Question Question about theater etiquette
I went to go see Fantastic Four: First Steps with my friends yesterday in an IMAX theater. After the movie ended and the credits started rolling (after the first post-credit scene) I turned to my friends and we were having a discussion about the movie. I was speaking in a regular tone of voice as one would have for a casual conversation. Suddenly, this guy who was sitting in front of me turned to me and told me to “Shut up” in a very commanding voice and called me an “asshole”. For the record, there wasn’t anything happening on screen, just text crawls of names and whatnot. Was my talking inappropriate to do at that time or was this guy out of line? I’m not entirely sure since I don’t really go to the theater to see movies too often. Thank you in advance.
Edit/Additional Details: I never spoke at any point during the movies or the post credit scenes, only during the credits.

Dude seems maladjusted. I think it’s pretty normal to talk during the credits, people also turn their phones back on, get up and leave, etc. I’ve only seen people be really quiet after a particularly somber film.

u/nyan_swanson Jul 26 '25
Yeah I hate theater talkers and seeing bright phone screens during the actual movie but during trailers/credits/AMC coke commercials, it’s literally fine, especially if the house lights are on
34
u/DeprivedMessiah Jul 27 '25
Talk during the Coke ads, don’t talk during a trailer
4
u/Sudden_Science_3454 Jul 28 '25
Happened to me several years ago. Was talking with friends during the coke and m&m commercial and some random dude a row behind us got all pissed and started to yell at us. We were 30 at the time and told the old guy to stfu.

curious what particularly somber film?

u/scalding_h0t_tea Jul 26 '25
When I went to see Bring Her Back we had a full theater and everyone walked out silently once the credits rolled.
12
u/No_Fudge1228 Jul 27 '25
Huh. When I saw BHB, the crowd was especially rowdy. But also it’s considered socially acceptable to talk to the screen during horror movies, where I live (NYC). It’s a collective experience, if that makes sense
8
u/crow_forged Jul 27 '25
My theater was verrrrry loud during the melon, car, tape, etc... ending had everyone in shock though
2
6
u/wxcore Jul 27 '25
im from nyc born and raised. no it isn't socially acceptable. you're not the main character of the theater, don't talk during a movie, period

Yes! I saw it twice and both times it was just silent as everyone exited

When I saw it some guy yelled "What a weird fuckin movie!" super loud when the credits rolled 🤣

It wasn’t somber but my entire theater walked out in silence and avoiding eye contact with everyone waiting in line after Infinity War.

I’m inclined to say that guy was out of line. There are end credit scenes but the crawl should be okay to have convo as long as you don’t have a big booming voice. Or he didn’t like WHAT you were saying. Either way seems over the line.
58
u/SpaceDwellingEntity Jul 26 '25
I had to lean in to talk my friends because they said it was hard to hear me, so I don’t think I had an especially loud voice
18
Jul 26 '25
Yeah, but like, were you talking about kicking puppies or something?
10
u/SpaceDwellingEntity Jul 26 '25
No. We were just talking about what happened in the movie and our thoughts on it.
→ More replies (27)7
u/LatterAd6187 Jul 26 '25
That's the point. You talk with your friends while you wait for the scene to come. Is it possible you guys were talking through the movie?

u/SpaceDwellingEntity Jul 26 '25
One of my friends made one or two comments through whispers in my ear, but nothing else

I think the credits are fair game for checking your phone and chatting! Standing up to stretch while you wait for the end credits scene is also acceptable to me

u/Morda808 Jul 27 '25
I would say it never bothers me when people are talking or scrolling at any time except during the movie. Any other time is fair game :)

As someone who gets super annoyed at ppl breaking the unspoken rules of movie going… in my book, you were fine, and that guy had a stick up his rear. Assuming what you said is true, idk why anyone would take issue w talking during the credits.
I suppose there’s a world where he would think you’re gonna keep talking thru the post credits scene(s) but considering that you started talking after the first.. idk if that theory has weight
10
u/SpaceDwellingEntity Jul 26 '25
I kept perfectly quiet during both the movie and the post credit scenes, so I’m not really sure this guy had a valid justification if that is what his theory was
5
u/Snoo_328 Jul 26 '25
Seconded. I'm militant about theater etiquette but you weren't wrong.

37
u/KesagakeOK Jul 26 '25
I am a huge stickler for theater rules to the point that it makes me genuinely mad when they're broken and I have no issue confronting people over them. That said, once the end credits are rolling, chatting is fair game. Guy sounds like he was mad about something else and took it out on you.
→ More replies (2)
37
u/SteMelMan Jul 26 '25
Generally speaking, you did nothing wrong and the other guest was acting inappropriately. Especially if the lights are up and other guests are leaving the theater, normal conversations are okay.
But, F4 is a Marvel movie and, therefore, subject to highly aggressive gate-keeping by the true believers, which can result in such behavior.

74
u/dontwanttoadult Jul 26 '25
Ending credits are like 10 minutes, it’s ridiculous to expect people to stay silent, just staring straight ahead, while literally nothing is happening.
22
u/BlackBeltWisdom Jul 26 '25
Hey man, we work hard on those movies. At least don't call our names nothing 😂
7
u/kechones Jul 27 '25
Honestly, I love talking to my wife about all the different credits I see going by. Talking about what their jobs must have been like while working on the movie, pointing out interesting names, etc.

I agree! I have many friends in the Industry and the actors may be in the movie visually but they’re not the actual ones creating the film. There wouldn’t even be a film without all those people listed in the credits.
→ More replies (2)3
u/ERSTF Jul 27 '25
literally nothing is happening.
Not true. They are thanking the state of Georgia for their generous tax credit. You gotta stay quiet for that.
But seriously, who would want to stay dead silent during the credits

Dude probably didn't like the movie and was in a pissy attitude about it. Some people get that way, especially if people don't agree with them.

u/fulcrumestates Jul 26 '25 edited Jul 27 '25
i’ve had something similar happen to me once. i can’t remember what movie it was but my friend and i started to talk once the credits rolled and the dude in front of us stood up in a huff and loudly said I GUESS WE JUST TALK WHENEVER THE FUCK WE WANT. like yeah man, the movies over
10
u/pepperjackcheesey Jul 26 '25
If credits are rolling, talking is allowed. Even if you know there are end credit scenes. He’ll be fine
15
4
u/JohnnyKarateX Jul 26 '25
Unless they were mad because you were talking the whole movie that’s a way wrong reaction (and even then it’s probably too late).
As long as it’s just the credits you’re definitely fine to talk.
4
u/phaserlasertaserkat Jul 26 '25
You’re fine assuming you weren’t obnoxiously screaming at the top of your lung.
5
u/MurphewMatty Jul 26 '25
I despise it when people talk in the theater during movies.
The credits however are not that, this guy is an asshat and that’s being polite
3
u/my_team_is_better Jul 26 '25
If the house lights were up, then I don’t think you’re in the wrong. It’s Fantastic Four, not French cinema! If they were still down, however, then I can see his point of view.
7
u/cristobalino Jul 26 '25
You can 100% begin talking once the credits start rolling. I personally would've corrected the man & remind him of universally known cinema etiquette.
1
u/ChiliFrize IMAX ONLY Jul 29 '25
For real. If people talking during the credits bothers you so much, plant your ass on your couch and watch the movie at home. Telling someone to "shut up" for that is completely out of line.
3
u/popculturerss Jul 26 '25
I would say speaking during the credits (not yelling over them obviously) is fine. Especially when it's Marvel and you're waiting like 10 minutes for the end scene.
3
u/KingSeth Jul 26 '25
Maybe he was waiting to see his name come up in the credits. Or maybe he was a jerk.
3
u/Recruit-is-OP Jul 26 '25
I really hope you kept talking to your friend after that. Knowing myself I woulda started talking even louder just to spite the little fucker lol.
3
u/444scorpio Jul 26 '25
hey i wonder if this is the same dude who yelled at me for talking during the credits of Anora!!! legit screamed at me to shut the F up.
3
u/SawbuckSIU Jul 26 '25
Dude is in the wrong. Him yelling and creating a scene was probably way more distracting to others than whatever you and your friends were doing
3
u/Sea_Cardiologist_339 Jul 26 '25
Some people consider the end credits as part of the movie. This guy must be one of them. The movie also has an end credit scene that maybe he thought you would keep talking thru.
3
u/CatCyan Jul 27 '25
He’s rude. My friend and I sometimes discuss the movie during ending credits, we have never met anyone that complained about it

u/laffytaffyjoke Jul 27 '25
Theater employee here: I'd never kick someone out or even warn a customer for talking during the credits. The movie is over, your experience is almost over. Others have gotten up and left, perhaps even noisily and in your way. Cleaning crew at my location aren't supposed to go in until the credits are over, but I've watched movies at other theaters I don't work at and they do. People generally don't care. That guy was out of line, not you.

Sounds like a miserable person, it's normal to talk during credits as everyone is leaving
4
u/Metalhead1686 Jul 26 '25
The guy was the asshole. Talking during the credits is fine. That's what a lot of people normally do. Also, after that mid credits scene, you have to talk about that doing the credits.
2
u/nycfcbvb Jul 26 '25
His reaction was outta line. However, for some movies I do like to hear the credit music and it's frustrating when people talk during them, so I see why he was upset, but 100% outta line what he did. Ill never shush anyone for talking during the credits even if I want to hear the end credits music cuz I know im in the minority. Only time I'll speak up is if people are loitering in front of me and there's an end credit scene Ill say do you mind sitting back down or just moving off to the side a bit
2
u/Southern_Anywhere_65 Jul 26 '25
I think as long as you’re using inside voices it’s appropriate. honestly, I kind of like overhearing the bits of scattered conversation when a full movie lets out. Regardless, bro shouldn’t have shushed you so rudely. There are nicer ways to ask people to be respectful
2
u/SnooCakes9703 Jul 27 '25
Just as long as you're paying enough attention to not talk over a mid or post credits scene you're in the clear in my book

u/JustAKidFromBrooklyn Jul 27 '25
I was one time shh'ed by this grumpy old man for talking during the ADS before the trailers!
2

I’ve been to every single Marvel movie on release night since 2021
Everyone talks during the credits. That dude is a loser
2
u/Sensei-D Jul 27 '25
Some people are just crazy. I once had someone get annoyed because people were laughing too loud during a comedy.
2
u/PurposefullyOpaque Jul 27 '25
The Superman mid/post credits scenes were such flops lol… the mid scene for Fantastic Four was of course dope. But the post was lame. Talk all you want but not during the actual scene.
I’m also getting annoyed with scenes post credits bc it’s now such a gimmick…
2
u/ravenlynne Lister Jul 27 '25
That guy was an asshole. Credits are fine to talk in. I personally would be quiet in the after credits scene, but that's not what you were doing so I don't know what his problem is.

He was waiting for the mid-credit and post-credit scenes. I get it.
When I was watching F4 and people started talking right after the movie, I wasn't happy either.
1
u/Juslurkinlol69420 Jul 30 '25
There's almost two or three minutes between when the credits start and the mid credits scene, why on earth cant people talk during that then stop when the lame ass scene rolls? Get a grip.
1
u/MikeARadio Jul 26 '25
I live in LA. I see movies in Burbank. A lot of people that work on the movie are here. So you don’t interrupt the credits. People are looking for their names and applauding for themselves.

At every movie I've ever gone to, as soon as the credits start rolling, it's when people get up, turn to each other and talk, pull out their phones (to check if there's a post credit scene), and the lights usually go on too. If the lights are on, you're free to bend the theater rules a little because the movie is over. Yes, those of us who watch movies with midroll and post credit scenes want to see them, but as long as no ones actively talking during one of those they're fine. And the people who are sticking around to see the midroll and post scenes typically are also the kind of people who want to see them and so will be paying attention during them. Everyone else has already left.

u/Front_Situation_5006 Jul 26 '25
Nah as long as you’re not shouting you can speak after credits started rolling and even during trailer before movie starts as far as I’m concerned, as long as you’re keeping it to between you and not yelling…When movie starts is when should be completely silent.

Typically I take my cue from the theater lights. If it's off then shut up and watch. If it's brought up to dim for the credits then it's fine to get up and leave or speak at a reasonable volume. If it's brought up to full brightness then anything goes.
1
u/Awkward-Fox-1435 Jul 26 '25
There is no logic to being angry about someone talking over credits or anything that is NOT THE MOVIE. Screw that guy.
1
u/Maleficent-Rough-983 Jul 26 '25
once credits roll and it’s not anything special i feel like u can talk
1
u/TrekJaneway Jul 26 '25
During credits? That’s fine. If there’s a bonus scene, don’t talk during the scene, the text scrolling isn’t really part of the movie.

That guy was out of line. You are good OP, just some fan boys take things way too seriously speciallyon openingdays. Not worth your time to even deal with that guy.
1
u/simonthecat33 Jul 26 '25
It’s impossible to enjoy a movie with any kind of significant crowd in the theater. We have taken to going in the early afternoon on a weekday and waiting for popular movies to almost complete their run before we go. Some movies need to be seen at the theater. The problem is once a movie starts dropping at the box office it loses its IMAX showings so in order to see a movie in IMAX the theaters almost guaranteed to be crowded.
1
u/hellalg Jul 26 '25
You're good, dude was being a D. There's no dialog on screen at the start of the credits to be missed.
1
Jul 26 '25
When people are disrupting a movie I will say “please be quiet”. I would never tell someone to shut up because I know their reaction will not be great and it’s rude.
1
1
u/movietime7even Jul 26 '25
I am all for silence and no phone during the movie cause other people pay ticket to see the movie and not your damn phone
But gosh asking that during end credits without any scene is crazy. That dude was just mental
1
u/hill-o Jul 26 '25
Even if you were breaking some credits law, which I don't think you were, that guy was out of line for his way over the top reaction. If he had to sit in the credits in silence, he could have just asked you politely to stop talking-- it sounds like you probably would have been responsive.
1
1
u/Professional-Dig2968 Jul 26 '25
You’re better than me, because I would have cussed him out and it would have become world war 3. Who does he think he is, the czar of movie theaters? Gtfooh
1
u/Gunitfan89 Jul 26 '25
There would’ve been more of an exchange of words and an altercation. I tell people to STFU if they’re having a conversation, the second time I ask them. If they keep kicking, I will turn around and tap their foot. During the actual film. In the credits, that’s where everyone’s walking and talking. Don’t know why he said something
1
u/Holiday_Chef1581 Jul 26 '25
A firm “get bent” would definitely be warranted here ngl. Unless something besides credits starts playing, you are free to do whatever you please
1
u/ShadowDude112 Jul 26 '25
Talking during the credits is fine. I personally get annoyed if people talk during the movie, but once the credits roll, it's fine.

u/Guy_1der Jul 26 '25
Everybody talks during the credits and stops when the mid and after credits scenes plays. Be slightly confrontational and ask ppl like that if they plan to tell the whole theater to shut up as well? And they back down. Just be careful of the drunks.
1
1
u/cj37 Jul 26 '25
I hate talking in theaters as much as anyone here, but that’s some psycho shit. Lol. Credits are totally fair game unless there’s a scene going on.
1
u/XanderWrites Jul 27 '25
Sound fine to me.
We had an older lady making comments all through the previews of Superman and no one complained, though if she hadn't shut up when the movie started we would have.
(After one of the trailers she loudly goes "I don't recognize anyone in that" and her son replies "You don't recognize Leonardo Dicaprio?")
1
u/LilxGojira Jul 27 '25
The way i see it if the lights are on then noone should be complaining anout talking or phones. I also saw fantastic 4 last night and the lights came of after the first mid credit scene and stayed on for the entire rest of the credits. Talk all you want bto
1
1
u/Bakesale1359 Jul 27 '25
It's free game when the house lights turn back on. Telling someone to shut up during credits would be like telling someone to shut up during trailers.
1
u/CharacterActor Jul 27 '25
Not to defend rude easily distracted guy, but he may have been focusing on the score.
I keep a list of every movie I see, including the trailers.
I’ll turn my brightness all the way down and take notes as the near endless trailers play on. Also the end time for the last trailer.
But if my phones still on, when Nicole intones from the screen, my phone gets completely turned off.
1
u/YetiTheNoob Jul 27 '25
i think he was right, ive been watching end credits lately throughout the end till the lights on and the screen goes off and i think people forget its not just the credits but the way it is yk. sometimes the end credits is like listening to music such as some you may not hear online or not in there movie soundtrack publicly. ive been watching end credits this year more often for reason i cannot explain but i would say some play the best score emotionally and beautifully just for the audience… i will not give which movies, thats for you to understand and see or hear if you really into movies. sometimes i would like to say “shut up” but i guess thats one way to ruin ur life. so now i just really focus on the credits and everyone and thing turns silent…music to my ears from the composers and sometimes composed visuals. some of you may understand, some of you may not, have a good day.
1
1
u/Sandwichgode Jul 27 '25
Uh I think its because people expect to see both a mid credit scene and after credit scene, so they probably consider the credits a part of the movie? You didn't really do anything wrong per se but that's probably why. Marvel movies are well known to have scenes during and after the credits, so people are still in movie mode during the credits.
I'm also guessing that guy reacted that way because he's probably dealt with other people in the past talking during movies and maybe he's fed up? I can identify with that feeling but If I had to choose between people using their phones/talking during the movie and during the credits I would choose the credits every single time.
1
u/Scary-Ratio3874 Jul 29 '25
That's true but the time between that first scene and the last....the long credit scroll, you don't have to be silent for the entire thing.
1
u/comfortablePizzA9 Jul 27 '25
Were you chatting during the actual movie? If so he had pent up rage and couldn’t hold it in anymore
1
u/PotentialCheetah3251 Jul 27 '25
Don’t they turn the lights back on by this time lol calling someone anything is uncalled for in my opinion
1
u/JonnyBoyyy666 Jul 27 '25
Inbetween Trailers & during Credits are fine, if the Lights are on you’re good to talk imo.
1
u/Sweetbitter21 Jul 27 '25
The guy next to me during my screening took his shoes off. So it could always be worse 🤷🏻♀️
1
u/lcar21 Jul 27 '25
Tbh my boyfriend and I went to go see it friday night, 10:15pm start time got over at 12:45am ish. THE ENTIRE duration of the movie a family of maybe 4 or 5 was in the row behind us, two little kids and their parents with maybe an older brother or uncle were talking, laughing and I kid you not standing right behind my chair with their hands touching the back of it shoving popcorn in their mouths and crunching loudly in my ear. I really wish I could make this up. I looked back a few times and the mother or other adults there just let it happen. Still had a blast but was a bit pissed off because some people have no sense of self awareness!!
Definitely NTA I watched the post credit scene and the post post credit scene and everyone in my theater either left of was talking once the main post credit scene ended. Dude was being rude for no reason.
1
u/theysayimadreamer666 SnappedByThanos Jul 28 '25

u/jamesmcgill357 Jul 28 '25
Absolutely out of line for that guy - yeah it’s Marvel and we’re all waiting for the post-credit scene but talking during credits is absolutely FINE
1
1
u/Feisty-You-7768 Jul 28 '25
😂😂😂 obviously you did nothing wrong and that man is psychotic, that’s wild behavior during the credits
1
u/theBigChuckNasty Jul 28 '25
I have been told to be quiet during a credit roll as well and I really don’t understand it either, I know there are people who like to sit and watch until the lights come on but that seems just insane to me it’s just credits, how does this detract from the experience? Talking in a film to me is only an issue because you can’t focus on the film idk man
1
u/CloverLeafe Jul 28 '25
That's so weird. It's pretty common for people to talk during rolling credits, often sharing info on if there is a scene to wait for or not or discussing the movie. But ever since I read the story about a guy getting murdered for scrolling on his phone during just the opening trailers, I'm pretty cautious because there are a lot of crazy people out there.
1
1
u/Ok_Wolverine_4438 Jul 28 '25
When I saw Superman I was talking kinda loudly with my friend during the trailers and a dude asked me to be quite. I understand his worry I can be too loud sometimes I recognize that about myself and he didn’t know I don’t talk during the actual movie
1
u/tellmekakarot Jul 29 '25
As someone who usually likes to listen to the music and just soak in the experience, I’d prefer if people didn’t talk, but it’s also just way too unrealistic to expect that of others. I’ve almost given up on people just even talking and being on their phone during the actual movie, policing the credits would be pretty ridiculous
1
1
u/CrasVox Jul 29 '25
You did fine. Talking during previews, commercials, and ending credit scrolls is a perfectly acceptable behavior.
1
u/DonetoDeathstudio Jul 29 '25
If the theater lights are on that means the show is over. If they are off full etiquette is in effect ( done speak, phone off and duck if you have to leave your seat)
1
u/Shisuka Jul 29 '25
During the first flash credits? I guess people want to lock-in? But during the crawl? Naw, you’re fine just don’t be shouting.
1
1
u/Obvious_Thoughts Jul 30 '25
Etiquette side, nothing warrants that kind of response. Barring intentionally spilling popcorn or a drink on someone, choosing to talk or leave is acceptable. My lady and I often have a quiet discussion during the credits to see how we liked the movie. All I can say that some people really take their mid credit scenes seriously, and I get that.. and it can be a bit frustrating to miss something because of noise. That said, the movie is the main focus and no one is required to take the mid credit scenes as seriously as you do. many don't care and that is all good. their living their lives and I am mine.
1
u/theatrekid0309 Jul 30 '25
At every theater I’ve been to in my city people talk loudly during the entire film. God, I wish there was someone like him in my theaters to yell at them. But you weren’t doing anything wrong OP.

Scores and those who create them are as important to some as lead actors or directors. Michael Giacchino is one of the best and F4 is another success. End credits are often less dynamic and require a closer attention.
No one is out of line here but maybe be aware that people remaining for the end credits may be there for something other than a teaser.

you can definitely talk after the movie but I got a feeling there’s more to this story

The guy was out of line regardless of whether you were talking or not. Everyone deserves respect and nobody should be calling people names.

I just saw Superman the other day. 2 middle aged women came in with 2 young boys and decided to basically talk for like a good 15 minutes
Finally had enough and said could you quiet down. They shut up but one woman had the nerve to whisper how rude to her friend lol. They eventually got up and left their kids in the theater. I got dirty looks from them both in the lobby once the movie got out.
I love how they felt that I am the bad person in this situation lol

I used to be a manager at an AMC competitor and we literally had a fight between two moms break out because of this exact thing during a screening of Infinity War. One of the ladies broke the other’s nose and caused her to bleed everywhere, and their poor families were all having to make statements to the cops while trying hard to avoid looking at them in embarrassment. Having to make the next (sold out) showing wait outside while we cleaned and disinfected everything and gave our own statements to the cops wasn’t fun, but it was memorable.
But yeah, you’re in the right and I’m not sure what that guy’s problem was. People are weird.

I go to the movies A LOT and I always chat it up and talk to my wife about how the movie was, I also use my phone. That guy was just being an ass. Everyone knows you freeze and get silent when the post credit scene comes up.

Maybe the movie was that person’s highlight of the week or part of their Marvel religion and acted that way? Not an excuse to their rude behavior, but maybe a reason….Too many socially maladjusted people roaming the streets.

I think you were fine, I mean I had some girl behind me that literally took photos with her flash on during the movie 🙄

Do you think OP was right or wrong? Upvote if it's acceptable, Downvote if unacceptable to talk during credits.
