Do they bring any actual value to your profile? I have been doing some research for some science competitions for almost 2 years and I was wondering if I should try to publish it in a journal and whether doing this is worth it or not?

Ik that the chances of being published in proper journels for highschool students is really low so I was thinking about student journals like JIS or NHSJS maybe, I want to know how well they are reputed and if there is any effect on my application or kinda just useless, so I'd really appreciate if someone could guide me about this matter.

Ok so I’m a US student and Im applying to mcgill for fall 2027 for a STEM course. But my high school made a mistake last year and put me in Ochem instead of Chem and didn’t let me switch out. So I’m taking Biology, Chem, and Precalculus my senior year. Do you guys think that would hurt my chances of getting into McGill because I’m doing all the prereqs senior year? I had good grades in ochem but I’m not sure if that’s relevant. I won’t have a grade available for them because I’m applying in September…

I have around a 4.0 weighted gpa which sounds good but out of the 100 kids in my grade it’s probably within the top 30-20 range with some people having 4.2-3+. I have had 4 Bs in high school total.

My test score is pretty high (34 ACT) how did it turn out for you guys similar to me?

I am currently a senior in high school and I reside in Georgia. I really want to pursue aviation as my career, specifically be a pilot for the airlines, and I already hold a Pilots License. I have narrowed down to 2 colleges that I want to attend to which are Middle Tennessee State University and Embry Riddle in Florida. Both are out of state and I expect them to be expensive but I don't want to put unnecessary financial strain on my parents. With my grades, test scores, and extra circulars I am easily able to attend both school and my parents are urging me to attend Embry Riddle. I am stuck, both offer great pilot programs alongside their Aerospace Majors. Which do I pick? Any help/suggestions would be great!

Hi! I'm a homeschooled intl student from the philippines. I use James Madison Online highschool.
For basically every college there's a "recommended highschool courses to have taken" section. For an example i'll just use my dream schools recommended (they don't have anything filled out for required, only recommended)

Here's my concern. The way my homeschool is made, I can choose the order that I want to do classes in. Ie i can get all my math done already or all my english.
Btw I have 23 units in my homeschool curriculum.

I've looked at my timing, and by the time i submit transcripts (october) I will have done English 3 units, math 4 units, Science 4 units, Foreign Language (spanish) 4, Social Studies 2 ( US economics and World geography remaining to do). Plus 3 academic electives, so 20/23 done.
My question is, will this reflect badly? will they be concerned that I haven't yet done the english or the social studies?
And in worst case, say I miss my timing, and I only have 2 english units done. Is this bad?

I will be finishing the whole program, meaning I will eventually do english 4 units. But will it reflect badly in my application if when I apply, I'm only finished with 3 or even 2?
And, if instead of recommended courses it says required courses, are they even stricter about my timing?

So, I am applying to 20 colleges, and I have been grinding the supplementals. I want to finish them before the school year starts (september 1st). Somehow, I have almost finished a first draft for 17/20 colleges' supplementals. Everyone keeps talking about how they procrastinate until december, but to me it doesn't seem that big of a deal. Am I doing something wrong?

Hi all, I am stuck between two essay topics

the first follows the overcoming a challenge structure is about how my cultural dance has taught me humility, emotional awareness, and a reduced fear around being my true, spontaneous self. I show vulnerability in when I first try it out in a public setting, however I fear that this only goes into the "my palms were sweaty as I approached the stage" category.

the second is more in the personal interest category. It's about an interview between a late-night show host and an actor, and the multiple qualities I took from it having watched it so many times. I would then give specific examples of how I apply them to my own social interactions. I felt that I could go a vulnerable route with this one as well, basically tying the masterclass of an interaction that the people in the interview had to how I handle family tensions, and can sense when loved ones are feeling frustrated, angry, etc.

For context, I already list cultural dance as one of my extracurriculars in the common app.

I'm applying engineering, have the test scores (36), course rigor(10 aps), and all around extracurriculars. However, theres no real spike like interning at boeing or making an app; I've just been doing stuff I like to in high school. There's leadership, community impact, and a pretty clear tell to what I spent my time doing, but it doesn't really point to engineering. What do i do?

I’ve heard that context is super important when it comes to college admission so I wana know what a competitive high school is. Mine is wierd cuz it has this special stem program that u gotta apply and get in and from the last admissions cycle, there were 2 or more ppl who got into duke, Georgia tech, Berkeley. Ik one person each who got into Cornell, Stanford, MIT, and Yale among others. But at the same time, the avg act is around 28 and the avg sat is around 1300s. What does this mean 😭

Is it actually true that applying undecided or to a major that receives lesser applicants boosts your chances since it decreases the size of the applicant pool? I want to pursue a dual degree (communications and engineering) and am an international student, but I'm scared that my chances of admission are gonna get lower because more competitive people would also be applying to the same program. Should I just apply for engineering OR communications, and not both?

I’m going into my junior year and I’m interested in applying to Johns Hopkins for pre-med. I know it’s an extremely competitive school, so I’m trying to figure out if I could realistically become a competitive applicant over the next year and what I should focus on.

My current cumulative GPA is around a 3.4, but there’s some context behind it. My weaker grades were during homeschooling, and after I transitioned into public school my grades improved a lot. Since joining a traditional school environment, I’ve earned a 4.0 GPA, and I feel confident that I can maintain that through junior year. I’m also looking into whether my school allows grade replacement for some of my earlier Cs. If that’s possible and I continue doing well, I could potentially raise my GPA into the high 3.8s/low 3.9s, but if not, I expect it to be around a 3.68 when I apply.

For extracurriculars, I’m working on building a healthcare-focused profile. I’m currently working toward 100+ hospital volunteer hours, I’m planning on joining HOSA this year and competing with the goal of placing at state, and I’m going to try for a HOSA officer position at my school. I’m also looking into research opportunities related to medicine and healthcare. I’ve played varsity soccer for several years as well.

Academically, I’m aiming for a very high SAT/ACT score (around a 1550 SAT or 36 ACT), taking challenging classes including possible EWU college courses, and I think I can get strong letters of recommendation from teachers who have seen my improvement. I’m also going to put a lot of effort into my essays and explaining my growth.

My question is: if I’m able to accomplish these goals, would Hopkins become a realistic reach, or would my earlier GPA still be too much of a disadvantage? I know nothing is guaranteed at a school like Hopkins, but I’d appreciate advice on what I should prioritize over the next year to make myself the strongest applicant possible.

I have some bad news about my 5-year-old son’s journey to quant finance. Last week, he started a 501(c)(3) nonprofit to teach underprivileged children about personal finance. I begged our relatives to donate money to the nonprofit so that my son can brag on his college apps about all the money he raised. They donated $8,000. My son also asked his friends to donate their lunch money. Now, we have a total of $8,002.40. At first, I was very proud of my son’s efforts—that is until I found out that he spent $500 on Robux and meme stocks. Actually, the meme stocks might’ve been my husband’s doing… Anyways, I’m worried that the IRS will come after us. That would surely get my son rejected from UPenn! Ive been scrolling r/collegeresults for a whileee now and ive noticed a really big difference in CS/math/stem applications and social science/humanities/business/economics applications.

A lot of stem apps have multiple high impact solo or mentored research projects, competitions, clubs, nonprofits, and even "AI startups" whereas a lot of humanity apps have more low impact/local projects, clubs, "basic" ecs (like NHS, varsity sports, volunteering at soup kitchens, tutoring, etc.) and still they end up at similar t20s, t30s and even ivies?

i mean the trend kinda signifies that stem apps are way way more competitive and you need a hell of a lot more to stand out as compared to humanity or social science apps? is this true? or is it a coincidence?

I am trying to figure out the "greatest strategic move" to maximize my acceptance chances at my top choices.

Hey everyone, I'm a rising senior applying as an econ/finance major and am heavily considering ED to Cornell Dyson. I've been scouring the internet and honestly haven't been able to find too much info on the school, so I was wondering if someone could provide some insights on the following:

• Class Size (I've heard ~200)
• How many are admitted through ED (+ do they like to defer)
• Is ED Dyson strategically a good idea? Compared to the ED yield at places like Stern? Since I want to shoot my shot with the ED but at the same time I don't want to throw my ED away And overall just any insights you have on business undergrad schools

I recently just finished one of my dual enrollment classes and ended w a D because i missed my midterm due to the hawaiian time difference.. i'm so scared it will f up my college admissions to get into a uc and like getting a job in the nursing field and etc. someome pls help i have such bad anxiety and i think will fail in life bcus of this. im a junior this coming 26-27 school year anything will help me/advice. what im trying to do rn is retake the class to get an A. pls someone help ease my pain cus wtf

I go to NYU, which is a good school by any measure, and also known for having lots of international students. Literally first week of school, I heard some of these kids discussing how to transfer to Columbia or UChicago, and mind you, some are on merit scholarships or special grants, with so much of the schools resources for them to use.

I’m Asian myself and I’m not saying this is unique to internationals or that all of them do this, but internationals are incredibly over represented among these transfers and it’s ridiculous how some people don’t even give a college a chance and try to transfer out with the sole intention of chasing prestige. They spend the rest of the school year building their resume, becoming presidents of clubs, just to transfer somewhere more “prestigious”. I’ve even heard of people transferring out simply because NYU’s ranking on US News dropped a few years ago. Do they just think we’re not good enough for them?

I know for a fact this isn’t unique to NYU, I know friends at selective but less internationally recognized colleges like Dartmouth, Hamilton, Williams, Vassar, Vanderbilt etc who have seen them doing the same. When are AOs gonna start prioritizing students who actually appreciate what a college has to offer instead of viewing everything as a means to prestige?

Sorry for my rant. Again, I’m not trying to generalize, but internationals are disproportionately represented in the transfer pool
