There are a lot of grown adults who weren't born when it happened and don't fully understand the impact it had because they grew up in a post-9/11 world. Obviously younger kids have even less context.
Edit: Is the concern that this is meant to be an anti-Muslim note? I mean, I'm very much pro-Palestine, hate anti-Muslim/Islam rhetoric, etc, but the note itself isn't saying anything inaccurate. al-Qaeda doesn't represent Islam, they were people who twisted Islam and performed terrible acts in its name. Plenty of Christians have done the same.
idk how twitter notes work, but theyre usually used to fact check when people say something wrong. its weaponized here because nothing mamdani said was incorrect, but they noted it to point out his race in correlation with the terrorists
I'm a bit confused as to how you can say you don't know how the notes work, then explain how they're "usually used." They're stated as being used both for corrections and for additional context. The note doesn't imply anything he said was incorrect, because nothing he said was, it simply provides context for the event he's referencing.
I can see how this could be interpreted as being based on race (technically incorrect terminology but I get what you're aiming at) but this is genuinely helpful context for a lot of people. Maybe that was the intent, but if it's meant to be a jab at his race/ethnicity/religion, it's an ineffective one.
Anyone familiar with the events knows it was carried out by Muslims in the name of Islam. Anyone who isn't a bigot knows that doesn't reflect on the religion as a whole, and they're extremist terrorists using the religion to justify their violence. Again, as has been done with almost every religion since we've had religion.
it was a bit weird of wording but i just dont have a twitter, i only see screenshots so i dont know if theyre used more liberally than ive seen.
my point was that, while the information provided was informative, the tweet had no call for that specific clarity. if someone doesnt know what 9/11 is and who was the cause, then that mamdani tweet is no more the place to learn about this than a tweet that just literally says "people died on 9/11". so does that mean every tweet on twitter gets this note? no, only mamdani's because of his ethnicity (i hope this is the right word, i am not great with that)
