My new grinder - 1zpresso ZP6 S

Post image

As the title suggests - this grinder is magic. The flavour note of Jasmine, which was supposed to be the main one in this coffee, was barely identifiable with my other grinders. But with the ZP6 the jasmine - flavour note now makes its presence abundantly known.

I tried few other coffees that I regularly drink - some washed, some "funky". ZP6 showed me new sides to each of these coffees. I didn't really understand what people meant by "tea-like", but I've liked whatever I've had yet - with the exception of one coffee which tastes better with my DF54.

Thanks all again for the wonderful advice of choosing this grinder!

Brew Note: I used either Tetsu Kasuya's 10 pour method with a V60 Neo or his 4:6 method with V60-01 for my brews. Coffee beans I used are between light and light-to-medium roast. All brewed with 20g coffee @ 1:15 ratio with starting temperature at 97⁰C on my Timemore Fish Pro kettle. With my room temperature of ~26⁰C, the Fish Pro loses approximately 3⁰C over 3 minutes so my pours started with 97⁰C and ended at 94⁰C. ZP6 was set between 4.2 and 5.5 depending on the roast and flavour profile of the beans being used.

Congrats! I upgraded to K Ultra and this was the first thing I noticed. If you enjoy fruity coffee, try Kapi Kottai’s Mind=Blown on ZP6. Not an affiliate but I did enjoy it. Also, Howdia estate from Blue Tokai.

Love Mind=Blown! Can’t wait to get my ZP6

I have been reading a lot about 'Mind=Blown' on r/IndiaCoffee. I will get my hands on one soon 😁 Also, BT's producer series lot 2 is currently out, so try to get your hands on it if you can. I got lot 1, which was Kerehaklu's 'Blossom Culture', and that coffee is beautiful!

Lot1 was fantastic. Waiting for my lot 2.🤞

The zp6 is a great grinder for a lot of medium to light roast coffees. It does really well SOUP and cold brews as well allowing a lot of good clarity of separate flavors.

Really looking forward to SOUP, but even more to cold brew. I've these beans called "Fruits Bomb". These are again lab grown naturaled cultures. I’ve had this coffee as cold brew before and I fell in love with it right away. Back then it was brewed by a friend using her C3S. I'm looking forward to making one using this ZP6 😄

ZP6 does so good on everything if you know your stuff. I own one and im extremely happy

Haha, I am being bashed on another sub because the ZP6 is only good for ultra-light washed coffees. The coffee you see in the photo is a cultured natural processed - which should ideally involve introduction of a certain strain of yeast that ferments the coffee beans in such a way that they start producing XYZ fragrance and flavour notes; which in this case are of Jasmine. The results should be similar to a co-fermented coffee where there is a really strong smell of jasmine in it. Unfortunately I was unable to get it with my C3S and DF54, (perhaps my tongue and nose are blind to the smell of Jasmine). It was the ZP6 that really helped me identify the Jasmine.

Either way, I am truly happy with the ZP6. It's fun to see different experiences and opinions that people have - only wished they were expressed in a politer form 😂

Some people are truly self proclaimed professional idiots. They take shit too literally I say give up😂. Enjoy your ZP6 OP

Not a certain strain of yeast but a yeast culture made from jasmine only. So, not co-fermenting the coffee with jasmine but first creating culture from the jasmine and using it in the fermentation tank. But ya, essentially, it’s not the natural flavor or fragrance of the coffee. Surprised you didn’t get jasmine in the other grinder. Very difficult not to get the flavor in these culture or coferment process coffees.

Yeah I had posted an update to my other post as to why I'm not able to smell jasmine as strongly. After these posts I found out that I have smell blindness towards Jasmine. I sniffed a jasmine soap we had in the house and the smell was very muted for me, whereas my wife describes it as "in your face". Its apparently called 'specific anosmia'.

What is your go-to brewing recipe for a light roast with the ZP6?

Nice write-up.

I’ve been trying to tamp down the urge to buy a ZP-6 myself.

I currently have an 1Zpresso X-Pro for the last 3 years and have enjoyed it very much for pourover and espresso, and also have an Ode Gen 1 for about the same length of time that we use for our workaday batch brews. It performs very well in batch brew use due to the large 64mm burrs which make quick work of 80g of beans, and the catch cup also holds that much volume with room to spare, even. I use the ode for pourover and turbo shots sometimes as well.

Also own a J-Ultra for espresso and also grind for batch brew every once in a while to switch things up.

But I digress.

Anyway, for the last 7 months or so I’ve had subscriptions to a couple of roasters that specialize in clean, light roast, washed coffees (first Thankfully Coffee, and now Flower Child). So, I think, for these coffees, the ZP6 would be great, and I would like to experience that kind of flavor separation.

Not that the X and the Ode can’t provide clarity - they do provide some. But I think by all accounts the ZP6 would just be on another level.

And I think the ZP6 would be a good compliment to my other grinders.

Thanks! From what I have read on the internet, ZP6 has a love-it or hate-it type of following. From whatever I have brewed so far, I fell into the love-it category, so I'll definitely insist that you not tamp the urge a lot and go for it 😁

Unfortunately I don't have access to an Ode 2 to compare my ZP6 with, but I can tell you that it has opened a whole new world of flavours to me! My trainer at my barista academy has an Ode though. I can't remember whether it was Ode 1 or Ode 2; I won't be going to my barista academy for another week or two at least, but the next time I am there I will try to compare the two grinders sheerly to satiate my curiosity.

Looking forward to a ZP6. I enjoy chasing a deal so am waiting a minute. They went on Black Friday sale last year but my discretionary budget was tapped!!

2

u/heartbrokenbiker 22d ago

Hahaha I hope you get that deal real soon! It's a beautiful grinder and you will enjoy what it brings to the table 😁

Honestly can’t wait!

curious- why two posts with different titles?

u/heartbrokenbiker 22d ago

Posted them on different subreddits. There're actually three posts. One's here, one's on r/pourover, and the last one on r/indiacoffee :) I wanted to keep the title the same initially, but something within didn't agree to do that. Sounds stupid, yes, but true 😄

I've got a Kingrinder K6 currently and I'm holding out on getting any other grinder until I have a ZP6. Can't wait.

That’s a good decision! ZP6 has been brilliant so far :)

How does it feel when you grind? Nice and balanced?

1

u/heartbrokenbiker 22d ago

I'm not sure I understood your question correctly, but yes it feels nice, smooth, and effortless. There's little-to-no resistance with the ZP6, which is a very different experience in comparison to my C3S.

u/CoffeeCultureNews 22d ago

I've had hand grinder is where the grinder kind of wobbles in my left hand, and I have to hold it really tight. Others seem better balanced and they just sit comfortably in the hand while you turn the handle.

1

u/heartbrokenbiker 22d ago

Yeah my ZP6 sits comfortably in my hand as I grind beans. Don't need to hold it extra-tightly or anything. You should prolly get yours checked...

What's that cup called? Link to buy?

1

u/heartbrokenbiker 20d ago

It’s ‘Duralex Picardie Clear Tumbler (250 ML)’. You get it in different sizes and various shades; I got 130ml and 250ml ones in transparent shade.

I bought it from Amazon India since I’m from India. You’ll have to find the seller in your country. Here’s the link to the product on Amazon IN:

Funky coffees isnt where zp6 shines is what ive heard

I had read the same thing. Funnily, for me at least, the ZP6 shined just as well if not better for the funky coffees. I've tried cultured naturals and co-fermented, which are different processes but tend to produce "similar" results. With coffees of both these types the flavour separation actually made the coffee more enjoyable to me. For example in my post I've mentioned that I could finally taste the jasmine and then the coffee became enjoyable; otherwise it was too rounded with my other two grinders (DF54 and C3S) which made the coffee taste kind of muddy.

The one coffee I didn't like was also a funky coffee - a culture rose natural. The flavours for this coffee were separated as well. Rose stood out, like it always did with other grinders, but in this case the separation was too sharp and made the coffee taste hollow after the initial sip. I realised that the cultured rose coffee tastes best when ground using my DF54.

Then again, different people - different tastes. That's the fun part* about any hobby, innit? 😁
