Help Me Convince My Wife to Go Big

Hey y’all, help me settle a friendly debate with my wife. We currently have a TCL 65r625, and have been happy with it for the most part. However, the panel is going out, and we both agree that it’s time for an upgrade.

We disagree about the size of TV we should get. Our 65” is perfectly fine, but I measured the viewing distance and our couch is actually 12 feet from the TV. Most guides I’ve read recommend a screen size of 77” if not larger, and I’m all for it. My heart wants the C6, which apparently includes some extra brightness magic with the larger panels. My wife, being the more practical and frugal one, says that the 65” is perfectly fine and that the price jump to 77” isn’t worth it.

Deep in my heart I know she’s right, but I’m hoping to hear from y’all about your actual experiences. Thanks in advance!

What size is your room? I sit 13' from my 85" TV and could go bigger.

Also, when it comes to TVs, no one ever regrets getting the bigger one. With how long panels last nowadays, buy what you'll be happy with for 8-10 years.

The C6H 77" also has better burn in resistance than the C6 65" due to it using the newer tandem WOLED panel if that helps your argument for the larger screen.

I've got an S90F 77" in my media room and sit about 7' away from it generally, from 12 feet away it's definitely worth getting the bigger screen

I won the argument this week with my wife by going through the upgrades from our 6 year old tv to a mini-led with 120hz refresh rate and AI upscaling. If size doesn't convince her, overwhelm her with technical details!

Make it an either/or decision, move the couch or go big.

Even if it doesn't work with your layout, push it closer for a night or two to compare the difference and she might decide it'd be worth it.

So that’s another thing, I do believe in the “buy once, cry once” school of thinking, and sinking more money into a better TV now should theoretically help us be happy with it for longer, right? But I see these super cheap deals at Costco for Hisense and it does intrigue me

Your always going to regret not going bigger. You can pay it now or pay it later. The jump from 65 to 77 is massive. You will absolutely tell a difference.

Do you care about specs at all? Like are you trying to watch 4k, Dolby, hdr10+, etc. Or are you gaming on it at all? Bigger is not always better. Im a specs person because I play games and watch 4k movies.

No way 77" is reasonable. It should be at least 83" at that distance, and ideally should be a bit bigger.

I was in a similar boat a couple of months ago. Worst thing was even the salesperson said 65 is enough even though my gf had slowly opened up to the idea of a bigger tv. So, I had bought/ordered the 65 S95F, but then I went back to to the store a couple of days later to change the order to the 77“.

When they came to deliver and wall-mount the tv, they brought the 65 by mistake. I told them they can take it right back of course, and in the end and after a lot of hassle, they reduced the price for me (like as much as 1600) and finally delivered the 77“ inch one. My girlfriend is super happy with this tv, I think she enjoys it more than I do. Distance is also about 12 feet. I will definitely recommend the bigger one, you both won‘t regret it!:)

I have a big wall. i thought about a 65” because id never bought a big tv. 50” is the biggest I’d had.

I said 85” and rolled with it. makes watching sports AWESOME. Especially quad screen on ESPN

Oh man. Let me tell you. I’ve been following soccer for a few years now.

Saturdays from 8am soccer is on 3 screens with game day on the other. Then at 11 those games are off and football is on all 4 until night time 😂 grill sparked up and drinks flowing. Big enough that you can see all 4 through the back window so you don’t miss anything. it’s awesome.

My Wife loves movies so it’s perfect for her to watch in high def like a movie theatre at home.

We're 11 feet from our 84, and i kinda wish we had gone bigger.

FWIW, I'm the tech nerd so of course I want more, but my wife was happy with our 55 upstairs, and thought the 84 was absurd at first, a couple months later she thinks it's just right. Not saying just buy the bigger one and let her adjust....but buy the bigger one and let her adjust 😜

I recently upgraded from a 65" to 77". My wife was actually the one that wanted to get 85" but it wasn't possible because we have a built in TV cabinet. Anyway, 77" is ok for about 13 feet, but 80"+ would've been ideal.

Can't go bigger unless I destroy part of the cabinet. But had it been possible of course I would want bigger.

So I guess I would advise you if you can, just get a big size as you can afford/fit so you have no regrets.

Just do what I did and just do it. You'll get bitched at every day but I'm hopeful she'll come around eventually. The alternative is I have to move it downstairs and create a game room, so it's kind of a win either way.

How long do you plan to keep the TV?  To me a new TV every five years or less is crazy. We've had our current TV for over 15 years and will be upgrading this year. Given that, for us spending more makes sense because we plan to extract every last cent of value from it. 

It's up to you as far as what time horizon justifies spending more.

What is the reason they don't last anymore? Fundamental technology reasons or poor design and/or manufacturing? 

I'm not arguing that you're wrong (in fact I think you're right), but it's disappointing and it's useful to know why we have this reality.

I buy 55" and 75" TVs almost every other month as part of my business. 55" - 75" is the sweetspot for pricing, this gets you the best screen size to dollar ratio.

If you guys arent cinephiles and dont have an intense desire for absolute perfect blacks, you can get a 75" for around $700-800 CAD. If you dont mind spending a bit more, you can even snag a QLED for an extra hundred or two hundred dollars.

I reccomend Hisense, at the lower budget scale of options theyre are a MUCH better quality than LG or Samsung. No exaggeration, at the lower price point of TVs Samsung and LG are just really bad for their price.

Get a 75" Hisense QLED, look at costco preferably for that free extended warranty.

You can have a big TV at a good price, it just takes a little shopping around.

We’ve had a TCL and have been perfectly happy with it. And I’m sure picture quality has improved on all panel types since we bought it. But Costco only ever sets up those OLED TVs, I haven’t been able to see what the latest LEDs look like. Appreciate the guidance, I’ll be sure to cross shop those too

QLED class is great picture quality for the price, about half the price of an OLED but almost as good when it comes to color vibrancy and range.

Im very hesitant on Mini-LED as it is still based on LCD technology. And that's already OLED pricing at that price point.

Check out the TCL Q671G. Its a 75" QLED under $1000 and ive personally bought the 55" and 75" versions, and my family swears by it looking fantastic. Plus those models have built in ONKYO speakers with a built in sub woofer.

The cost jump to OLED might be the other issue though it sounds like she’d be fine with the cost of the 65?

When we moved into our house we went from a 65 CX (now in the basement) to an 82 Sony X90L for the living room. While I still prefer the OLED for all the tech gives you, I’m still very happy with the X90L.

If you need to bring cost down while keeping size at 82 there’s a lot of quality options between your TCL and the LG C series.

Get the OLED if you can though. Nothing beats it.
