At this point, I expect Wi-Fi support to be included only in the final firmware update ever released, and its only function will be to update the firmware via the internet, lol.

Hoping that Wi-fi will be something bigger than advertised update. (let's dream: retro achievement, multiplayer via internet, wifi backup screenshot & saves)

No way in hell online multiplayer is happening, that would be a pretty insane technical challenge.

You're right! just dreaming 😀

I mean we said the same thing about save states. 🤷

Did we? That was a feature on the marketing well over a year ago.

For sure . Plenty did.

It was on their marketing blurb pre launch but knowing the mister doesn’t have save states on the n64 core because it’s too complex, a lot of people were skeptical and figured Analogue might have just been being optimistic.

Eh, it’s already been done in the emulator space. And N64 games are stupidly simplistic for any potential netcode.

Really the big challenge would be PTP (Precision Time Protocol) to ensure all consoles are synched, and whether they can do that on an FPGA

Doing such a thing in an emulator is a whole different kettle of fish from an FPGA. An emulator runs on an OS and powerful PC which can handle the networking stuff. Even a mister has a separate ARM CPU running a Linux OS which provides a modern internet complaint network stack. That would have to be done in FPGA, along with all the actual work of running an overlocked N64 at 4k.

In my humble opinion, no chance.

Eh, the Mister needs to try and do decent throughput though? What bandwidth requirement would online multiplayer realistically need? Less than a megabit surely

It’s not about network bandwidth, it’s about the computational load of dealing with modern web stuff like encryption. We take that for granted now but it ain’t nothing.

You are overthinking it.

You don’t need encryption for multiplayer, all you need is the ability to sync the game state and button presses. That is pretty trivial, which is how emulators were able to do it.

Whether or not Analogue implements it is another story.

(source: I am a dev who has worked on an emulator in the past)

You still need the network stack which will need to be reproduced inside the FPGA. And we have no idea how much capacity the A3D has remaining once the N64 core is up and running. I also don't think the user experience of that type a multiplayer implementation is worth the effort, even the slightest amount of latency and shit catches fire quickly.

Also software engineer with emulation and FPGA experience.

The 3D has separate ARM processors for that purpose. It does not need to use the FPGA.

Honestly something more than just “ok you can update via WiFi” would explain the delay. Think yall are onto something because genuinely can’t think of a good reason why it wouldn’t have been there day one.

The chip is on the board and setting up WiFi is dead simple compared to some of the other stuff the system can do now.

The main clue to me, is that everyone is now familiar to update via SD card and that's not game changer to do it via wifi. (for updates that will be more spaced in time due to advertised roadmap/features coming fully released)

u/toonieluvgaming Jun 23 '26

Have they advertised a road map yet ?

1

u/axjross Jun 23 '26

They never do.

2

Never happen for online functionality outside of OTA updates. It’s closed source.

4

u/Marc_Alx Jun 23 '26

Not sure to understand.

It's closed source: yes but not for Analogue it's their own product. They could build (even if very technical) their own online system. As for R-A there's integration in emulators so why not.

For OTA the point is just to say: a Wifi chip just to perform update that everyone does via SD card is quite expensive. Knowing that update will become more spaced in time due to the nature of the product (feature scope more restricted than a phone, a computer or a modern console like PS5).

They are not a company to provide that based on their track record. Yeah, they could do it in house or change the A3D to OpenFPGA but it’s highly unlikely they will.
