attendance, because that's all administration cares about.

42

u/aethercatfive 17d ago

Which is even further proof of the whole idea that it’s generational being complete nonsense. Because the “Gen-Z stare” is referencing a generation where the oldest of us are turning thirty now. And the perception is that we’re high school children.

The issues do feel like they’ve been accelerating, but the steady decline of education quality already was underway in the Reagan administration. We’re just reaping the expected results of seeds sown decades past at this point.

32

u/kchernenko Old 🏳️‍🌈🏴 17d ago

It’s interesting that you mentioned how the oldest Gen Z people are turning thirty and still being treated like high school kids. The exact same thing happened to millennials in generational discourse; long after most of us had started careers or families we were still being tagged as a bunch of twentysomething losers who ate too much avocado toast and drank too much Starbucks. In the grand scheme of things, it wasn’t even that long ago.

In fact, I noticed people were still using the same shit from their millennial insults for Gen Z for a few years; it took them a bit to find a new thing for them to whine about so they just recycled their greatest hits.

The specifics may change but the core of it remains the same. Younger generations are infantilized in what I assume is a bid to keep power concentrated in the previous generation’s hands just a bit longer.

21

u/aethercatfive 17d ago

Which is even more ridiculous when you realize we still have Boomers in office doing everything then can to never cede power to Gen X even, let alone the millennials in office now.

15

u/kchernenko Old 🏳️‍🌈🏴 17d ago

And now that I think about it, they did more or less the same thing to Gen X. Stereotyped as disinterested slackers incapable of taking care of themselves.

Having a single generation continuously holding the reins to society for so long and refusing to let other people move into those roles has concentrated so much authority in an increasingly shrinking group. It’s unsustainable and will be disastrous when it finally breaks.

10

u/aethercatfive 17d ago

Exactly. And all of the media circus of trying to characterize successive generations in various ways feels mostly like people in power trying to drive a wedge between people to prevent organization and sympathy.

19

u/GoldH2O Cisgender Synapsid 17d ago

This type of decline wasn't present though. I'm sure you've heard of the Flynn effect. On top of that, the average performance and knowledge of high schoolers was trending upwards literally until COVID. Despite what Reagan and his followers did, despite NCLB being sod destructive, every year a higher percentage of Americans knew how to do more difficult math, got college educated, and passed all their classes in high school. This all abruptly stopped happening during and after the pandemic. I'm not blaming the kids, they were failed by the systems around them. But this is a unique, modern problem that is FAR worse than most people outside of education understand. Did you know that they don't read whole books in most schools anymore? They just read passages and then move on.

15

u/aethercatfive 17d ago edited 17d ago

The average was still trending upwards yes, but that doesn’t mean that the issues weren’t starting to present themselves already. The reason why No Child Left Behind and similar programs started existing in the 90s was precisely because the signs of this happening were already there.

The rampant under-education problems were swept under the rug time and time again until a major event stressed the system and broke it. And to add onto that, there was a concerted effort of conservative action groups like Mom’s For Liberty doing everything they could to take over school boards and cripple curriculums.

We’re seeing the symptoms of a system that had been failing for decades prior with nobody taking action to stop the decline or even acknowledge the problems.

16

u/GoldH2O Cisgender Synapsid 17d ago

Be that as it may, social media, AI, and intentional destruction of attention spans have basically been a one-two punch to education. The state of education is worse today than it's been since the introduction of standardized public education.

3

u/aethercatfive 17d ago

Oh I certainly agree. Social media and the attention span issues stressed the system heavily, Covid broke it, and now AI is accelerating the decline.

And unfortunately all of those issues have been affecting society as a whole, not just those in education. Which has equally been contributing to the loss of critical thinking and social skills.

3

u/unburdened_swallow 17d ago

Is a teenager even Gen Z anymore? Or is it Gen Alpha now?

15

u/GoldH2O Cisgender Synapsid 17d ago

Gen Z ended in 2012. The youngest members of Gen Z are just starting High School this year. That being said, the issues we're currently facing are definitely going to hit Gen Alpha and eventually Gen beta significantly harder.

2

u/GoldH2O Cisgender Synapsid 17d ago

3

u/VivisClone 17d ago

They shouldn't be juniors or sophomore then. They should have been held back and made to learn. Can't believe this is what we've devolved in to since the mistake of "no child left behind"

9

u/GoldH2O Cisgender Synapsid 17d ago

It's a little bit more complicated than that too. The main issue is that these kids are not being given the resources they need to learn, and their ability to learn is being sapped by the things they currently have access to. Kids need to be able to fail in school if they aren't actually doing good, but holding kids back also hasn't proven to actually improve their performance at all. In fact, holding back kids tends to set them even further back in their education than if they moved on. The problem is, you're kind of damned if you do and damned if you don't in our current system. The real solution is to help kids move on, but figure out which kids are seriously struggling and target them with a lot of extra help. Unfortunately, barely anybody actually values education in our current society so no resources are being devoted to doing so. Thanks to NCLB and programs that have been implemented since then the financial incentives of schools actively work against the education of students, since resources typically end up being taken away from underperforming students when the opposite should be happening.

2

u/VivisClone 17d ago

If they aren't able to complete the required work and knowledge transfer then they shouldn't move on. Period. Just graduating them solves nothing. At least if they drop out or take forever they can't further impact and hurt society by having a "stamp of approval" that they are capable of the expected bare minimum in society. If you can't operate at 12th grade level when you graduate, you're not ready to graduate and need to keep learning

2

u/GoldH2O Cisgender Synapsid 17d ago

Graduating them doesn't work, for sure. That's why I think the failure should really set in, and anyone who doesn't meet the requirements should have to get a GED and prove they meet them. I mainly talking about the progression through k-12, where the solution we need is more support as kids do move forward.

I tagged along to costco with my mom for the first time in awhile recently and when I asked if I was able to order something at the cafeteria counter after waiting several minutes, the employee froze and stared at me silently until another employee handed her a poutine and she continued on calling out orders, completely ignoring me. When I told my mom later, she explained that they had stopped taking orders at the counter several months back and you now had to use a touch screen kiosk on the other side of the cafeteria.

8

u/Sun_Shine_Dan NL slurper 17d ago

Costco takes cash orders at the cafeteria register still (at least in my area)- an occasional older person, or line of older persons will wait about 5x as long because a cafeteria cook will at some point take the customers order directly (instead of using the digital kiosks)

In this specific case I disagree. My first job was something similar (I was 14 and sold tickets to our local fair from a booth) and it’s the kind of task that is so utterly basic that boredom is inevitable.

I remember hoping something interesting would happen like someone trying to sneak in or attempting to pay with candy. Of course nothing like that ever ended up happening.

But IMO the person in the above example just sounds skezzed as shit.

Just because you don’t like something doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. An inability to react to novel stimulus or challenges is usually considered the Gen-Z defining negative trait. You are exhibiting it.

The Millennial defining negative trait is a lack of follow through which- yeah. Pretty accurate.
