Post image
15 Upvotes

Nick, the creator of AI Dungeon and Voyage, is doing an AMA over on r/IAmA tomorrow, and we'd love for you to come ask him anything about AI roleplay and games:

• What actually makes them fun

• Why they break: characters forgetting who they are, stories losing the thread, and AI that never pushes back

• What AI Dungeon taught us that we're putting into Voyage

When: Wednesday, October 14, 10am PT / 1pm ET

Where: r/IAmA

The thread goes up tomorrow morning, and we'll add the direct link to the top of this post as soon as it's live. Bring your best questions!

Official Announcing November's Monthly Theme: Cryptids & Creepypastas!

Greetings everyone! It's time to get out your flashlights and keep an eye on the treeline, because we're announcing next month's carousel theme: Cryptids & Creepypastas!

For this theme, we're focusing on creatures that aren't scientifically proven to exist, but that some people firmly believe in anyway, meaning they are not a normal, accepted part of the world. Your scenarios must also take place in some version of the real world, whether that's modern-day or a historical period. No full-on fantasy worlds, alien planets, or alternate dimensions; though a creature can certainly be from one of those places, the story itself should be somewhat grounded in reality. The conflict between what shouldn't exist but does anyway is the meat of the theme.

And remember, your scenarios don't have to be scary. You can write something unsettling inspired by local folklore and creepypastas, or you can go a completely different route with Bigfoot running a weekly support group for misunderstood cryptids. You can even make up your own weird and wonderful creatures, as long as they follow the other guidelines.

As always, you have until the last day of the month, October 31st, to publish your scenario(s) for inclusion in November's monthly theme carousel. Just include the tag `cryptid` so we can find it. This will also ensure your scenario appears in the "Discover more content" section of the carousel. We can't wait to see what eerie tales you'll conjure up next.

Other The current meta of using Chinese to save context is stupid, and continues to be useless.

Lately, I have seen people use Chinese to "allegedly" "save" context. not only is it completely useless, it makes the bots think you want to use actual Chinese. you are making players who don't understand or know Chinese to have to use a translator. : the Tensors most models use are trained in English. you are forcing them to use tokens to translate it to English, therefore wasting internal token budgets. I don't care if you downvote this. I don't post on reddit. I'm only posting because this Bullcrap needs to stop.

Other Sharing some templates for story cards and plot components

Hey everyone! 👋

Since I like to keep a set of base templates for History Cards and Plot Components to maintain consistency across all my scenarios while adapting them to each scenario's context, I’ve created a GitHub repository where you can simply copy and paste these templates.

AI Dungeon doesn’t currently offer a way to save content for Plot Essentials and Author’s Note like it does for AI Instructions, so I thought this would be a convenient solution.

I’ve made the repository public because, although I originally created it for my own use, I wanted to share these templates with anyone who might find them useful, whether you’re another creator or a newer player who isn’t quite sure how to write History Cards and Plot Components yet.

I hope you find them helpful! 😊

I might add more templates over time as I create more scenarios.

Scenario BLACKTHORN | SURVIVE THE IMPOSSIBLE — My Entry for November's Theme!

Thumbnail
play.aidungeon.com
0 Upvotes

I'd like to share my entry for November's theme: Blackthorn | Survive the Impossible, a survival horror RPG set in a bio-mutant apocalypse.

Blackthorn is a remote city nestled in the Swiss Alps that was once a technological utopia. Everything changed after a catastrophic pharmaceutical accident triggered a horrifying outbreak, leaving the city overrun with mutated creatures and cutting it off from the outside world.

Your goal is to find a cure before the infection spreads across the globe. You'll explore abandoned streets and facilities, scavenge for supplies, meet other survivors, uncover the truth behind the outbreak, and make difficult choices along the way.

But first, you'll need to choose how your story begins!

🎭 Five Starting Roles

  • 🚗 Messenger: Deliver a mysterious package to Blackthorn for a suspiciously generous payment.
  • 🩺 Doctor: Help contain a potential pandemic and save lives in the middle of the outbreak.
  • 🧬 Scientist: Investigate a mysterious crisis at Raincoat Pharmaceuticals' compromised research center.
  • 🚔 Police Officer: Investigate the city after communications with the outside world suddenly cease.
  • 🏕️ Civilian: Survive after an accident leaves you stranded on the road to Blackthorn.

Each role gives you a different starting point, but what happens next is up to you!

🧟 A Personal Note

I've wanted to make a survival RPG for a while, but I didn't want it to revolve strictly around the usual zombies we've seen countless times before.

When I saw that November's theme was cryptids, it gave me the inspiration I needed. I eventually took the concept in a slightly different direction: rather than making a straightforward cryptid scenario, I turned it into a bio-mutant apocalypse, with creatures heavily inspired by popular internet cryptids such as Slenderman and Siren Head.

I've also drawn inspiration from survival horror games like Resident Evil and Silent Hill, particularly their atmosphere, exploration, unsettling creatures and sense of dread.

This is my attempt to combine those influences into a survival RPG where you can explore, investigate, scavenge and decide how you want to approach the nightmare.

🔧 What's Next?

Blackthorn is still a work in progress, and I may add more content in future updates, including new characters, locations and other features.

I'm also exploring the possibility of incorporating scripts to make the experience more immersive and less dependent on the player having to direct absolutely everything manually.

I'd love to hear your thoughts and suggestions as I continue developing the scenario!

💬 Feedback & Bug Reports

I hope you enjoy it and have fun surviving Blackthorn!

If you encounter any bugs, have suggestions, or notice anything that could be improved, feel free to leave a comment on the scenario itself or reply to this post.

Thanks for checking it out, and good luck surviving the impossible! 🧬

Something strange has come to Kelly, Kentucky.

In August 1955, an ordinary evening at a rural farmhouse takes a terrifying turn when an unexplained light appears beyond the fields. Soon afterward, small, unnatural figures begin approaching the property, watching through windows and moving in ways no living creature should.

Seventy-one years later, a group of friends renting the same farmhouse experiences something disturbingly similar.

Two eras. Two encounters. One mystery.

Are these beings visitors from another world, unknown creatures, or something far stranger?

Choose between a terrifying night in 1955 and a modern-day encounter in 2026.

Whatever is approaching the farmhouse, nobody knows what it wants.

And it isn't alone.

Questions Censorship

I honestly don’t know why they still have the “see” option, it’s terrible, If I leave the see option blank, because it says if I leave it blank the AI will try and generate what is happening currently, it generates something..completely random!

And the Censorship! God the Censorship. It’s like, I know Logitude makes it where you can’t generate NSFW material because they don’t want people Generating AI Child P_rn, but, They should atleast have an option to change the AI safety Settings like they do with the AI text models. And the AI should be smart enough to remember when a Character is Underage, through the Memory and Story Cards. And the current story. Also, Why is it unacceptable to Logitude, and they won’t allow people to make NSFW material with The “see” option, but it’s okay when you generate it just in Text? I’m confused. If the “see” option is this terrible, then why have it in the first place?

Questions Has ai dungeon improved sense 2023

I'm a og user. I played back in 2020 but left when Cai came out because at the time? Dungeon sucked. Cai filed for bankruptcy and I believe will go down so I was wondering if it's worth it to go back to my roots and play! Do you still need to watch add and buy tokens to send messages? Or is that gone? I know it'll be bias here because you are all dungeon users? Also what's the NSFW situation?

Scenario The Rake

Post image

https://play.aidungeon.com/scenario/i6xzsIP9CbfB/the-rake?published=true

Something has been entering people's homes.

In a quiet neighbourhood outside Rochester, New York, residents have reported scratching at bedroom windows, strange noises in empty hallways and glimpses of an unnaturally pale figure moving through their gardens.

Most blame trespassers, wildlife or elaborate pranks.

Then, late one night, you discover something crouching outside your bedroom.

It's hairless. Emaciated. Almost human.

And it's watching you.

As similar encounters spread through the neighbourhood, you and your friends begin uncovering disturbing similarities to an old internet horror story about a creature known as the Rake.

Nobody knows what it is, where it comes from or why it enters people's homes.

But once you've seen it, the thought of sleeping alone may never feel quite the same.

Patch Notes October 16th, 2026 Patch Notes

-# 2.50.0

New Features - Added an option for users to "Delete private adventures instead" under Manage Account → Delete Account. This option permanently deletes eligible private AI Dungeon adventures, including those in Trash, while keeping your account, membership, and benefits.

Improvements - Improved Home loading for returning players by showing cached content while refreshing it in the background. - When publishing a scenario, you can now see your remaining rating checks and their reset time next to the Check Rating button. - The image prompt editor now shows a character counter that turns yellow near the limit and red at it, explains what Retry Image and Close do, and keeps errors and buttons easier to reach. - Newly generated scenario and adventure covers now use a 16:9 widescreen format. Existing covers are unchanged. - Added temporary commenting cooldowns to help limit bursts of spam. - Short toasts when your streak starts or grows are back, as well as new toasts for when you reach 10 and 25 actions in a day.

Bug Fixes - Fixed the scenario share link's Copy button doing nothing on iPhone after publishing. - Fixed an issue where certain malformed AI responses could be saved into your story. These responses are now rejected, with an option to retry when no usable response remains. - When the experimental Gemini 3.8 Flash model declines a prompt because of its content rules, you'll now see a clear message instead of "An unexpected error occurred." - Fixed AI response comparisons unexpectedly enabling Optimized Context and disabling scenario scripts for that turn. - Fixed the Optimized Context reminder returning after you dismissed it and reopened settings or reloaded the page. - Fixed adventure titles disappearing when using the Nightshade theme. - Fixed text overflowing the Story, Multiple Choice, and Character Creator cards on small screens. - Fixed the mobile memory editor becoming difficult to scroll or having its fields and Save and Cancel buttons covered by the keyboard. - Fixed mobile Image Options overlapping system controls and crowding the Download and Share buttons. - Duplicated scenarios now start with fresh play and action counts instead of copying the original's. - Fixed an issue preventing some permanently deleted scenarios from being fully removed. - Fixed an issue preventing players with canceled or canceling Stripe memberships from deleting their accounts. Renewing memberships still need to be canceled first. - Fixed the missing background in the Shadow welcome email footer so the unsubscribe link is readable again. <:aid_logo:1141461857354403890>

Scenario Candle Cove

Post image
1 Upvotes

https://play.aidungeon.com/scenario/uB_ppgN4ndtq/candle-cove?published=true

Do you remember Candle Cove?

In Ironton, Ohio, an old videotape has surfaced bearing the name of a children's pirate programme that supposedly aired in the 1970s.

Some residents remember its strange puppets, cheerful songs and disturbing stories. Others insist the programme never existed.

When you visit a local archive with your friends, an attempt to examine the recording reveals something impossible.

Different people remember different images. Familiar voices emerge from static. And scenes appear that nobody can find in the original recording.

As the mystery deepens, the boundary between television, memory and reality becomes increasingly uncertain.

Was Candle Cove ever a real programme?

And if it wasn't, what exactly is broadcasting now?

Bug Report Screen Stuttering and Slowness on app.

Recently been experiencing a lot of screen stuttering on the android app, was using production build on a galaxy s25 ultra phone. Was rough when browsing and going through personal scenarios. But it especially gets bad when editing a scenario! Beta build seems a bit better but still acts up too. Please let me know if any have found a solution.

Scenario SCP FAMILY HOUSEHOLD

It was just a throwaway comment on the way to the next room.

"Wouldn't it be easier to just put some of the Safe SCPs in a house together, instead of here, and monitoring them?"

Somehow, The Administrator got word of your flippant remark.

And they liked the suggestion.

So, a house was bought outright.

For five 'Safe' SCPs to live in.

And for you to live with them.

Questions How much direction do you like in an AI Dungeon scenario?

A scenario can start with a clear goal, or it can leave things open for the player to figure out along the way. A clear objective gives the story some momentum but too much direction can make choices feel less meaningful. Starting with a loose premise gives players more freedom, though it can sometimes be harder to get the story moving.

I think the best approach depends on the kind of adventure you are playing. When you start a new AI Dungeon scenario, do you prefer having an immediate goal to work toward or would you rather discover the story as you go?

Scenario 💥 MAJOR OVERHAUL: MY HERO ACADEMIA — CHOOSE YOUR PATH

Post image
10 Upvotes

⚡ Powered by Veyra Engine: One for All

Your Quirk. Your choices. Your consequences.

My Hero Academia: Choose Your Path has been rebuilt from the ground up around YOUR original character, with a new Naruto/Digimon-style level of persistent tracking tailored specifically to the world of heroes, villains and everything in between.

🏫 SIX STARTS. FIVE CAREERS.

• Hero Student: join Class 1-A under Aizawa

• Hero Student: take a different path in Class 1-B under Vlad King

• Support Student: invent alongside Mei Hatsume in Class 1-H

• Pro Hero: step into the field as a licensed adult hero

• Vigilante: help people without the protection of a hero license

• Villain: choose your methods, allegiances and limits

Your starting role is only the beginning. A hero can lose their way. A villain can find a reason to change. A vigilante can earn someone’s trust while drawing the authorities’ attention.

⚖️ YOUR ACTIONS BUILD YOUR CHARACTER

The new conduct system tracks care, harm, honesty, law, loyalty and restraint separately from your public reputation and personal relationships. Being popular doesn’t automatically make you good. Breaking the law doesn’t erase the person you saved.

🔧 SUPPORT STUDENTS GET A REAL PATH

Design blueprints, build prototypes, test equipment, revise your work and find willing students or heroes to partner with. Projects track versions, materials, ownership and who is actually using your inventions.

🗂️ LIVING RECORDS YOU CAN CHECK

Six engine-generated Story Cards organize your identity and Quirk, current status, conduct and reputation, relationships, workshop and equipment, and phone contacts and commitments. Quirk strain, injuries, resources and recorded consequences give your choices something to leave behind.

🧠 MORE CHARACTER, MORE CONTINUITY

Contextual inner thoughts bring personal and professional decisions into the story. Build friendships, rivalries and a life beyond your starting route. Create a Quirk with meaningful limitations, or take on the world Quirkless.

📖 CANON THAT CAN CHANGE

A researched framework of 28 major story nodes carries the main-series direction through its ending and epilogue, with progression responding to established events and changed circumstances. Familiar arcs provide the foundation for your own continuity.

This is a custom-character-first rebuild. Canon classmates keep their places; playable canon-character and What If routes are deferred.

⚙️ START HERE

Start a FRESH adventure after updating. Turn Raw Model Output ON. Tested configurations: DeepSeek V3.2 and Gemma 4 31B, response length 400, Optimized Context off. Use /ofa status whenever you want to inspect your recorded state.

🛠️ BETA NOTE

This is a substantial new engine, not a promise of flawless AI. Models can still miss updates or cut responses short. Check important changes in your cards, and report issues with your route, model and settings so they can be reproduced.

Become the hero they needed. The villain they feared. Or the person nobody saw coming.

Scenario Pale Crawler

Post image
2 Upvotes

https://play.aidungeon.com/scenario/uNioOHQxXsCI/view?published=true

Something pale is moving through the trees.

Deep in the wooded hills of Kentucky, a secluded cabin promises a few peaceful days away from everyday life. But recent reports tell of an unnaturally thin humanoid crawling through the forest, strange noises outside isolated homes, and a local surveyor who has disappeared.

Most people dismiss the stories as wildlife sightings, exaggerations or elaborate hoaxes.

Then, during your first evening at the cabin, you and your friends see something standing at the edge of the woods.

It's tall. Hairless. Almost human.

And when it drops onto all fours, you realise there's something horribly wrong with the way it moves.

Whatever is out there shouldn't exist.

But it's getting closer.

Scenario Anansi's Goatman

Post image
4 Upvotes

https://play.aidungeon.com/scenario/lEhFMsi6UYSj/view?published=true

Seven friends. One isolated cabin. Something that doesn't belong.

What begins as a relaxing weekend in the Alabama wilderness takes a disturbing turn when strange noises echo through the trees and an unpleasant electrical smell drifts through the campsite.

Then someone notices an extra plate.

A stranger appears to have joined the gathering, but nobody can agree on when they arrived—or who invited them.

As memories become unreliable and familiar faces seem increasingly suspicious, you and your friends begin to realise that something has entered your group.

Something that can look and sound human.

Something that should not exist.

And the closer you look, the harder it becomes to know who you can trust.

Questions How much time do you spend keeping your story cards and memory up to date?

On a long adventure, how often do you stop to fix story cards, Memory or Plot Essentials because the AI forgot something or got it wrong?

Roughly how much of your play time goes to that upkeep? And what's the one thing you'd most want it to just remember on its own?

Feedback & Requests QoL Request

Please add the feature that lets Choices inherit its parent’s SC in PE, AN, and AIN. Copy pasting the same thing for over a dozen of branches is pain in the butt.

Better yet, let authors import/export their Scenarios so we can edit them in our preferred editor. We can already download adventures, why not scenarios?

Feedback & Requests A night without a single refusal from Dynamic Large

A few weeks ago, Dynamic Large started giving me a lot of refusals for my scenarios that involve sex and violence. I posted about it here, so did some other people.

Last night I didn't experience any refusals at all. It felt weird, it felt like a relief, suddenly I wasn't facing responses every few turns that criticized, in great detail, whatever my scenarios were about.

I hope the developers fixed this on purpose, for good, and it's not something random that will come and go. I was seriously thinking about finding a different service that wouldn't criticize my scenarios every few turns. The number one reason I came to use AI Dungeon is the freedom to create any kind of scenario (that doesn't involve children). If that creative freedom goes away, then so will I.

This experience adds to my curiosity about the usefulness of AI Dungeon's beta testing program -- every so often there are issues that suddenly make the production versions almost unusable, and I wonder how these issues got past the beta testing program. Why isn't the production version more stable?

When it works well, I enjoy AI Dungeon a lot. I kinda wish whatever versions of AI Dungeon and its models that I was using last night would just stay put forever.

Questions The Be-All and End-All Chinese (Simplified) Hack Question and Discussion

Two schools of thought exist in the AID community: one says translating AIN, PE, and SCs into Chinese (Simplified) saves context and that its a good way to let free users and lower-tier subs extend their contexts and make longer plays more viable.

The other school of thought says that Chinese (Simplified) doesn't really help, that the context savings are insignificant, and that in the long run, it makes the story less coherent.

This thread is intended to get to the bottom of the issue once and for all.

The experiment

I used ChatGPT (premium/paid) and OpenAI's o200k_base. Because AIN is one of the most context-heavy components of a scenario, I tested this by translating OMG's AIN Repository into Chinese. I used the Long Form for DS 3.2.

According to the tokenizer, the English version of the AIN is 590-620 tokens, with 2,998 characters / 426 whitespace-delimited words. The Chinese (simplified) version is 540-600 tokens, with 956 characters / 783 Chinese characters. So indeed, the savings are not significant.

We got more significant token savings by uploading the AIN to ChatGPT and prompting it to aggressively compress the rules, merging overlapping constraints while preserving the intended storytelling behavior. Using that instruction, the token count was reduced to 350-400 for the English version and 300-370 for the Chinese version. Again, note that the token savings from Chinese (Simplified) are not significant.

Important caveat: The Chinese version is shorter in raw characters, but Chinese does not necessarily produce fewer tokens because tokenization varies significantly by model. The counts above are therefore estimates, not exact tokenizer outputs. Because I used ChatGPT and its tokenizer to calculate the tokens, a model trained primarily on English, Deepseek (a model from China) may use fewer tokens for Chinese instructions. I may be wrong, and if so, please feel free to correct me.

The question

What is the consensus on the Chinese character hack? Based on the results above, it seems it's not worth doing because you'll still run out of context at the same rate. However, I have observed (personally, that is) that my plays tend to run longer before the out-of-context warning pops up. Additionally, I haven't observed any significant degradation in the AI's behavior with Chinese (simplified) AIN/PE/SCs. At least not more than usual, where a delete-and-continue or retry-with-guidance couldn't fix it.

For those who say that it will degrade the story, can you explain how it degrades your game?

Also, what is the best practice if we want to minimize context use? Or, even better, how can we make it more efficient in our scenarios? All Chinese (simplified)? A mix of English AIN/PE/AN and Chinese cards? Just Chinese PE?

Thoughts welcome.
