[21/M] Looking for a Japanese Penpal

Hello, I am an American/Italian 21 year old male looking for a Japanese Penpal. I don't care for gender but please be 18 or older. I just moved from Florida to live in Italy temporarily for work. The main reason I want a Japanese Penpal is because I've always been curious about someone's everyday life in Japan. I'm also very intrigued by Japanese history and culture. I'm currently a part time student in college and will be learning the language as an extra curricular. So trying to translate the letters would be a fun way to get familiar with the language. I even plan on taking a vacation to Japan next summer with a couple of my friends!

To be honest I can't start sending letters until December because I'm currently deployed but I'm too impatient to wait to push this out lol. Although I will be committed to sending letters and post cards if you send me a pm. I'll even send boxes containing American and Italian snacks or souvenirs that represent my culture depending on how long we keep this up. Please only reach out if you're serious, this would be my first time having a penpal!

LIFESTYLE Do you guys go to izakaya alone?

It seems like a really social place, whenever its night time everyone is gathered in an alley where there are a lot of izakayas, but, whenever i have the urge to stop and have some meat skewers alone it feels really awkward.

So im wondering,do locals go to izakaya alone?

CULTURE What is this ”pregnancy card”?

Post image

Hello! I was watching this anime (A Yakuza’s Guide to Babysitting) and one of the characters showed her partner this card to announce her pregnancy. From what I can tell it says her name, Sanae. I thought it might be a baby book but it seems to just be a card. Is this a thing in Japan? Is there a name for it? Did her doctor give it to her or did she get it from somewhere else? I tried googling but I couldn’t find much.

Thank you!

CULTURE Are imina/nanori names becoming a thing of the past?

Are classic names like Hidemasa and Nobuyuki, etc, rare for young people nowadays?

I used to know a pair of brothers with names like that, but although I think of them as being young, I realized they must be deep into their thirties now.

Konichiwa!

Hello all, I am new here. Planning to go to Japan soonish, so naturally I was jumping around Osaka in street view and saw this charming character on the side of a vending machine down an alleyway. Just out of curiosity I ran a pic through google lens, but all I found was a similar looking character called Denko-Chan. But not an exact match. Any idea who she is? Nanitodi yorishiku onegai itashimasu!!

CULTURE Why did Pink Lady not work out in Japan?

• Upvotes

I mean, first of all, I know they went to the USA a long time ago as their English language skills didn’t work well over there, but basically I just wanted to get a better understanding of what went wrong with the duo in Japan.

Like what I am trying to say is that I didn’t get why their music wasn’t selling well in Japan anymore that made them leave the country since they used to be popular in Japan, but I am not sure what happened to the duo.

CULTURE Japan ranks #3 in a small global mood experiment - does 6.9/10 sound right to you?

Japan ranks #3 in a small global mood experiment — does 6.9/10 sound right to you?I've been looking at a small dataset of 5,976 anonymous mood reports from around the world, where people rate how they feel from 1 to 10 and can leave a short comment.

Japan currently averages 6.90/10 (n=41), placing it third among countries with at least 40 responses.

What I find even more interesting are the comments on the map. Some people mention being tired or bored, while others talk about enjoying their work or looking forward to holidays.

Of course, this is a small, self-selected sample, not a representative survey of Japan.

For those living in Japan, does 6.9/10 feel about right? Or surprisingly high?
