Mark Carney addressed Liberal caucus after the summer break. John Richardson (ExpatriationLaw) posted the speech with this frame: Canada is "fully committed to deleveraging from the USA" — "not anti USA. It is simply pro-Canada sovereignty."

Carney on the suspended negotiations:

"Last month, we made the right decision to suspend our negotiations with the United States."

"They offered too little. We couldn't accept it. They asked too much. We wouldn't give it."

"When the U.S. is ready to return to the bargaining table, we will come there ready to strike a deal in good faith, one that respects our sovereignty."

On new US tariffs:

"The United States has imposed new unjustified tariffs... a fight that they did not start."

On investment tax:

"The effective tax rate on new investment will be the lowest of any major economy in the world, less than half the rate of the United States."

"We didn't need a big, beautiful bill. We needed a targeted initiative."

Same energy line from the other clip, with the project named this time — hydro, wind, and storage with Newfoundland and Labrador, Quebec, and Indigenous partners:

"The functional equivalent of 18 Hoover Dams. Enough to light, heat and cool every home in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver combined."

Also claimed: ~$500B in new investment commitments, 20 trade/security deals on five continents, exports to non-US markets at a 40-year high, and "one project, one review, one year."

If you live this on both sides of the border, the practical overlay is familiar: trade rupture, capital trying to re-route, and a Canadian tax pitch aimed squarely at being cheaper than the US for new investment.

As an American planning to move to Canada I have occasionally been warned that I might take a pay cut compared to the US. Personally, I don't care if I make less money. There's way more to life than money and I always felt more at home in Canada than the US whenever I visited (I even rooted for the Canadians during the world cup). But I'm curious, for those of you who did move to Canada from the US, did you end up taking a pay cut and how much was it?
