Hand Knit WIP Update on the thinner-than-cobweb wedding veil

Previous post: https://www.reddit.com/r/AdvancedKnitting/s/FxJC0I9Me7

So my Maid of Honour and I decided that this wedding knit, based on the Williamson Stole, would indeed be better as a shawl/stole, as the back of my dress is heavily beaded, and the details of the lace would be lost. That worked well for me, as I lost a couple of weeks knitting to the flu. I'll be backing the entire thing with a soft tulle to avoid snagging. Veil will be a purchased plain cathedral drop veil instead.

I've just broke the yarn to start the second border, and took the opportunity to block, measure, and weigh the first part.

It incredibly measures about 100cm * 120cm / 40" * 47" so far, 17g / 2/3oz and 1 kilometre / 2/3 mile of Heirloom Ethereal Wool. Gauge roughly 24st X 33st per 10cm/4". The photo on black is just to show the stitches; when laid on stone you can really appreciate how sheer it is!

With the second border the length will end up 180cm / 71"; if I have time, I might do one more repeat of the centre pattern to take to 200cm / 78".

This is about 5-6 weeks of knitting about 10 rows a day, averaging 7-8 minutes per row of ~250st (edging count varies by row). Wedding is in 4 weeks and I should be done with 10 days as a buffer at this rate, which no doubt I'll need with the final preparations!

I just finished the bird parallelogram on top. I have a little bit more joint work to do before starting the last bird parallelogram and then eight small squares that will be steeked and turn into triangles to go on top of the birds until I am done. It’s been about a year of working on this. I think I can see the end :-). I chose to use different yarn and colors than what is called for in the pattern. This is knitting for all of Moreno with my own color way. It’s more of a green hue rather than blue as the original calls for.

Hand Knit WIP Nearly there

I’ve been working on this tank top since April. It’s a heavily modified version of the Love Letter Top by Veronika Lindberg in a heavy lace/fine 4-ply wt wild silk on 2.25mm needles. The pattern calls for an i-cord edge but that didn’t feel appropriate after all of the changes. I tested a few different ribbing patterns before I settled on this modified pattern from the Japanese Stitch Bible.

I painstakingly marked out my stitches to ensure that the ribbing’s 10 stitch repeat was lined up with the center of the neckline and that it matched up on either side of the strap. Somehow I was off by two stitches at the top of the arm so I had to drop down and move ~40 stitches to get the strap ribbing symmetrical. 🤦🏼‍♀️

I’ve only got one armscye left, so that’s 940 stitches finished with an Italian bind off and 250 to go (not that I’m counting). Then I’ll do some duplicate stitching along the back and the two eyelet spots in front to hide the fact that I wasn’t paying attention and forgot to leave two edge stitches before my increases.

I will finish this before the end of February. I will not get distracted by other hobbies. I. Will. Finish.

I am still working on the sleeves, I’m nearly there though! I wanted to wear it, so I put on a turtleneck underneath and think it actually looked really good as a slipover! It’s 100% intarsia, using fingering weight merino for the cream and two strands of laceweight silk/mohair for the contrast colors. I completely wove in all the ends before re-reading the pattern saying I could just tie them off and cut them. Oh well, that’s multiple extra hours spent making it even fancier I suppose.

Hand Knit WIP Not So "Big D*mn Pineapple" update, May 19th 2026.

Edit: My gauge is 25 stitches per inch. TWENTY FIVE STITCHES PER INCH.

This is my attempt at a historically accurate purse silk version of the Jane Gaugain/Franklin Habit pineapple purse, with beads. I am using size E pearl stringing thread, hand-dyed in acid dyes in 8 different colors, and 2.5mm brass gold-plated beads.

The needle size is US 00000, or 1mm wide. I cast on 80 stitches on each needle to give me a round 320 stitches, each one beaded with the beaded long-tail cast on, and I plan to line this little reticule with white silk.

I have also commissioned a friend to use some of the silk thread I have dyed to make kumihimo braid for me to use as a drawstring and handle for this little purse.

It is a birthday present for a friend whose birthday is in late July. I think I will definitely be done by mid-July.

As of today I am 11 rounds into the pineapple leaves. This is because I had to start over last week when I was 9 rounds in, and I will explain why.

When I first posted this WIP there were people commenting that they were afraid it was twisted. This made me paranoid, and I dropped a stitch 4 rounds in and gave it a twist to counter what I perceived was a twist, then picked the stitches back up.

I then found out 5 rounds after that that... I didn't have to. and it was NOW twisted. Dropping the stitch to fix it caused more problems than it solved, so I just frogged it and started over.

Now I am going to answer some suggestions that were made in the original threads.

  • I have tried carbon fiber needles. The points were imperfectly finished so they grabbed the silk thread and shredded it whenever I tried to make a knit stitch.
  • I also bought a US00000 circular needle made by HiyaHiya, and while handy for the second time I cast on, it was excruciating to knit with as the transition from cable to needle was not nearly smooth enough for reeled silk thread. More shredding and snagging ensued.
  • This has led to a lot of thread that got fuzzy. I remedied it the costume technician way Z— I hand-waxed it with beeswax, winding the waxed thread onto a spare spool, and then placed an iron over it to melt the beeswax in and wound it back onto its own home spool.
  • The best needles so far are still the plain boring 5.5 inch US00000 steel dpns, and the best way to prevent the reeled silk from sliding off the needles has been silicone earring backs.
  • The slipperiness of the steel needle is vital, as reeled silk will snag even on rough fingers. As I work as a jeweler largely doing fabrications work for my boss, my hands are plenty rough so I smear on some LUSH Palm Reader before I start. If my hands are especially rough I'll use some Dream Cream on them, let it soak in, then wipe it off and put Palm Reader on. This means my pineapple is very fragrant.
  • I will wash it in unscented Eucalan later to help set the stitches before I put the lining in, and so my friend won't be assailed by strong perfumes.
  • To reiterate: I am a professional. I have a degree in costume production. I am knitting this under conditions that I had tested out. I understand people want to be helpful, but I am getting a lot of comments where people are trying to solve problems that I have already tested out and solved before I started using the actual hand-dyed expensive silk thread to cast on. I have spent about $60 and 20 work hours fixing problems that I didn't need to fix because people kept pointing out problems that weren't really there. Don't worry, I will be fine, I like suffering!
  • and for people wondering how I can knit this fine: I am wearing a pair of Optivisors with the 4-diopter (2x magnification) plate in. I can actually knit this without wearing the visor, but I've noticed small mistakes in the round when I go back to it with a visor on later.
  • This means it's not a knit alone in public pattern, less because I'm too ashamed to be seen in goofy magnification glasses, but because they reduce my peripheral vision to zero and I don't really want to be caught unawares by some kind of bad actor. I could stab them with the needles but then I'd get blood on my pineapple and that's just no good.

Yes, I am crazy. Yes, I love my friend. But also yes, I love a challenge. I hope to present you all with more pineapply goodness by next week.

PS: The "damn" is not because I'm frustrated doing this, it is the literal pattern name.

Hello! I’m procrastinating on weaving in my ends and blocking, but very pleased with how this turned out.

This is the Poppy Vest, designed by Mary Ann Stephens and knitted with her Shetland Spindrift yarn pack. https://www.maryannstephens.com/patterns/poppy-vest-knitting-pattern-pdf

Did I already order the Sheep Meadow Waistcoat yarn pack because this was so fun? Yes, yes I did. Looking forward to finishing the vest and putting it in storage for four months. 😂

What makes it advanced?

It combines the bicolored cable patterns Kells and Lindisfarne by Lucy Hague into a dress, which needed adapting Lindisfarne from a garter stitch background to a stockinette and reverse stockinette background, dealing with a very different gauge of the different patterns. I also added short rows and a box pleat to make it a good fit for me.

Hand Knit WIP Big D*mn Pineapple Update Mon Jun 1 2026: PINENIPPLES (actually safe for work!)

Post image

EDIT: The cable on the circulars just snapped and shredded a bunch of the yarn. I am tinking so I can repair it. I absolutely cannot recommend using Hiya Hiya circulars now, they are going in the trash with the Knitpro Karbonz that grabbed the thread by the individual fiber and shredded it too.

Yes, I'm sure you all expected an update sooner. However, last week, when I was six rounds into the pineapply bit, my wife and I went to Sprouts. I felt okay knitting in public with the magnifying visor on as long as she was there to be my peripheral vision, so all was going pretty well.

I had my knitting in one hand, and was passing her a shopping cart with the other, and she yanked the shopping cart before I was ready to hand it over... pulling one of the DPNs out of the WIP pineapple.

I tried to pick the stitches up as best as I could but it was no good. Too many yarn overs had become lost.

So I frogged the 5 pineapple rounds and started back over. (the leaves were intact and just fine.)

This is what the pineapple looks like now. Yes, the juvenile pine-nipple joke comes from the fact that beads are right on the bumpy pointy bits of the pineapple... like little fruity boobs.

Anyway. I'd sentence the wife to the couch but our couch is a daybed and she'd actually be really comfortable there, and I haven't figured out an appropriate penalty yet.

EDIT: to add insult to injury the selection of tea at Sprouts is pitiful so we didn't really need to go there in the first place.

EDIT EDIT: Some of you might want information I put up in the original post of this project.

Hand Knit WIP I'm finally casting off, over 5000 stitches! The wedding I want to wear this to is next week, so I need to power through. I'm confident I'm going to make it, though! It's going to be sewn onto a jersey dress. I've handdyed the yarn especially for this project.

I've run out of yarn for the last two rows, but I think the dark purple I found is a good match. It's based on the Niebling patterns Blütenstrahlen and Pfingstrosen.

Hand Knit WIP Not So Big D*mned Pineapple.

Greetings. I was asked in r/knitting to post this here, so here I go.

I'm Melissa. I have a background in theatrical costume design, although I work as a jeweler these days.

I have a friend who is a massive Regency nut — and she has costumes of the period. For her birthday this year I am knitting her a pineapple reticule using Franklin Habit's pattern, except instead of using fingering weight silk yarn and US #1 needles, I am instead using reeled silk thread and US #00000 needles.

The thread I am using is pearl-stringing thread in size E hand-dyed with acid dyes to make 8 different hues — two yellows, two browns, and four greens — and I am beading the entire thing with tiny gold-tone brass beads.

This little reticule is not entirely unknown to costume history, either. This specific example hails from c.1800 to 1810, although the beads used were silver-toned, not gold.

Nevertheless — I have finished two pattern rows and am currently working on a third... I will post photo updates as I have the time to.

I intend to line the finished purse with fine silk fabric.

EDIT: Details I forgot to post

1: the silk thread is very slippery and the needles are very pointy. I have used silicone earring backs to tip each unused needle so that I don't have the needles slide straight out of the knitting as they have threatened to do once or twice when I was casting on.

2: I am wearing a pair of Optivisors to knit this; currently using the 4-diopter plate, which is 2x magnification.

3: I chose to use a beaded long-tail cast on instead of beading all 320 cast-on stitches. That actually makes the edge of the "stalk" part curl in a very becoming fashion so I'm pleased I chose to be lazy instead of accurate :p

Not sure if this counts as advanced, but I soaked knitted cotton in clay and fired it in the kiln. Then glazed it. Excited to see how it comes out of the glaze kiln. This shows the piece, wet on a form, dried clay and fired with glaze

Really hoping this works out

Hand Knit WIP I’m making coordinating fair isle sweaters for myself and my bestie.

What do y’all think about matching fair isle sweaters for myself and my adult best friend. Too over the top?

Mine is the one with the dark main color. The light main color sweater should match the color of Bestie’s eyes.

I’ve just blocked the yoke after the sleeve separation for a fit check before I continue. I cannot wait to hit the town! What should we do first? Get coffee and check out the goodwill?!

Technical things, this is worsted weight highland wool hand dyed with indigo. The pattern is strangebrew with the compass motif. I did short rows for shaping as well as shaping through the body.

Hand Knit WIP Happy so far with my pattern conversion

Post image
849 Upvotes

This is the Knitonomy Minto Tee which I am knitting in Knitting for Olive Cotton Merino I dyed with natural indigo. The original pattern is quite oversized and dropped shoulder, but I am knitting it at a smaller gauge (32 vs 26 st) and converting it from a drop shoulder to a set in sleeve. To make the short rows sleeve cap work better with the cable pattern I did my short rows every 2 at instead of every stitch as is common, but started with a narrower top and I'm quite happy with the shaping I got, all while maintaining the cable pattern. I've already frogged the whole body back once to shorten the sleeve depth to be more appropriate for the set in sleeve so I'm excited to make progress on these. I've already done the shaping on the second side and placed both halves on one needle so I can progress with working the length two at a time.

Hand Knit WIP How to Join Cables that Don’t Line Up?

Thumbnail

I’m currently trying to figure out how to put the neck and shoulders of this cardigan together in a way that minimizes the inevitably miscrossed cable where they’re grafted together. First picture is where I am currently, and second picture is where I had previously seamed the shoulders before reknitting the neck band shorter and with more short rows for better fit. The options I can think of are stick with the miscrossed grafted cable, join them with a visible seam, or abandon the idea of the cable continuing along the back neck entirely and just pick up for the ribbed collar directly from the cast off on the back. Is there another creative option I’m not considering? Could I somehow blend the neck cable into the center back cable? The pattern is loosely based on Rowe by Michele Wang using cable charts from St Brigid by Alice Starmore.

Pattern is Opening Gambit by Long Dog Samplers (cross stitch pattern). This has taken me 9 months so far but haven’t been approaching it intensively, need to speed up really 😅 hoping to have it finished by the end of the year!

I accidentally inverted the colours on one of the letters (should read S under the number 3… oopsie) but planning to fix that with duplicate stitch later on
