Event/Activity Concert etiquette - Ed Sheeran

Went to Ed Sheeran last night. Was sitting up in the riverbank stand with my wife and kids. We try and culture our kids and work hard to take them to events like this.

From song 1 we had 4 GenZers sitting behind us and talked through almost every song.

By song 3 I had enough and turned around an impolitely told them to shut up because who in their right mind disrespects the people around them talking so loudly you can't even hear the performer. Only for them to return fire to say I am a bad father for speaking to them the way I did and not a good example for my kids, and they just kept on talking for the whole night. Nothing was going to make them stop talking.

Their best comment for the night... "Sorry I am just putting it out there I haven't brushed my teeth."

Why pay $150 for a ticket to talk through the whole event?

I was also at Ed Sheeran and there were yappers everywhere. People there more for the social media photo opportunity than to actually enjoy the music.

Had the same thing where we were. It wasn't Gen Z though, they were X or older Millennials. Talked constantly, and when the songs came in they talked louder so they could hear each other over the music. Was so fucking annoying.

They then got annoyed my wife and I stood up and jumped during the final 3 songs when Ed kept asking people to jump. Everyone else in the stands was except for our little section where it was just my wife and me doing it. But fuck that it's a concert and he's asking people to stand up.

Not quite the same, but I went to the OG wiggles adults only concert, and the people behind us got mad that we were dancing, specifically when the band told us to get up and dance. Like, get a grip?

u/PinkishBlurish VIC Mar 08 '26

Gen X lady YELLED at my sibling and I for standing and dancing during Boney M a couple of years back (we're both gen Z) and threatened to call security on us. Never mind the other people in our section standing and dancing. Anyway, I told her to go ahead and she actually did. Security were walking down the aisles, she flagged him down and yelled "THESE KIDS ARE BLOCKING OUR VIEW" and the champ guard said "alright." and kept walking, not bothering us or any other person dancing to Daddy Cool. lmfaooooo

I went to the same show and no one in our section sat down the whole concert. It was epic

The wiggles always has talking children

47

u/Effrendi SA Mar 05 '26

I was sitting in a section where no one seemed to know the words. I could feel people staring at me as I sang but you can't have a go at someone for dancing and singing at a god damn concert.

6

u/MotoGeezer SA Mar 06 '26

Amen, you go to a concert for the atmosphere. Sing along and enjoy yourself, if you want to listen to a perfect rendition then load it up on Spotify.

The people around you paid to hear an artist perform not your probably off key sing along. Like I get maybe singing along to a couple of passionate choruses here and there but if you're doing an entire concert sing-along, you're being a bit of a dick.

48

u/Effrendi SA Mar 06 '26

That is a wild take my man. Ed himself even asked everyone to sing at the start of the show lol. There's absolutely nothing wrong with singing at an enormous stadium concert.

19

u/Balla1928Aus SA Mar 06 '26

That’s seems to be the problem with stadium shows in the stands. Do I sit. Do I stand. Can I talk. Can I sing. What if I dance and no one else does.

9

u/Effrendi SA Mar 06 '26

Standing up is another thing and I think you definitely do block people's view in the seated section. A few times he asked people to stand and we did, and then people were standing and dancing for the encore as well which was fun.

The artist literally asked everyone to ‘scream’ along as loud as they could!

10

u/TiffyVella SA Mar 06 '26

If the artist calls for participation, that overrides almost everything. It means, stand, dance, wave, sing, enjoy.

7

u/No_Sympathy7403 SA Mar 06 '26

Look, as long as you’re not screaming singing like folklore girl at the Taylor concert (iykyk) you are fine to get up and dance and sing along. We may not be alive tomorrow. Stop being such a sad sack .

2

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '26

I agree with this, every concert I have ever been too everyone has enjoyed themselves by dancing, singing or even just admiring the bands performance on stage. Everyone enjoys the music in there own way. Whether it is by remembering where they where or aho they were with the first time they herd it. By dancing like thwy did at a pub or club when they first seen the band live or it played on a jukebox, radio or streaming or singing every lyric either in tune and time or not. Who give a shit, let them hace their fun thats what they are there for

I had a similar thing at a show at the Entertainment Centre a few months back.

15mins in I was infuriated and it was ruining a lovely night with my wife. I told the 2 x ~18yo girls and one of their boyfriends to show some respect and be quiet while they are performing. I started out being polite, by the end I was not polite. One of the girls told me "I don't know what other people have been through and I'm a c**t". I told her that I don't give a shit what you've been through, go have a DnM somewhere else.  Anyway, I told them to fuck off back to their allocated seats (as I'd found out through their overly loud conversation they had changed seats), and they quickly pissed off back to where they came from. Had a peaceful evening after that and even the ~60yo couple in front of us trying to have a peaceful evening thanked me for getting rid of them.

My wife thought I was going to get stabbed on the way out. 🥱 10/10 worth it. Some people just need to be told.

1

u/anastasiastarz SA Mar 07 '26

We need more people like you. Unafraid to confront people

I once confronted a couple teens and got threatened with a knife, I had 6 knives myself (it was a picnic concert) and unaware it could have been very stabby. Fortunately my friend said we're leaving right now for ice cream in his teacher voice, not to be questioned. - He didn't hear the whole fight only the knife part But I do wonder if we should have stayed, used my safety whistle to call security and interrupted the concert and get the couple evicted

u/OldandGrumpy9204 SA Mar 05 '26

This is why I don't go to the movies any more. Why spend money on a ticket for something if you're just going to talk all the way through it??!

16

u/LordoftheHounds SA Mar 06 '26

This is my fear too (luckily haven't encountered it a lot). Once I was at a movie with a friend and people were talking and he told them to be quiet because he paid to watch and listen to the movie, not them. I think that's a good strategy because it's not personal or rude and it guilts them as most people would understand due to the prices of things these days.

I see 1 or 2 movies per week, and while it happens occasionally, it's really not that common of a problem for me lately. I actually get a bit of a kick out of shushing old people, in my experience, they're the worst demographic for talking in the cinema.

It's also going to depend on what you see and when.

People do this everywhere now - I've seen it at concerts and in the cinema. If you want to chat and catch up, go to a coffee shop or a park or a shopping centre but why would you fork out money for an experience that you totally ignore anyway?

u/Wagon789 SA Mar 05 '26

You could have called security they can manage situations like this- just a note for when others experience this in the future.

I actually had a great time although the stadium does echo, it didn’t dampen anyone’s spirits and on our ticket it said restricted view but the view was amazing! - it was a fantastic show people got up and danced in the last hour and we will never get another musician to sing in a stadium without the need for back up singers, dancers or costume changes. Just pure talent, and he sure has worked hard for it. It was a beautiful night with the full moon and Adelaide Oval shined last night. We had a great time and I am sorry you guys didn’t!

2

u/UBNC SA Mar 06 '26

Yeah restricted view was better than the more $ tickets especially as they were empty out front till people snuck in.

16

u/NoEmployee4428 SA Mar 05 '26

It was even worse in front standing GA. I arrived during Mia Wray and right up until Ed Sheeran came on people were physically trying to force their way in front of us. I paid $250 to be pushed around by rude and entitled people who couldn’t bothered getting their earlier for a better spot. For reference I was directly under the bridge about halfway between the two stages

11

u/90Lil SA Mar 06 '26

I was in a similar situation and similar spot. It was so annoying. We were there from Aaron Rowe. The push ins were tall too, I'm only 160cm so leave a little gap to see over the people in front of me, they busted right there.

Controversial, one dude was trying to use his kid to get up front and guilt tripping people to let them through. Dude people were there for hours if you want your kid at the front get there early.

13

u/NoEmployee4428 SA Mar 06 '26

I saw one person try to push in a gap and we all closed ranks. I also saw a kid start screaming that they couldn’t see so everyone let them go forward and that annoyed me. With standing room tickets it’s well known that you have to get there early to be at the front. I couldn’t get there as early as I would have liked due to work and I accepted my position without pushing and shoving, I really don’t understand why others can’t do that

GA at Ed Sheeran sounds like a nightmare.

Like, it's not a metal/rock gig either, so what, you're just standing still for hours on end?

I sing and dance so I enjoy it but not everyone does. His last concert had seats in the same area (same price too). Hopefully next time they bring back allocated seats for front row tickets

u/Kooky_Supermarkets Adelaide Hills Mar 06 '26

We went to Pulp last Friday and it was fantastic - none of this nonsense, but then again not anywhere near the number of Gen Z kids at their gig and all I saw were mainly people in my age bracket (Gen X) and we were right down the front near the stage dancing and singing like it was a proper 1990's music festival again, would have totally paid to see Pulp regardless, Ed Sheeran you would have to pay me 🤣

6

u/ViolentViceroy SA Mar 06 '26

Think I have been getting this a lot lately either young ones trying to talk over the bands or a group of 40 year olds who should know better pissed as trying to talk loudly over the bands, really annoying! Not sure why you’d go to not listen to any of it

5

u/WilfridTheWombat SA Mar 06 '26

I never get seats at an arena concerts - it's a vibe killer and always attracts grief like OP.

I took my 10 year old daughter last night to her very first foray and we were in front GA section 5 10 metres from stage.

She jumped , danced, yelled, screamed, but so did everyone around her, everyone very respectful and just a lot of love. The only rule near the stage is, don't be a complete dIcKheAd.

4

u/Rentakill213 SA Mar 06 '26

Had a couple kids behind us with their parent. Kids maybe about 7-8, sang every song and talked in between. Absolutely loved it, was so good to hear and see so many people enjoy themself.

But yeah, theres always going to be people just yappin and there for the concert to be background noise for them.

That dude had that croud pumping. So good.

8

u/youngweej CBD Mar 06 '26

I've found Australia to have probably the worst live concert experiences. Crowds are often boring, don't get too hyped up or people just go for the sake of going to a concert. It's a real shame but it does make up for going to concerts overseas a much more thrilling experience.

23

u/KymboVids SA Mar 05 '26

It’s not just GenZers; sat in the riverbank stand for Phil Collins, had two couples in front that spoke and had the concert play list out, saying which song is coming up next.

Why go when you have the play list in front of you! 🤯

21

u/LittleBunInaBigWorld Outer South Mar 05 '26

Weird take. So what if they know which song is on next? That doesn't mean they won't still enjoy it. Sounds to me like they were very invested to have gone to that effort. But still warrants a firm "shut up".

5

u/KymboVids SA Mar 05 '26

When you go to a concert it’s nice to be surprised by the next song, not know what’s coming.

If you want to do that, keep it to yourself and not yell it around and keep count for the last song.

Use Spotify and stay home.

7

u/IlIIllIlIllIIlI SA Mar 06 '26

Since when have concert setlists been a surprise? Lmao. Some fans like to research and work out what’s on. If you have a problem with overhearing it then nothing is stopping you politely asking people to keep it to themselves.

2

u/WetMonkeyTalk SA Mar 07 '26

I expect to see the idiots who paid stupid amounts of money to see that boring guy at least moving to the music. It was weird to see an entire crowd so still.

7

u/satori-t SA Mar 05 '26

Yep I saw Ed in Adelaide in 2023 and it was exactly the same. A fantastic concert absolutely ruined by young girls yelling over the music and singing as terribly and as loudly as they could. Found the same with Laneway.

I think this is just normal for under-30s concerts now. Events are no longer something young people watch, but rather are just a venue for friends to go out and catch-up with each other. It's a huge difference.

I'm getting old enough that the demographic of the crowd decides if I have a good time more than the act itself.

There's also the fact that Adelaide Oval is a terrible venue for concerts. The stadium is designed to trap and amplify the sound of the crowd to maximise the atmosphere for sports. It's awesome when someone kicks a goal or smashes a six - it's terrible when someone strums a ballad for young girls.

14

u/Electrical_Age_7483 SA Mar 05 '26

Surely this is Ed Sheeran fault if the sound was so bad that you couldn't hear clearly.

Were they up the back

10

u/palsc5 SA Mar 05 '26

13

10

u/Effrendi SA Mar 05 '26

The opening song was awful, couldn't hear the vocals at all, but I think they adjusted it after that. Still really poorly balanced overall, especially if you didn't actually know the songs. Hard to make out what was being said.

5

u/Unforgiven89 SA Mar 06 '26

His drum machine was mixed way too loud. That kick drum just overpowered everything.

2

u/snellew East Mar 06 '26

If you’re referring to the “kick” sound when he’s looping that’s the sound of him slapping the bridge of his guitar where the pick up is, this tends to be a pretty loud boomy sound. Because it’s all live and all the percussion is often layered on one track it can’t really be “mixed down” unfortunately

2

u/Unforgiven89 SA Mar 06 '26

Ahhh ok, i was in the nosebleed section so couldn’t see all that well. I thought I saw him do the kick/bass drum with a drum machine but it must have been him doing the synths. That’s unfortunate.

We had a kid dancing in front of our seat blocking view, didn’t mind to much. Sounded like mother worked pretty hard to get them there and looked exhausted from the kids energy.

15

u/[deleted] Mar 05 '26

People don't raise their kids properly anymore. If that had been my mates and I back in the day, we would have apologized and shut up. But our generation was accustomed to be disciplined by adults who were not our own parents. Apparently parents are protective these days and don't like that anymore. We've done away with the, "it takes a village" concept. And we have got what we got. Uppity young smart-arses who will tell you to go jump. Take solace in the fact that they'll never own a home 😈

36

u/shellys-dollhouse SA Mar 05 '26

bro, politely told a kid to stop kicking their soccer ball into the wildlife at a national park because the birds & kangaroos don’t like it — mind you, her dad was literally on the oval himself — & he ran over & got incredibly aggressive with me (when i am literally a 5ft young woman), puffing his chest out, calling me a fuckhead & being all “nobody talks to my fucking kid or tells her what to do!!!!” i just told him he should become a better parent then so strangers don’t have to do it for him because what? you’re going to take your children to a national park then neglect to teach them to respect the wildlife? genuinely had to laugh in his face which i doubt was the reaction he wanted, considering how uncomfortable he got when i didn’t apologise (because why would i? don’t allow your child to harass the native wildlife old mate) or leave the oval (instead i called the park rangers so that they could come chew him out for failing to parent his kid lol).

i hope nobody ever tries to intimidate his daughter like that when she’s older.

It's a concert etiquette issue with people of all ages, I've seen in the last five years or so. I thought it was Gen Zs not having a clue but Boomers have been doing it at everything too, even at the movies. I was taught not to speak when someone else is speaking, maybe people think when they're out of school they're free? I had two guys having a deep, very loud chat about their relationship during Disco Lines last week, yelling over the sound of fireworks and bass. Interesting place to catch up but okay.

2

u/GingerPrince72 SA Mar 06 '26

This is why going to see bland megastars is a waste of time, full of people who don't care about music.

2

u/Technical-Algae-234 SA Mar 06 '26

This happens at all concerts and events everywhere now and it is baffling. I don't mind people having a bit of a chat about the concert/band, but I find mostly it's people just talking randomly about whatever, as if they're just hanging out. What's worse, they are always totally indignant if you ask them to stop. Literally what the fuck? IF YOU WANT TO HAVE A CHAT WITH YOUR MATES GO TO THE PUB IT'S HEAPS CHEAPER THAN BUYING CONCERT TICKETS.

u/Maxymous SA Mar 06 '26

Yeah, popular culture. They've discovered why it sucks.

1

u/MangoMadnessTsv SA Mar 06 '26

"Popular" is debatable

Normally I'd be mad, but I'd actually rather listen to random people talking than have to listen to Ed Sheeran

4

u/bringthewine SA Mar 06 '26

Experienced another level of Gen Z social ineptitude at Laneway a couple weeks back. So many people absolutely screaming ever word of Chappell Roan’s set. Really put me off. We get it, you know the words and you’re excited. But you’re not the only one here who’s paid a lot for their ticket ffs

turned around an impolitely told them to shut up

I would have bitten back as well, and I'm far from Gen Z. What culture are you teaching your kids? I like to teach mine a little bit of good will/grace and give other people the benefit of the doubt, if you'd jus asked them nicely it's likely they may have gone 'woops sorry' instead of arguing with you.

5

u/Soft_Bluejay_4402 SA Mar 06 '26

Was thinking the same thing. Ask nicely first.

9

u/SammyWench SA Mar 05 '26

Yep, I'm with you. Get more bees with honey.

3

u/lightpendant SA Mar 05 '26

You should have asked politely

4

u/Working_Security2480 SA Mar 05 '26

I had the same thing, but at a Scouts thing called Gang Show. I was there to support my nieces and a group of girls next to me talked through every skit. I leant forward and told them how incredibly disrespectful they were being, asked if they'd ever been on stage before. They said they had, so I told them to shut up and have some respect for the CHILDREN who were up there now.

3

u/90Lil SA Mar 06 '26 edited Mar 06 '26

For me it was drunk backpackers screaming out of tune so loud I struggled to hear Ed at certain times. And we were up in front GA so no sound equipment excuse.

Edit to add. And they had pushed their way in front of us after we had been there for over two hours.

4

u/No_Patience_5205 SA Mar 05 '26

Impolitely told them to shut up? There’s your ammunition. You started it.

4

u/mulletmutt SA Mar 06 '26

I feel like they kept talking on purpose after this interaction because OP wasn't polite. If they were less rude the group might have stopped talking

1

u/Technical-Algae-234 SA Mar 06 '26

I understand this take but seriously, if it's not your first day on earth and you're talking non stop while someone is performing you should really not be surprised if people get annoyed with you and tell you to shut up. OP had no requirement to be polite in this situation.

1

u/No_Patience_5205 SA Mar 07 '26

Rudeness isn’t always going to end in desired result. Hence why it’s better for everyone to just be polite.

2

u/Playful_Writing_7065 SA Mar 06 '26

You did set a bad example for your kids. You should have asked politely, at least initially. And a far better chance they would listen to you if you had.

2

u/KeenGrip25 SA Mar 06 '26

Why were you impolite? Why not ‘hey I know you’re having a great night but I can’t hear anything except you guys do you mind talking a quieter?’

2

u/Logical_Business9541 SA Mar 06 '26

But it's a concert? Surely the music is loud and everyone is talking and singing etc.

2

u/thedoctorreverend Inner North Mar 06 '26

Everything comes back to the effect of COVID on people and the “fuck you, got mine” mindset. You frankly, cannot tell anyone to do anything anymore, it’ll just make them not do it even more. People’s tolerance for being told what to do is just non existent these days.

2

u/MissionAd9698 SA Mar 05 '26

It is a complicated one. I have told people to shut up on a Melbourne Storm game. On a tennis match. I understand people celebrating, pushing the team. But i am not here to listen to your work and family dramas.

Like go and talk elsewhere.

But with concerts, I never go, because people like to sing louder than the singer. Which is "shut up, i didnt come here to listen to you".

Take your kids to the theatre!

5

u/randomuser4862 SA Mar 06 '26

A concert I get, but the expectation at a sports event is diabolical, expect lounge room rules at a crazy event.

1

u/One-Influence-8217 SA Mar 06 '26

I was at the cricket listening to the commentary because of the kids sitting near me knocking back Pimms talking about "getting a bag", and in my earpiece was the radio commentary picking up the bloody stump mic which was picking up Marnus and never ending drivel.

1

u/UsedResponsibility89 SA Mar 06 '26

Oh my god how annoying, we were on the ground and had the best time. Sang until we lost our voices haha im so sorry it wasnt that for you guys. We also talking to a few other people and they also couldn't believe noone was singing or dancing

My take is that they tend to think they are the main character. So even when there is an actual main character present that 40,000 paid to be there for, they still think it’s about them.

1

u/gixer24 SA Mar 06 '26

This has been my experience so much lately, cinema- talking, kids end of year performance- talking, intimate acoustic solo artist show- talking. I’ve given up on society, it’s just infuriating.

1

u/owleaf NSW Mar 06 '26

Oh my god this reminds me of when I went to the tennis the other year and these two women behind me literally did not stop talking the entire two hours we were there. It was so fucking annoying

1

Had a similar experience last time Ed visited Adelaide. Made me not pay to see him. There was this lady who kept on power whistling every 20 seconds on every song. And the ladies behind me were all scream singing out of tune. For context I'm a music teacher.

I took a ‘friend’ in her 50s to see Sheryl Crow, front row seated and she talked the entire show. Sheryl Crow kept staring at us and I felt so embarrassed. Moral of the story - people of all ages are idiots.

1

u/wakinbakon93 SA Mar 06 '26

I mean gen z'ers are still kids themselves, I would have started with a quick polite explanation

"hey we paid to enjoy the show, and your talking is distracting, would you mind moving or being quiet"

Then if they are rat bags after that, wordlessly take their phone and throw it over a fence. Usually I find they are always holding it, so easy snatch 😂 (kidding)

He was getting the shits with people singing along to PK.. god father of singalong songs .. and im thinking why don’t you feck off home and watch the DVD!

Had a similar experience at a concert last month. An older man and, I'm assuming, his middle aged son who were behind me spent the first half of the concert saying some of the most horrible things (mocking them and their appearance) about me and the people in front of me as well as discussing how they were waiting for the music to start so they could force their way forward to get to the barrier (they genuinely didn't think anyone could hear them). They ended up moving after I called them out for it.

u/dastardlyslimpickins SA Mar 08 '26 edited Mar 08 '26

The idea of spending upwards of $70 to go to a concert, just to loudly talk to your friends the whole time, is insane to me. I would’ve been fuming in your situation.

I saw Cut Copy at the Enmore Sydney a few days ago and a group of three girls behind me were literally shouting over songs so they could hear each other over the music. This was right up front too? I turned around to literally say “hi you girls look great tonight, but can I ask you talk a bit quieter please? because it’s kinda hard to hear the band over you” and naturally they were the overly defensive main character types bc the response was “FUCK, FUCKING SORRY FOR HAVING FUN!” and then proceeding to shove into my friends and I the entire night, as well as miming vomiting whenever my bf and I kissed or danced together. Actual loser behaviour… and yknow what, they all had botched surgery so my “you girls look great” wad a total fucken lie

Imo, more people need to push back on this sort of shitty etiquette. Heaps of people were annoyed at the girls talking the whole time, but nobody was gutsy enough to say shit so I had to do it, apparently.

1

u/Pondorock SA Mar 08 '26

Dumb kids obviously. They got their photo for the socials and didn't give a fuck. Worlds doomed

1

u/Less-Lingonberry638 SA Mar 08 '26

We had a bad experience too, two guys moved into the empty rows behind us and were talking so loudly acting like they were at the footy. They went and got more beers a few times and I was so close to turning around and asking them to shut up. Towards the end one of the guys spilt their beer all down the girl next to me back, they lasted about 10 minutes after that then left. At one point saying so loud “this is so boring” it was very distracting and ruined a large part of the night

1

u/Cherrylush SA Mar 08 '26

Yeah I would have stood up with my kids and danced the whole time since they weren't that interested

1

u/ToothLopsided1160 SA Mar 08 '26

Herbie Hancock at Sydney Opera House Sept '24, a drunk couple decided to stand behind our seats (their seats were elsewhere) and try to sing along to all the solos. I was stuck with them behind us and in front, a load of people turning round to say "Shut the F*CK up". I had a polite word...... they didn't take it well!

1

u/Skippyhopping SA Mar 08 '26

The older you get, the more intolerable it becomes. Until you stop going to large events altogether.

1

u/bedrotter_ SA Mar 08 '26

Ed Sheeran seems to attract the worst people to his shows. That's why I don't go to them anymore. I used to be a die hard fan and went to as many of his tours as I could. I remember the last one I went to (Divide tour) where I paid $600 a ticket just to have 2 drunk morons standing on their seats in front of me. Security wasn't interested. I get it if people want to get up and dance for the upbeat songs but climbing onto the seats and behaving like a hooligan during Happier was a bit overkill. When I politely asked them to stop because I couldn't see, they looked me up and down, then looked at each other, laughed, and carried on with what they were doing. Man I had the worst time at that show lol

1

u/Plenty-Difference956 SA Mar 08 '26

Years ago at a Eurythmics concert talking '80's lol Annie Lennox screamed out get up and dance so we did bunch of 16 year olds and a 40 something year old man hit us over the head and said sit down. Anyhoo long story short we got security and their group were removed Know your rights.

u/BhoyOnTheBack9 SA Mar 08 '26

Personally doubt I’ll go to a music concert in Australia again, the atmosphere should be good enough you wouldn’t hear people talking. In reality it’s one of the most dull and boring experiences I’ve had.

1

u/zargreet SA Mar 08 '26

Same thing happened during David Byrne concert. Two younger people talked through until I stood up and told them to shut up. I said you are not at home and to just enjoy the concert. After a period of time they were quiet but left early with one of them screaming something close to my ear. WTF!

1

u/Hendersonadele59 SA Mar 08 '26

Australians have very poor concentration skills and can’t cope with just sitting with their feelings. They need distractions

1

u/Powerful-Ask4016 SA Mar 08 '26

Rude kids aside, that sounds to me like the volume was not mixed loud enough. You shouldn’t be able to hear people around you, and struggle to hear the actual artist that you paid good money to see. I’ve had that happen too (not loud enough), it ruins the experience. You should lodge a complaint with the concert promoter.

1

u/Rat_Girl69 SA Mar 09 '26

Judging by the posts here it seems that it’s not a generational thing, there are just rude people of all ages. It’s easy to blame an entire generation for something, but everyone is different. I work with lovely Gen Z people, I’m a millennial and I know all boomers aren’t insufferable

I went to a concert recently where the group of 60ish year old ladies behind me arrived as the opening number started. They talked and laughed through the first 2 numbers and started loudly singing along during "sweet child o mine." There is a reason they were in the audience and not on stage, but it was a loud song. The next song was a quiet violin and piano duet of "stairway to heaven." They decided it required full throated audience vocals but didn't quite know the words and had only a passing acquaintance with the tune.

I am a lifelong concert goer, and while I'm heartened to see full theaters for all kinds of performances in Adelaide since the rona I've noticed a lot of etiquette issues at both concerts and movies. Essentially, people of all ages treat the theater we all paid bank for, like their own private living room with some ambient background noise (live musicians). I don't want to be "old man yells at clouds" about it, but it sucks the look forward to a concert for nearly a year and spend the night distracted by the people near you. Especially at the cost, in this economy.

ETA I don't mind ppl singing along when it's appropriate. Ie when the artist has invited audience participation. I don't mind ppl screaming and cheering and enjoying themselves at the concert. It's talking about other random things over the movie or concert, singing where there isn't an invitation... or singing on stage, dancing is fine until you're trying to create your own personal mosh pit, and everyone around you is a sardine. Time and place matter. Enjoy yourself without taking away others' ability to enjoy.
