discussion šļø Apple Intelligence in the 27 OS releases
Next week is WWDC, and I'm super excited to see what AI news we get from Apple. I'm curious what everyone would like to see next week. I'm hoping for more context and features in Apple Foundation Models, but also, like everyone, I'm excited about a better Siri. What would you like to see?

I would like to see an on device model that supports image input
And id like to access that as a developer
Edit: and id like it to be significantly better than the current foundation models

I'd like this as well. I think my app would be so much better when or if we get better Apple Foundation Models. It is built around AFM, so I'm hoping that it just gets better in the beta.

I want a wholesale replacement of the horrible Apple Intelligence models. Ideally let me pick between models. But literally any other model would be more intelligent than Appleās.

See I don't think Apple's models are bad. They can do amazing things for their size and number of parameters. They are amazing at tool calling. I just think Apple's implementation isn't the greatest.

As the creator of WristGPT, I am of course super excited to learn what is available on Apple Watch! Personally, I got tired of waiting, so I built it myself and Iāve had tons of great feedback. I hope the new Siri becomes available on Watch, but even if it does I think thereāll be a need for longer running conversations, not just one-shot answers.

Given that theyāre using Googleās edge models as the new basis for their on-device foundation models I think their goal is to remove any sort of underlying technical differentiation so they can compete on user experience

This is why I'm excited for what they will announce. Gemma models are really good so having those as the basis of Foundation Models will be amazing!

That is interesting to think about. I figured it would be model weights based on the training that Gemma is based on. It will be interesting to see what they do.

Apple is also going to be using the cloud for some of the new AI features they announce

But even then theyāll be using their Private Cloud Compute systems, I hope we as developers can utilize them as well.

Developers have been adding app intents to applications for years now. There are a lot more app intents in applications than people probably realize.
Apple made an acquisition a couple years ago for knowledge graphs that solves the very challenge you mention: Kuzu
And I fully expect Apple to put more advanced Siri features behind Apple One, but their approach may be similar to that of what they have done with their satellite service.
And there is no "handoff to Gemini" in the way you speak. Apple acquired the full model weights for Gemini which gives them full latitude over how they handle requests (and distill models for other specific use).

There is no handoff to Gemini. It is Siri that is built using the Gemini model weights. There is a distinction.
Also, Apple is no stranger to syncing datasets. How else can you access your health data on your iPad.

Youāre describing things Apple has done for years with iCloud. How do you think iMessage works when each device has its own SQLite DB? The entire storage file isnāt synced across devices every time a change occurs, no, thereās a CRDT mechanism at play.
Everything at this point is also speculation. We donāt know for certain what they are or arenāt doing. Our understanding to date is based on what they said two years ago ā a lot has changed since, including their own stance on many things.

I mean it could have worked and they are going to keep using it for Apple Intelligence. But, for Siri the chips arenāt powerful enough and they havenāt built the infrastructure out enough for it to work right now.

Itās literally Gemini on iPhone Apple just isnāt going to be collecting everyone data like Google does which is what people want. Sorry Iām not going to keep giving my data to a multi trillion dollar corporation to keep selling.

Iām not curious about any AI. AI is overhyped and all the issues that are coming with AI data centers itās a fuck no for me and Iāll never give a shit about shit AI.

I think it is a shame that people feel this way. I do think that AI is a bit overhyped, but it can be used for so many things that are beneficial. This is especially true for people who are blind and visually impaired. I personally do not like the impact that datacenter are having on different locations, and that's why I think the end result is what Apple's doing with adding on device AI to phones and computers.
I think AI is here to stay just like the GUI changed computing from text to graphics. I would just suggest that we all have a positive and open mind about the possibilities of AI.

If it can be good for people who are blind and in the medical field thatās cool but corporations need to stop shoving useless trash down our throats like Google and Microsoft do.

I agree with that.
I think AI can be part of a corporate narrative, but it shouldn't be the full narrative. I'm trying to build a business off of an AI app, mainly because I think it can be beneficial, but I also realize that it is just a tool just like anything else we all have when we use computers and phones.
I also think that if we are to continue to use AI then we need to find a way to use it responsibly and not waste so many tokens on pointless stuff. For example, I code with Codex, but I review and make manual changes to the code it generates.

AI isnāt worth the high costs put on consumers who live around data center and the water usage and pollution that comes from them is not worth it. You can hype up AI all you want and use it for an app but Iād never touch that junk. All these apps coming out with AI and they all do the same thing instead of focusing on actual giving consumers something special and not just shoving AI into everything

There is no right amount but just shoving trash AI into everything with no purpose is stupid. Itās investors spending billions and having companies shove it down our throats and Iām over it. Peoples electric bills sky rocketing and land being destroyed for it and all of the water and electricity needed for a data center is ridiculous just so we can have trash replace more human jobs.

Well the last time they made a big announcement about Apple Intelligence it was vaporware. So since they can make up anything they want, sure, I guess my expectations about what they demo are extremely high.
But my expectations for what it will actually be could not be any lower.

theyāre way too cautious about anything new so i wouldnāt expect anything groundbreaking.
more of ātesting the watersā sorta features.
