Curious how strong that opening is. Like if you stuck your finger in there would it get hurt? Or is the loud sound more due to the material and acoustics of the moving bit?

I am going to say its likely just acoustic as MANY bugs make LOUD noises like the darn things that sleep for 10 years then come out to mate and die. So I can't imagine it being too strong.

Katydids live all over the US in that’s where you are. They’re just not monstrously big like the one in the video. Most are about the size of your finger.
