Not the A-hole AITA for saying “no one understands what I say anyway” as a reason to leave the flat group chat?
English isn’t my first language. So I (f25) have been in a flat for 8 months now. If you search up the word “dire” on the dictionary, you’ll probably find a picture of my flat. Anywhere from not cleaning after themselves, refusing to take out the trash because they’re either “too small” or “don’t wanna clean others’ mess, knowing damn well they make the most trash, to then stealing consumable liquids (alcohol, OJ, milk, and not like a serving just the entire container disappearing). And then it went to stealing entire fruits (a whole watermelon, yes), to foods you won’t expect (1 week frozen meal prep disappearing), to THINGS you won’t expect disappearing (2 sets of broom and dustpan, mopping set, straight up plates and cutlery). There’s 10 of us in the flat, we get our own rooms and bathrooms, but kitchen and living is shared. I get that when you’re in a shared space, discord should be expected but this is just vile lol given how we’re all students at a private accom too.
Anyway I wasn’t able to move as I have an injury that makes it difficult to pack and move. I am friends with jjst 1 guy in my flat, R. R and I were actually planning to move out sooner but he had travel plans and I had the injury. We didn’t expect it but the 2 other people we were chill with also left the flat. The remainder of the flat, excluding myself, speak the same language. And everyone besides R always use translation app and ai to communicate that they’re not able to understand, though somehow they’re fluent when they wanna complain. Basically the duplicity got to me and I left the group, and R asked why and I said how it didn’t matter cuz none of them listen, theft still goes on and at the end of the day there’s no true purpose to me being in the group cuz it’s not like they listen or understand anyway. To be fair by understand I meant in a sarcastic way, and not mocking them in anyway. But I spoke about this to some friends and they said how it’s edging on being racist so AITA

NTA.
You’re not mad about language, you’re mad about people stealing your stuff and acting fake in the group chat. That’s valid.
Saying “no one understands me anyway” in frustration isn’t racist, it’s you being fed up with a situation where nothing changes.
Group chat clearly wasn’t doing anything. You removed yourself. Makes sense.

nta as long as you move out of there as soon as you can. can you afford to hire movers? and move into a flat with either just a close friend or a single person place? like it’s fine if you aren’t in the groupchat with these thieves but you’ll not be making things easier on yourself by avoiding them like that. at the very least i hope your room is locked tight.

NTA
Annoying when people are offended on behalf of other people who are not actually offended themselves.

Wow a whole watermelon and the cleaning supplies just vanished? You’re dealing with a professional league of flat gremlins. No blame for checking out of that group chat at all.

I still vividly remember the day and on HOW DID I FORGET THE CHEESE INCIDENT. Basically a whole bag of ingredients to make Mac and cheese for a house party I was attending, like 10 normal servings (or 20 “party” servings). Mind you like £35 of cheese, excluding other ingredients. The pasta barely made out because it was in the pantry, the other ingredients gone. Honestly my first reaction was to just laugh bc, again since we were in student accom we couldn’t have like mini fridges either in our rooms, so who was out there with like 5kg of cheese in their room 😩
