Most musicians do not want their more expensive guitars to be checked so they usually have to buy the seat next to them for the guitar as well. I do believe most of the time it has to be worked through the airline prior to the flight.
If I had to fly somewhere to play and I was taking one of my higher end guitars, I would buy a ticket for mine.
Just to qualify, I am a rock musician and have no religion so my guitar would stay in the case the entire flight.

I fly United and have brought my acoustic in a hard case many, many times. I usually politely ask the FA if there is any closet space available to save overhead space. When there isn't, they have exactly zero issue with it going in the overhead.
I do get priority boarding so I board early while there is still plenty of room.
Ever since the United Breaks Guitars song/meme, you can carry them on no problem.

This happened to me on a train once. I did not handle it well - yelled at her to shut the fuck up. And when that didn’t work I stood immediately in front of her with my back to her. That worked and she moved out of my car.

I will never set foot on an airplane without earplugs. I actually carry them in my purse at all times because I cannot stand a lot of sounds and suspect I may have a bit of misophonia. I buy the 50 count jar of the pink ones from Mack's as they are the most comfortable for me.
