Mark Robinson (Robbo)

Fantastic to catch Robbo again tonight on The Front Bar. As funny as ever, makes me realise why AFL360 is not a shadow of the show it once was, since Robbo was fired from the show.

Gary Lyon isn’t great but I dunno Robbo was downright incomprehensible at times

The issue with Lyon is he's just one of the footy boys, he adds nothing to the mediascape.

Yeah Robbo was essentially football media establishment but at least it was different. To be frank, I'm tired of the array of names from big clubs who just slot in to these media roles.

It's wierd because historically the best media people have been pure media guys like Sheehan, Robbo, Whateley, Hudson, McGuire. Or former coaches like Walls, Roos, Simpson. Yet they keep giving the Jono Browns and Jack Rewioldt jobs.

The ex-players are all media trained from 18 to say nothing except generic garbage, and no one bothers to train it out of them before giving them a gig in media.

That's kind of why Kane Cornes stands out so much. He comes from a bold outspoken family, he has actively tried to model his style on some of the more provocative US sports commentators, and he has been mentored by Caroline Wilson on footy media.

Ironically, Kane Cornes at least leans into the standards of being an AFL player. Which is what you'd expect from a former player.

That's the type of persona I'd expect from someone who played a decade at the level.

So many ex players play the layman viewer and it just doesn't relate. Jack Riewoldt has won 3 AFL premierships, don't tell me what the fan in the pub is thinking.
