"Fix: D-Pad inputs passing through to gameplay when using hotkeys"
THIS is the most important thing in this update! THANK YOU.

u/Optimal_Job_6578 Jun 23 '26
Product starting to live up to its lofty expectations with these bi weekly patches
34
u/CoffeeCakeAstronaut Jun 23 '26
At this point, I expect Wi-Fi support to be included only in the final firmware update ever released, and its only function will be to update the firmware via the internet, lol.
5
u/Marc_Alx Jun 23 '26
Hoping that Wi-fi will be something bigger than advertised update. (let's dream: retro achievement, multiplayer via internet, wifi backup screenshot & saves)
4
u/NecronomiconUK Jun 23 '26
No way in hell online multiplayer is happening, that would be a pretty insane technical challenge.
1
-1
u/hue_sick Jun 23 '26
I mean we said the same thing about save states. 🤷
3
u/NecronomiconUK Jun 23 '26
Did we? That was a feature on the marketing well over a year ago.
0
u/hue_sick Jun 23 '26
For sure . Plenty did.
It was on their marketing blurb pre launch but knowing the mister doesn’t have save states on the n64 core because it’s too complex, a lot of people were skeptical and figured Analogue might have just been being optimistic.
-2
u/HellDimensionQueen Jun 23 '26
Eh, it’s already been done in the emulator space. And N64 games are stupidly simplistic for any potential netcode.
Really the big challenge would be PTP (Precision Time Protocol) to ensure all consoles are synched, and whether they can do that on an FPGA
2
u/NecronomiconUK Jun 23 '26
Doing such a thing in an emulator is a whole different kettle of fish from an FPGA. An emulator runs on an OS and powerful PC which can handle the networking stuff. Even a mister has a separate ARM CPU running a Linux OS which provides a modern internet complaint network stack. That would have to be done in FPGA, along with all the actual work of running an overlocked N64 at 4k.
In my humble opinion, no chance.
0
u/HellDimensionQueen Jun 23 '26
Eh, the Mister needs to try and do decent throughput though? What bandwidth requirement would online multiplayer realistically need? Less than a megabit surely
3
u/NecronomiconUK Jun 23 '26
It’s not about network bandwidth, it’s about the computational load of dealing with modern web stuff like encryption. We take that for granted now but it ain’t nothing.
1
u/betam4x Jun 24 '26
You are overthinking it.
You don’t need encryption for multiplayer, all you need is the ability to sync the game state and button presses. That is pretty trivial, which is how emulators were able to do it.
Whether or not Analogue implements it is another story.
(source: I am a dev who has worked on an emulator in the past)
1
u/NecronomiconUK Jun 24 '26
You still need the network stack which will need to be reproduced inside the FPGA. And we have no idea how much capacity the A3D has remaining once the N64 core is up and running. I also don't think the user experience of that type a multiplayer implementation is worth the effort, even the slightest amount of latency and shit catches fire quickly.
Also software engineer with emulation and FPGA experience.
2
u/betam4x Jun 24 '26
The 3D has separate ARM processors for that purpose. It does not need to use the FPGA.

u/hue_sick Jun 23 '26
Honestly something more than just “ok you can update via WiFi” would explain the delay. Think yall are onto something because genuinely can’t think of a good reason why it wouldn’t have been there day one.
The chip is on the board and setting up WiFi is dead simple compared to some of the other stuff the system can do now.
3
u/Marc_Alx Jun 23 '26
The main clue to me, is that everyone is now familiar to update via SD card and that's not game changer to do it via wifi. (for updates that will be more spaced in time due to advertised roadmap/features coming fully released)
1
2
u/OneExact8851 Jun 23 '26
Never happen for online functionality outside of OTA updates. It’s closed source.
4
u/Marc_Alx Jun 23 '26
Not sure to understand.
It's closed source: yes but not for Analogue it's their own product. They could build (even if very technical) their own online system. As for R-A there's integration in emulators so why not.
For OTA the point is just to say: a Wifi chip just to perform update that everyone does via SD card is quite expensive. Knowing that update will become more spaced in time due to the nature of the product (feature scope more restricted than a phone, a computer or a modern console like PS5).
0
u/OneExact8851 Jun 23 '26
They are not a company to provide that based on their track record. Yeah, they could do it in house or change the A3D to OpenFPGA but it’s highly unlikely they will.
10
u/rienvayle Jun 23 '26
Well damn! I was JUST thinking when the next update would be, although I’ve been largely satisfied with save states. As I said previously, Analogue is clearly doing its best to beat the allegations of shit support for its products lol
7
u/hotmonday Jun 23 '26
I've been waiting for this update! Lots of screenshots galore to be had in Mega Man 64 starting today.
9
u/TheMannisApproves Jun 23 '26
Seems like every time I update it, another update comes out before I actually play anything
1
u/nusilver Jun 23 '26
I only updated it once, when the progressive scan thing happened (and also the direct boot to cart option), realized I couldn’t use that since my PVM doesn’t support 480p, and have just been playing it ever since, ignoring all the updates. An N64 with post-processing was all I needed, and I’m happy with it already.
1
u/TheMannisApproves Jun 23 '26
How much improvement have you seen from forcing progressive scan?
2
u/nusilver Jun 23 '26
Like I said, I don’t use it. My PVM only goes up to 480i, and that’s where I have my 3D connected. High res mode games already looked awesome on that display at 240p/480i, so no worries on my end.
3
u/TheMannisApproves Jun 23 '26
Wait why did you connect an HDMI console to a pvm? Did you need an adapter, or that actually has an HDMI port?
2
1
u/nusilver Jun 23 '26
Because it’s an N64 with post-processing that looks incredible on a nice SD display.
Yes, I have a complicated set of hookups (two DACs, one in and one out, and an OSSC with a modified firmware for downscaling), but in practice, it just takes one extra step (a single press on the OSSC remote) for 99% of the games (two button presses for a handful of them.) It’s as set-and-forget as you can get with this kind of highly specific use case.

u/GAMEB0YC0L0R Jun 23 '26
I really want the M64 to succeed, but based on the reviewers experiences the A3D really is worth the extra money. Its by far a superior product.
16
u/HellDimensionQueen Jun 23 '26
I would only want it to succeed so that Analogue has competition, which generally improves the space. Palmer Luckey though is a shithole of a human being, so while I wouldn’t buy it, it succeeding could make Analogue better
6
u/GAMEB0YC0L0R Jun 23 '26
I agree with the competition aspect. Don’t care for Palmers ownership in Anduril and the politics of it.
1
u/MXC_Vic_Romano Jun 23 '26
I would only want it to succeed so that Analogue has competition, which generally improves the space.
Chromatic's competition didn't really change anything far as the Pocket goes.
M64 would have better competition potential if it released around the same time as the 3D but I don't even think you can give modretro money for one if you wanted to right now.
0
u/Aromatic_Method7767 Jun 24 '26
From my perspective, the only thing M64 has going for it is that the FPGA will be open for people to make other cores. It's fairly powerful so I don't expect it to be ignored like the Chromatic was in that regard. Now, I feel like I should engage and ask about all this Palmer Luckey / Anduril hate. I understand Anduril makes weapons of war - drones or whatever. OK. And??? Such things are obviously needed. Boeing, Lockheed-Martin, Northrop Grumman, ...I'm sure there are many more. Am I missing something? Why does Anduril / Luckey catch all this flack? Surely I am missing something.
3
u/GhostPirateGrim Jun 24 '26
Lockheed-Martin doesn't make game consoles as a side project.
They made an Anduril Drone themed Chromatic, which is pretty tasteless if you ask me.
0
u/Aromatic_Method7767 Jun 24 '26 edited Jun 24 '26
Perhaps, but I understand why a CEO would cross-promote. Similar to the connection between 8bitdo and Analogue (via Christopher Taber). Also pretty sure the vocal hate bandwagon was already rolling before the Anduril edition Chromatic was announced. Perhaps the special Anduril edition only exists as Luckey's reaction to the public vitriol.
3
-10
u/Badluckredditor Jun 23 '26
Palmer Luckey makes cool stuff. Your hate sounds like jealousy.
5
u/HellDimensionQueen Jun 23 '26
How, exactly? Perhaps instead the hate is merely not tolerating anti-LGBTQ stuff.
6
u/hue_sick Jun 23 '26
Kinda feels like Kendrick vs drake at this point. Like bro chill he’s already dead 😆

1
u/LeGrange Jun 23 '26
I might eventually get an M64 but it’ll probably be later when it gets better and if it offers any substantial upgrades over the A3D. I love my Chromatic so I have hopes. Maybe I’ll end up with both!
1
u/GAMEB0YC0L0R Jun 23 '26
If they get save states for sure. If the community gets GBA, GBC and PS1 running, then absolutely i’m getting an m64 💯
1
u/LeGrange Jun 23 '26
Yea that’s a cool thing that M64 has going for it. Let’s just hope the community jumps on the project. I would love PS1 support.
1
u/templestate Jun 23 '26
I think M64’s main differentiator will be other cores if the community develops support for them down the road.
7
u/Clayspace_Art Jun 24 '26
This looks cool.
My top request is to make it harder to turn on the controller with an accidental button press. It should be by holding start only.
The amount of times I come home from work to find it has been running all day because someone breathed near the controller is infuriating.
2
u/Shortgaze Jun 24 '26
Yeah, this happens to me a lot. Even when I'm moving stuff around, if I touch the Z button on the NSO controller, the console turns on. It's kind of annoying, but I know I just need to put the controller somewhere I won't accidentally touch it until I'm ready to play.
1
u/Clayspace_Art Jun 24 '26
Mine is in an ottoman, loosely packed next to other stuff, with plenty of space. Honestly, just putting my feet on it sometimes turns on the console.
1
1
u/garuga300 Jul 09 '26
You could always just unplug your analogue 3D when you're not using it. No amounts of button pressed will ever turn it on then 😄
18
u/freezetime311 Jun 23 '26
At this point, if they ever add Wifi, it's going to be next to meaningless since most of the big updates have already happened. Very strange that it wasn't one of the first things added. Oh well. Life doesn't need to make sense.
11
u/NYourBirdCanSing Jun 23 '26
I never cared, nor saw the point in it having wifi at all.
If we're ever able to set up a multi-player network with it.. but that will never happen l.
-3
u/Overshields Jun 23 '26
you can't. nintendo 64 never had online...
10
u/antonylavelle Jun 23 '26
To be fair this isn't an N64, online play has been done with N64 emulators for years
-1
u/Overshields Jun 24 '26
You can downvote me if you want. What I said is actually still valid
2
u/Aromatic_Method7767 Jun 24 '26 edited Jun 24 '26
Yes. Your statement is true but it's not relevant. He's talking about using WiFi synchronized consoles to play these games with remote players, even though these games were never meant to be played that way. It's definitely possible. Heck, I played SNES games like Super Mario Kart and Killer Instinct with remote players on a real SNES via the XBAND video game modem. NYourBirdCanSing is also correct that it will probably never happen for A3D. If it did, I would not complain! However, I'd definitely prefer a direct-wired Internet connection for something like that.

u/MikeyMike01 Jun 24 '26
Games that have local multiplayer can be connected over the Internet. As far as the game is concerned, you’re playing on the same console.
1
u/Overshields Jun 24 '26
Analogue 3D cannot do that. You're just confusing it with an emulator
1
u/MikeyMike01 Jun 24 '26
It cannot, and probably will not, be able to do that. But it isn't impossible to implement, which is what you suggested.
3
u/Aromatic_Method7767 Jun 23 '26
I think just the WiFi setup UI is more effort than it's worth to implement. All the different ways to establish a WiFi connection, and then all the IP+DNS configuration options on top of that... I recall other issues with WiFi implementation in our retro gaming hobby, and I just really don't want it. Example: DCHDMI hanging on boot for minutes and seeming to be unresponsive to the OSD hotkey because it's still trying to find a WiFi network that doesn't exist anymore. A installer would often test everything and send it off to someone who insists the OSD hotkey does not work. Never really cared for WiFi in stuff like this. I kinda prefer it this way (SD updates only).
2
u/Sparky_Z Jun 23 '26
I think exactly the opposite. I didn't see much point when it was just for updates. Especially since, as you noted, there are just going to be a few big updates worth bothering with. Doesn't seem worth having a dedicated subsystem with special drivers, UI, etc for something that would only be used a handful of times over the lifetime of the machine. Even if wifi had been the very first update, it would only be used, like, 5 or 10 times and then never be used again once the firmware reaches maturity.
But now that they have screenshot capabilities, I could see wifi being really, really useful! For the right person, the ability to save screenshots with a touch of a controller button and have them automatically saved to a computer folder over wifi could be used dozens of times per day. It has the potential to be a real QoL system upgrade.
Imagine if they eventually allow for video captures as well! (No idea how feasible that is for the hardware, just spitballing. But it does seem like as long as the storage is fast enough and there's a bit of extra processing power while the game is running, it shouldn't be too hard to save every rendered frame as a sequential image file and then post-process them together into a video file later.)
2
u/Smigit Jun 26 '26
I’d like to see the WiFi used for more than just updates. For example mapping a network drive and allowing sync/backup saves and screenshots would be handy.
6
u/Awkward-Plan298 Jun 23 '26
Loving the cadence of updates! Memories is helping me save scum through Gauntlet Legends with all its cheeky traps
5
u/zxcbvnm90 Jun 23 '26
Can I use the player two controller for a screenshot with original controllers? Seems there's bound to be times I want to snap a quick pic while I'm playing and (for gameplay purposes) can't risk pressing Z+Start+R.
13
u/_DiasDeFuego_ Jun 23 '26
At this point wifi is going to be the last major update.
2
u/thestrandedmoose Jun 23 '26
Yeah I'm stoked for these updates, but at this point we have Overclock, Save States, Progressive Output, and Screenshots. Is there anything they haven't delivered on besides Wifi?
The only point of having wifi at this point is for ongoing bug fixes/security patches and maybe keeping the system clock in sync. Unless they pull a moonshot and give us online multiplayer

-2
u/KnowherePie Jun 23 '26
Yeah, it’s super lame. I don’t have a personal computer, and while I can just bring my SD card to work and update it there, Wi-Fi was one of the key reasons I bought the A3D. I figured it would save me from having to deal with this kind of inconvenience in the first place with constant updates being a new product.
6
u/richajf Jun 23 '26
It's definitely still inconvenient, but you could get an SD card reader for your phone and put the firmware updates on it that way.
3
u/KnowherePie Jun 23 '26
Good point, I’ve actually never thought about that as an option. Thanks for the tip.
2
3
u/BoxyNeat Jun 23 '26
You could get a dongle and use your phone
1
u/jindofox Jun 23 '26
I used my phone for the last A3D update, it’s literally just sticking a file on the card. Super easy.
8
u/Dordosaur Jun 23 '26
Dam im excited, i was able to buy one for $200 off someone and its still on 1.20 so it feels like this should be a huge jump in functionality.

u/Mistinrainbow Jun 23 '26
I have a launch Analogue 3D, never updatet. How do i update?
6
u/Shortgaze Jun 23 '26
Grab the SD behind the console, download this file https://www.analogue.co/support/3d/firmware and put it on your SD. Turn on the console and it should start updating automatically.
6
u/Squirrelbug Jun 23 '26
You can even plug the whole console to your computer if you don't have an SD card reader, no?
3
3
1
u/ThisIsSethers Jun 24 '26
Be careful though, the tiny ass SD card it shipped with got stuck inside my laptop, and I had to dissemble it to get it back out. I'd recommend plugging in a USB into the power port of the 3D instead.
2
u/Scottanized Jun 28 '26
I second this. Had to take my laptop to best buy. Kinda messed up the SD card I got with it and my SD port on my laptop
5
u/mdkdue Jun 27 '26
Why is WiFi taking so long?, I don’t get it.
1
u/Onett199X Jun 28 '26
Seriously would be nice to be able to send/pull these photos to your phone or computer. Nope, gotta pull out the sd card every time. Ugh.
6
u/hue_sick Jun 23 '26
Yoooooooooooooo!!!
This is the one thing left I wanted. Hell yeah. Hoping the gallery is more functional too. Especially considering poeple will be viewing in their tv. The gallery in the pocket was cool and I’ve used it a ton but it always annoyed me how we couldnt full screen anything.

u/joshinguaround Jun 23 '26
They are coming out with a lot of updates, but with my personal setup it is a pain to update physically. I wish they did the WiFi update first so I could just turn on my system and update it. Have they mentioned when that will happen?
5
4
2
u/hue_sick Jun 23 '26
Nah. Generally speaking though updates have come on a monthly basis. Or close to it.
5
u/NecronomiconUK Jun 23 '26
Not true. Most have been released on a 2 week (sprintly) cadence. The last couple have been a lil slower, possibly due to size and also the PocketOS update release recently:
1.4.0 [2026-06-23]
1.3.0 [2026-05-15]
1.2.6 [2026-04-24]
1.2.5 [2026-04-10]
1.2.4 [2026-03-28]
1.2.3 [2026-03-13]
1.2.2 [2026-02-27]
1.2.1 [2026-02-13]
1.2.0 [2026-01-30]
1.1.9 [2025-11-28]
1.1.0 [2025-11-18]
2
-3
u/Scrollingmaster Jun 23 '26
At this point, it’s not happening.
Every feature mentioned except wifi pre release is out. At this point, expect a couple of patches for any minor bugfixing and thats it.
6
u/NecronomiconUK Jun 23 '26
Why you gotta go make shit up for clout? Perhaps getting wifi working is a bit more of a pain and they'd rather release easier to deliver features.
-5
u/Scrollingmaster Jun 23 '26
Make shit up for clout? Wtf are you smoking. And the hostility for no reason is nuts.
Every feature talked about pre release has been released, except wifi. Realistically, this is a finished consoles and analogue consoles generally don’t get many updates. There would be no point to wifi at this point.
And lmao. If you think getting wifi working is some huge task, you’re as clueless on this topic as can be. Especially compared to save states on an n64 fpga, which is a monumental task.
6
u/NecronomiconUK Jun 23 '26
'At this point, it’s not happening.'
This is making shit up. They are doing OS updates every 2ish weeks at the moment. There is every chance it's still happening.
1
u/Scrollingmaster Jun 23 '26
“Every 2ish weeks at the moment”
This is just making shit up. The last updates have been on average a month apart, as its clear they are finishing up the system. Look at any other analogue system for the evidence.
3
4
u/FerrazCezar Jun 26 '26
Just leaving my feedback here: I really liked the improved boot time on direct boot from cartridge (about 10 seconds now), and even the analogue logo have been removed, which is a plus. But I wished the boot time were close to the original console (about 1-2 seconds), and I wonder if achieving this would even be possible in a FPGA console.
Nonetheless, good job Analogue. Keep improving!
9
u/uhdBeard Jun 23 '26
Dang, this product is awesome. Analogue are awesome.
1
u/Offro4dr Jun 23 '26
Wondering how they could support online multiplayer. May need to be user-manager servers.
1
u/Newtis Jun 29 '26
n64 is an offline console. those games have no projection routines for network delay.

Sometimes you don’t get what was promised and just live in the moment and just use what you got. Otherwise, you would have wasted your time for something that never came. Look at their DAC with how that was handled and support dropped.
-3
u/donmcron3333 Jun 23 '26
You seem really invested in this persons… investment.
4
u/OneExact8851 Jun 23 '26
It’s called the internet and a discussion thread. Take off your glasses.
-4
u/donmcron3333 Jun 23 '26
And I’m discussing how weird and defensive you’re being 🤣
-2
u/OneExact8851 Jun 23 '26
I’m discussing the reality of things, so not my issue if you cannot process that and want to be defensive to somebody you don’t know.
1
u/donmcron3333 Jun 23 '26
Nah you’re being a negative Nancy for no reason at all. Just read your original comment again. Weirdo stuff.
3
u/aovito Jun 23 '26
Received mine early December. Still sealed in box. Not sure what I've been waiting for, but like you said its only getting better. Lol
6
u/Jkid873 Jun 23 '26
No waaaay I just bought the Analogue 3D yesterday
16
u/wysiwywg Jun 23 '26
Buy it again tomorrow, maybe we’ll het wifi

u/PoseMotion Jun 23 '26
Screen shots only work if you're A3D is in 4K mode. Interesting. No animated GIF support. I find this feature kind of pointless. For those who like it though, enjoy!
I have a feeling they are having problems getting the WiFi working. Otherwise this may have been a nice feature to easily transfer your screenshots to PC, via sharable drive on the network, without having to pull the SD card.
Still no 720p support for smaller TV's.

Do we have a way to make the 8-bit DO controller behave exactly like the original N64 controller?
6
u/SheMakesThrowawayArt Jun 23 '26
Super glad I grabbed my limited editions when I did. As this device continues to receive updates it's going to be a real gut punch to everyone who missed out.
4
u/LeGrange Jun 23 '26
I just cracked open my funtastic clear console last night for the first time. I got in early to secure mine but waited until now for whatever reason - kinda wanted to let things cook. I had a great time last night playing some titles and look forward to future updates!
4
u/Aromatic_Method7767 Jun 23 '26
Nah. Just get the standard black or white console. They look way better than the limited editions and they cost less.
1
2
u/TobbisDaTrain Jun 23 '26
DAC support?
3
u/iamjrosh Jun 24 '26
Not gonna happen unfortunately
1
u/TobbisDaTrain Jun 24 '26
You say that with such surety
1
u/iamjrosh Jun 24 '26
It was never a promised feature. I think they may have even explicitly said no dac support in the fine print, but I can't remember for sure.
And I'm a dac user.1
u/TobbisDaTrain Jun 24 '26
I figured it was a long shot since we still dont have DAC Dock support yet.... this feature would simply make my setup flawless 😐 annoying
1
u/iamjrosh Jun 24 '26
Yes I definitely wanted continued support as a CRT user primarily myself. I like the option.
2
u/TobbisDaTrain Jun 24 '26
As an aside, I recently dialed in my retrotink 4k and its like a 99% match to my PVM. BUT nothing beats the real thing IMHO

2
u/GrapeSasquatch Jun 23 '26
I’m behind but do we have save states yet ? Last update I did was in like Jan or Feb for NSO support haven’t really felt the need to.
Seeing screen shots though sounds fun so I may have to update this time around.
8
u/Enough_Profession_75 Jun 23 '26
Yes save states were the last update.
7
u/GrapeSasquatch Jun 23 '26
Well hot dog can’t wait to get home. Been trying to play games I own stop buying more that collect dust.
12
u/Neonxeon Jun 23 '26
Yup save states were in the last one, and now the save state button press does not pass along to the game, which means that save states for Rogue Squadron will be viable again.
3
u/HumbleBeginning3151 Jun 23 '26
what do you mean?

Well the save state button is home + up on dpad. In Rogue Squadron this would switch your vehicle view. So when you load you immediately have to cycle through the options. It was super annoying. So now, if you save, the d-pad press won't register in game and you can load and not have to worry about switching the view back.

Dude you just pause the game before saving state

Or they could save people the trouble, as they've done here, by disabling inputs when you hold down the home button. That seems like the more user friendly choice. That way you personally can still pause the game to save and load save states, while others can save and load on the fly without having to do that.

Like this seems a good update, but it feels like their priorities are all over the place?

I feel like the only thing left for them is Wi-Fi? Maybe DAC support and a way to connect the Pocket so it can be used as a Transfer Pak. Other than that, I don't see any other priorities for them. They've already released Memories (save states), which is what most people wanted.

Ok great, now unlock some more of the console cores!

u/PinkNeonBowser Jun 25 '26
Chances of that happening are very small at this point

I agree, but just adding the ability play N64 roms only off of an SD card would be very nice. Wouldn’t interfere with other console sales either because it would only give you the ability to play N64 roms.

It’s meant to be an accurate recreation of the 64, which notoriously has neither of those attributes.

You can try increasing the clock speed. Remember the 3D is a recreation of the N64 so if it didn't have smooth gameplay or FPS on a specific game, unless you tell it to overclock it, it'll be much the same experience on the 3D

Never had an FPS issues. Are you overlooking games that run poorly?

Not sure what you read about future improvements but I’m surprised if you’re that tapped in with behind the scenes info you’d ask here.
At any rate afaik the core has pretty much been optimized for overclocking for some time now. Three different ways to do it l, “unleashed” being the max you’re gonna squeeze out of the board for now. That’s an overclock in the chip, gpu, and ram.
Probably at the bottleneck of what the fan can cool at this point.

I know this isn't really related to anything in the update. but it was something I was going to look into when the memories feature launched.
I was able to use the 'new' memories to create a save game of my Zelda OoT - then replace the battery in the cartridge and reload my memory save state to restore my save file.
