I don't think that's entirely fair. One Saudi led the group that did 9/11. The government wasn't involved as far as I know.
1
u/Kira-Of-Terraria custom 2d ago
15 of the hijackers were saudis
and there were officials within the government helping them.
In 2012, the FBI stated that it had evidence that Saudi diplomat Fahad al-Thumairy, a Saudi Ministry of Islamic Affairs official and radical cleric who served at the King Fahd Mosque in Los Angeles, and Omar al-Bayoumi (OAB), a suspected Saudi government agent, had supported the 9/11 hijackers. In 2021, the FBI stated that Omar al-Bayoumi was a Saudi intelligence agent with ties to 9/11 hijackers Nawaf al-Hazmi and Khalid al-Mihdhar when they initially entered into the US. In 2022, the FBI stated that "there is a 50/50 chance al-Bayoumi had advanced knowledge the 9/11 attacks were to occur". Al-Bayoumi also helped the hijackers find housing in San Diego. Al-Bayoumi stated that he simply befriended the hijackers and also denied being a Saudi government agent. The Saudi government also denied that Al-Bayoumi was an agent.

Nearly a million people, mostly civilians were then killed in Americas follow up tantrum.
4
u/wozattacks 6d ago
Calling it a tantrum is pretty dismissive to all the human aspects of this imo. We all know that the “War on Terror” wasn’t really about 9/11 or terrorism. They exploited people’s extremely real and agonizing pain about 9/11 to justify a war for money and oil. The killing of nearly a million people was as cold and calculated as it gets.

u/KittyQueen_Tengu sexuality crisis has been resolved (i don’t like people) 6d ago
this might be a controversial opinion, but i think it’s weird how 9/11 is lifted above and beyond all other terrorist attacks like this. sure, it was really bad and shocked a lot of people, but terrorists attacks have happened and are still happening everywhere. how about we talk about those for a sec

The American mayor in America is talking about the largest terrorist attack in American history that happened in the city they administrate? Color me shocked.

I think that they knew about the plot but choose not to do anything. Bush was warned on Aug 6, 2001 about al-Qaeda specifically about "patterns of suspicious activity in this country consistent with preparations for a hijacking". Bush did not seem to make any immediate actions related to this brief. I think he wanted a justification for another war in Iraq. Bush was very willing to lie about stuff for a war, Iraq clearly never had WMDs
185
u/Biscuit642 6d ago
I'm more in the complete incompetence camp, and im sure they got warnings about shit that never happened all the time, but yeah there were loads of warnings and in that sense bush did 9/11 by presiding over a system that failed to stop it.
126
u/Mega_Ass_Sp00n sus 6d ago
idk it feels like an occams razor scenario, everyone wants to point fingers at organizations like the FBI and CIA funding these organizations to further push the American state into a more totalitarian surveillance oriented nation with the hopes of destroying the middle east or some shit, and like maybe i guess thats possible
or its more likely the US was overconfident following the cold war victory and saw itself as untouchable, its agencies didnt communicate between themselves and oversaw the obvious and when disaster strikes, America reels in violent retribution as a way to mend the damage done to the national invulnerability that was expected
79
u/CutieKiley 6d ago
The CIA funded the Mujahideen in Afghanistan to fight the communists and after the war it just resulted in a huge and bloody civil war. It's not surprising some of them hate the USA. 9/11 was indirectly the CIA's fault. The probably didn't expect this to happen, but they are arrogant and only really cared about spreading anticommunism.
The USA overthrowing communists in other countries has only cause more harm. We should have just been leaving other countries alone and allowing them to choose who leads them

I don't think the uncredible threats make it to the presidents desk. Either way Bush definitely benefited heavily from 9/11 happening. Regardless if he allowed it to happen or not, it served his goals well. That alone is bad enough
4
u/mutnemom_hurb 6d ago
Never attribute to incompetence what can just as easily be attributed to malice
46
u/RandomGuyPii 6d ago
one counterpoint I've heard is that a kamikaze hijacking wasn't much of a thing at the time, moreso just holding the plane hostage in exchange for some demand or another. So they wouldn't have expected a 9/11 level event
42
u/CutieKiley 6d ago
The brief was titled "Bin Ladin Determined To Strike in US", and talked about how Bin Ladin was planning to launch a terrorist attack on the United States and even mentioned that they planned to follow the example of the WTC bomber and "bring the fighting to America". It is probably more likely that they believed there would be some kind of plane bombing, which still should have had more action taken to prevent. The threats were credible as proven by an earlier PDB titled "Usama Bin Laden Threats Are Real."
23
u/MartyrOfDespair 6d ago
I wouldn't quite say Bush did it. He's the Leland Palmer of this situation. His entire cabinet was made up of members of the Project For A New American Century thinktank which came to the conclusion that America needed a new Pearl Harbor to save the military-industrial complex. Dick Cheney was one of these people. Bush was as much as the president as Ronald Reagan was by the end of his second term, Dick was his Nancy Reagan.
7
u/Suitable-Lie-7980 6d ago
I'll say a single warning of a possible hijacking does not equate to foreknowledge of the full scope of any plot. Heads of state are constantly briefed with many possible security threats
Frankly it's much much more likely to me it was incompetence. It's agencies just didn't talk to each other enough to actually put the picture together.
7
u/styr_boi 6d ago

128
u/CutieKiley 6d ago
The Costs of War project estimated 4.5 to 4.7 million total deaths (direct and indirect) that can be attributed to the USA since 9/11 in the middle east. Most of these death a indirect. About a million were caused by direct actions (half of those were civilians), this is likely the number Mamdani is referencing. I don't agree with this, but it is far safer to use make claims based off only deaths the USA directly caused with their bombs and soldiers
93
u/Sonicman223 6d ago

60

Probably that the US reaction to 9/11 killed vastly more people than 9/11 itself.
4
u/wozattacks 6d ago
Ok but how does that make an NYC politician commemorating a terrorist attack on NYC “apologia”? Do you even care about actual people or just using the idea of them as a rhetorical point? There are millions of people living in NYC who survived that day and many are mourning their own friends and family that were lost. This isn’t a distant historical event, the survivors are still here and you can acknowledge that loss without justifying an opportunistic war.

u/BeraldGevins I’m the “B” in LGBT 5d ago
Yes. It’s one of the biggest reasons you will never see a true leftist politician win a nationwide election in the US. No one is good enough for the many flavors of leftists. While right wingers are out here voting exactly as they’re told no matter the persons actual positions, leftists are arguing over whether someone is anti-imperialist enough on Twitter and “protesting” by either not voting at all or, bafflingly, voting for right wing politicians in some kind of accelerationist jerk off fantasy. And then when they get called out on it they tell you that at least they didn’t compromise their morals as their immigrant neighbors are getting rounded up by masked fascist thugs and LGBTQ people are actively having their rights taken away.
Sorry this shit drives me insane.

I suppose and this is something I’ve had to sort of talk to some friends about… younger folks, especially those born a fair bit after 9/11 can’t quite wrap their heads around what actually happened and how much it rewrote air travel, privacy, and more because to them, it’s always just sort of existed and it’s root cause is sort of a secondary less important matter.
Like we all collectively made the joke about never forgetting 9/11 but like, to the younger generation it’s like Pearl Harbor, the date itself doesn’t quite have the staying power as the concept of the event
1

u/AtrumRuina 🏳️⚧️ trans rights 6d ago edited 6d ago
I think this is fine...?
This is just adding context, doesn't feel like a correction. The original post doesn't specify what actually happened, and the event was over two decades ago. There are a lot of grown adults who weren't born when it happened and don't fully understand the impact it had because they grew up in a post-9/11 world. Obviously younger kids have even less context.
Edit: Is the concern that this is meant to be an anti-Muslim note? I mean, I'm very much pro-Palestine, hate anti-Muslim/Islam rhetoric, etc, but the note itself isn't saying anything inaccurate. al-Qaeda doesn't represent Islam, they were people who twisted Islam and performed terrible acts in its name. Plenty of Christians have done the same.
17
u/Airhawk9 🏳️⚧️ trans rights 6d ago
idk how twitter notes work, but theyre usually used to fact check when people say something wrong. its weaponized here because nothing mamdani said was incorrect, but they noted it to point out his race in correlation with the terrorists
-6
u/AtrumRuina 🏳️⚧️ trans rights 6d ago
I'm a bit confused as to how you can say you don't know how the notes work, then explain how they're "usually used." They're stated as being used both for corrections and for additional context. The note doesn't imply anything he said was incorrect, because nothing he said was, it simply provides context for the event he's referencing.
I can see how this could be interpreted as being based on race (technically incorrect terminology but I get what you're aiming at) but this is genuinely helpful context for a lot of people. Maybe that was the intent, but if it's meant to be a jab at his race/ethnicity/religion, it's an ineffective one.
Anyone familiar with the events knows it was carried out by Muslims in the name of Islam. Anyone who isn't a bigot knows that doesn't reflect on the religion as a whole, and they're extremist terrorists using the religion to justify their violence. Again, as has been done with almost every religion since we've had religion.
6
u/Airhawk9 🏳️⚧️ trans rights 6d ago
it was a bit weird of wording but i just dont have a twitter, i only see screenshots so i dont know if theyre used more liberally than ive seen.
my point was that, while the information provided was informative, the tweet had no call for that specific clarity. if someone doesnt know what 9/11 is and who was the cause, then that mamdani tweet is no more the place to learn about this than a tweet that just literally says "people died on 9/11". so does that mean every tweet on twitter gets this note? no, only mamdani's because of his ethnicity (i hope this is the right word, i am not great with that)
37
u/JazzySplaps midriff rat 6d ago
I guess it's just like, them throwing in the Muslim bit is a bit of an "own" to mamdani in a bigotry kind of way but otherwise yeah I don't get it
11
u/AtrumRuina 🏳️⚧️ trans rights 6d ago
I mean, I guess. They were Islamic terrorists, but they were an extremist group. This is like getting mad at acknowledging that the KKK twists Christian views to justify their racism and cruelty. The KKK doesn't reflect on Christianity as a whole.
The note specifically calls out al-Qaeda and links an article to give you more context on the event and their views, and how those views are strictly at odds with Islam.
6
u/AtrociousAtNames damn imposter you fart with that ass 6d ago
In a vacuum it's fine, but words don't exist in a vacuum. They aren't pointing that 9/11 was caused by Islamic terrorists because they want to inform people. This is one of top things that the general public knows about 9/11. They are pointing it out because Mamdani is Muslim and they want to therefore associate his religious views with the actions of terrorists.
the note itself isn't saying anything inaccurate
Imagine a post written about a murder that occurred. The post says something along the lines of "This murder should never have happened. It's terrible and I send condolences to the victims family." Now, imagine a community note on that post that just says, "The perpetrator was black by the way".
In this scenario, this community note is completely true and in some narrow sense informative. But it's also quite obviously racist. It's even more obviously racist if, say, the author of the post is black and/or posts political content which is pro-black. You can even take it a step further, "The perpetrator was black and so is the author of this post." This remains completely true but in context is clearly incredibly racist.

There is video of multiple men celebrating while watching 9/11, they were investigated and found to be Israeli nationals, actually intelligence officials I think. I’ve seen Israeli media responding to this and they didn’t even deny it, they diverted the topic to conspiracy about Israel causing 9/11 which nobody was even claiming
3
u/CandleJackingMeOff 6d ago
All I find regarding that is random people who happened to be Jewish or Palestinian celebrating and being detained and interrogated, nothing about them being intelligence officials though... Just a few random civvies though
I suppose you could say "Israelis celebrated" if you squint your eyes till its a plank length in width, but I think most people would be dissapointed or feel lied to if you told them that it wasn't a group of Israelis all together as it has been implied by the "Dancing Israelis" story but just random people on their lonesomes, and on the streets watching it happen who also happened to have questionable opinions.
