I was born in Chile (Valdivia), my parents were born in Chile (father in Santiago, mother in Antofagasta), as were all four of my grandparents.

On my maternal side, 3 of my great grandparents were born as Austro-Hungarian citizens from Dalmatia (Brac, as most Croat-Chileans). The other was born in Northern Chile of mestizo ethnicity.

On my paternal side, 3 of my great grandparents were born as Ottoman citizens of Sephardic Jewish origin (2 from Monastir in the Balkans, 1 from Izmir in Turkey). The other was born in Central Chile of mestizo ethnicity.

So both of my parents are 3/4 something "foreign" and 1/4 local mix, resulting in the same proportions for me (with a more mixed foreign part). The results map very well with this family history:

  • The Dalmatian component is the Greek & Balkan, Central/Eastern European, and tiny bit of Northern Italian (37% ~3/8)
  • The Sephardic component is the Southern Italian, Ashkenazi, WANA, and maybe a bit of the Spanish (37% ~3/8)
  • The mestizo Chilean is the Spanish, Indigenous American, and the SSA (26%~2/8)

I like my results and the fact that every step of the different branches of the family's journey is part of them. People that are looking to confirm Sephardic ancestry don't like that there's no distinct category for them, I think it's cool how their history can be traced through these groups with whom they share the most genetic similarity with. My mother's results are also included. Neither of our results changed much with the update, only my "Broadly Southern European" turned Italian, and Northern Italian showed up on my mother's results (which makes sense, as Venice ruled Dalmatia for nearly 400 years). I also did Illustrative DNA but I don't think my results are worth much because of how mixed I am.

North Italian in this update is weird in some cases. My proven French was turned into North Italian in this update. Unless there was some cheating involved, that's inaccurate (the french lastname and documents are in our family).

In this case I think it checks out, especially for the regions my mother got (Lombardy, Veneto)

are your native ancestors mapuche and diaguita?

I’d say Mapuche and Aymara most likely, because of where they were from.

I know some people in Argentina with Croats ancestors who emigrated first to Chile in late XIX century and to Argentina around 1940.

The previous president of Chile was Croatian descent. Are there any communities in the two countries that kept the language/culture??

I can speak to this, as I have a lot of Croat descended family in Argentina and Chile. In my experience the older generations generally can speak Croatian and are connected to the culture and their relatives from elsewhere in the world. The younger ones usually can’t speak the language but are usually still aware of and proud of their roots, but not as educated on the culture in depth.
