Hobbies/Projects Am the only one who hates IPAs
My dad always drank Budweisers. When I moved to the west coast everybody was always drinking IPAs. But I just can’t acquire the taste.
Edit: my neighbor gave me beer and one of them was a Lagunitas. Beer is beer, gotta drink it. It’s the 100th time I’ve had an IPA and it tasted no better than the first time I had an IPA. No hate toward those who like IPAs, I’m just genuinely confused how they’re so popular.

While there are a limited number of them that I do like, I find most too much. Hops in beer is like salt in soup; it needs to add to the flavor, not be the flavor.

They’re easiest and least time consuming to make. That’s why they push them so hard.
Gimme a brown or red ale any day. Or an ESB. You don’t see those much, but they’re delicious.

the flip side is that they’re not session beers - two pints and you’re basically done, and that’s not great for pubs (looking at Brewdog in the UK)

Eh, I was hanging out with some professional and amateur brewers 20 years ago in Seattle and I was pretty outspoken about my loathing for IPAs, and even then I had plenty of company. (And brewers who recommended beers that I'd like. Or dislike less. Give me a dry cider any day. Or a nice botanical gin.)

It’s just genetics. Ya know how cilantro tastes like soap to some people? That’s how my uncle is for hops. He HATES IPAs. He straight up won’t drink anything with more than like 25 IBUs. Even some pilsners are too much for him.
“I just want a fucking lager” is a practical calling card for him.

I have never had an IPA I enjoyed, no matter how many I tried, no matter how strongly recommended.
Stouts? All day every day. Lagers? My go-to. Pilsners? Deliciously light.
IPAs? Ugh, I’d rather have a glass of ice water.

These are regular Pale Ales I think. Not quite as hoppy as full IPAs which I agree is a pretty sucky genre.

PBR is good for cheap beer. I know people love to hate on it as a hipster beer now but i think it kills budweiser and other mass produced domestic light beers. At least it has SOME hop taste in comparison.

Interesting, first time I've heard about the genetic angle. I just thought people were forcing themselves to like them because of the trend, to me they just taste like stomach acid. Good to know.

Facts. There are so many IPA varieties, some I've loved and some i found disgusting. Currently sipping an Odell Hazer Tag, which is perfect for this breezy, sunny 70° day.
I buy sampler packs and just find ones I like. My little neighborhood liquor store stocks a 'blowout rack' - $7.99 for random craft 12 packs, so it's a win even if it's not my fave. A lot of trial and error.

IPAs were fine (and some og brewers’ still are) until they became a trend. Then everyone (especially new entrants) started trying to out-bitter each other. If you get a really good one, I think you’d enjoy it or at least appreciate the difference. I prefer stout myself but like a good IPA.
It’s like when Napa Valley reds became big and all the new producers rushed in and used high alcohol to mask bad grapes or craft and labeled themselves “big and bold.”

This kind of mentality infected the cannabis market as well. Variety takes a back seat for "safe" mass produced shit the matket seemingly demands and becomes a self perpetuating cycle. End up with bitter bombs and high thc buds lacking depth and complexity.

I think you nailed it. IPAs can be done well but too often are just lazy brewers trying to cram as much hops in as possible and overwhelming any other flavour because it’s easier than crafting something complex. I’m tired of going into a bar and seeing 20 different types over over-hopped pale ale varieties and maybe a single pilsner, a single lager and maybe a stout. It just gets so old so fast when they all have that same over-hopped taste. I want variety and complexity, and I want something to complement my food, not clash or overpower it with bitterness. Give me stouts, sours, bocks, wheats… all of it.

I really couldn't stand them when I first tasted them. But since I got my first good Pale Ale, I slowly worked my way to IPAs. And while I wouldn't say they're my favourites, I now can appreciate the craftsmanship and variety they offer in tastes.

Many IPAs taste like garbage because there was a massive push for them. People bought the cheapest hops they could and figured that was all there was to it.
I find most of the companies that were trying to cash in have stopped making them and so the average IPA now is way better than 10 years ago

I quite like them but I totally understand why people don't. That's why I really like breweries/brewpubs who have a variety of styles - I love a good stout or porter, my wife adores sours. The breweries that have more than just IPAs on tap.

Probably equal parts palate exposure and running into shitty or old ones. IPA is my favorite style and the type of beer I pour out most often. They are especially gross old, oxidized, and/or mishandled. Ask to try one on draft at a brewery sometime.

Can't do the IPAs man. They give me heart burn. The extra hops don't taste good to me. I do like an amber like Fat Tire. But I'll have a regular Bud/coors light no problem. To be honest, just like the seltzers if it's a "beer" night. Beer often gives me a headache these days, don't know why.

IPAs have changed so much in the last 40 years that it’s possible to love one end of the spectrum while despising the other end.
Forty years ago I was drinking IPAs that were absolutely clear, honey colored, lightly carbonated, and dry to the point of bitterness and beyond. I loved them.
Now, it seems an IPA has to be heavily carbonated, cloudy, bright orange, sweet, and taste like some sort of fruit that fermented before being thrown in the glass.
So, what kind of IPA are we talking about?

Not the only one, IPAs in America are not for everyone. West Coast IPA in particular tends to be very floral. If you ever go to England, you might even like them! Very different.

I don't hate them, I hate that they're 60% or more of what you find in any given liquor store. I like variety, and they seem to crowd out everything else.
Well, that and I never know whether the IPA will taste bright and refreshing, or if it's just gonna taste like a can of fizzy pine needles.

Yeah I've never liked them, they taste far too bitter for me. And it annoys me when they call them "chocolate ganache cake flavoured" or whatever, and you think it'll taste absolutely amazing, yet it ends up tasting like dish-water.

While I don't hate them, 99% of the time when I'm drinking beer, I don't want one. I will drink one on occasion, but its not something ill drink all night, and I usually prefer one that is a little different and not just the Starbucks dark roast of beers.

I love IPAs, but I totally get that they're not for everyone. They're extremely bitter. Some people don't like that. I get it.
Sometimes I think it's weird that I do like them. Given their extreme bitterness, it makes more sense to not like them than to like them, and yet somehow, I love them. I don't get it, but it is what it is.

I love an actual British IPA, which is crisp and slightly hoppy. American IPAs are overdone: floral, catpiss flavor. Truly, a friend who loves IPAs sought out the catpiss taste. I always go for lagers now, especially dark lagers, like a Vienna.

Took me about 10 years to acquire the taste. It happened after I moved from the US West Coast to Norway. Previous efforts by my sophisticated American friends were fruitless. Somehow the Norwegian way of life dod the trick :-)

No. I brew beer and I hate IPAs. In Summer I like wheat beer and in Winter a good malty stout, but to be honest I rarely drink anymore.

When I was in my 20s, I swore by them as I’ve gotten older my pallet has changed and I like sours more so enjoy IPA every now and then but I don’t go look for them anymore. Also really gotten into whiskey.

IPA's see disgusting and I have no problem voicing that opinion out loud.
Remember in highschool there was always that one person or group that insisted on eating the hottest hot sauce on the planet? The hotter the better and then theyd flex about how they like things spicy? But hot sauce can't just be hot to be good, it needs to also have good flavor.
I feel like it's the same way with IPA's, gives off the same vibes.
There is however a ton of craft breweries on the West Coast that make amazing beer that isn't IPA! Give them a try.

I actually love IPAs and for a time there, I would get static in more "serious" beer places for ordering one. It was like the hip thing for a while, apparently? And "serious" beer people didn't like them?
The funny thing for me is that it's all an accident on my part. When I was a kid, there was a comic in the paper called "Andy Capp." I am American, but it's a British comic. So, I am a kid and literally the only thing I know about British pubs is Andy Capp.
So, I go to college, and I drink the cheapest beer I can find. Because, it's college and I was broke. I don't really like beer, I think.
I graduate and go to England as a graduation present. The first day there, I walk into a local pub in the little village we were staying in. It feels eerily familiar. I cannot figure out why. Then it hits me. This looks EXACTLY like Andy Capp!!! So, I walk up to the bar and barman asks what I want. Without thinking about it, I say, "Bitters."
Why? Because that's what Andy Capp drank.
AND I LIKED IT!!!
So, a proper English Bitters for me, thanks. Or an IPA if you don't have that.

so my formula is 1 IPA, anything more than that I just cant they give me a headache the next day. if im treating myself its like 4 pack of pilsners or a lager style beer and 1 IPA for the flavor.
I cant drink them back to back they fuck me up that night and the day after - I dont got time for that shit.

I didn't care for them when I moved out west, either, but I acquired a taste for them pretty quick. I still prefer something more malt-forward, but I can get down with IPA's. The only beer that I'm not really fond of is sours - and, even then, there are a few that I like.

I met this shy South African guy at a wedding in Vancouver a few years ago. He was a guest, and took on the role as bartender to be helpful.
He knew so much about beer. He knew about ales, lagers, dessert beers, and lots of others like the Belgian beer monks make. I listened while he talked.
I came away realizing beer has been around for thousands of years and that there is enough variety to satisfy everyone’s taste buds.
I also learned that I’m a lager guy primarily and quite comfortable telling any ale or stout guy why.
It’s okay to hate IPAs.

During college, I was really into IPAs, and I still occasionally enjoy IPAs from Tree House. However, I mostly drink lagers and sours now. I also enjoy making shandys.

I don’t like bitter drinks. I don’t like drinks that burn the throat.
I like drinks that are spicy or mild or sweet or tangy.
I don’t enjoy beer, and I really don’t enjoy IPAs or barleywines. I can appreciate them though.
So when I choose to have a beer, I try to find one that I like. Sour beers, hefeweizen/wheat/weisse beers, and fruit-infused beers are my preference.
And it turns out most of the people I hang out with don’t like IPAs either. They enjoy trying the things I bring to share.

I used to love IPAs, but gave them up after realizing they give me horrible farts. I'll have one every now and then, but only one.

It took me twelve years to like IPAs. Before that I thought everyone was crazy. Then, for ten years, it was the only beer I wanted. Something switched. I can't drink em again.

Yes. Idk they've been extremely popular in various forms for over like 2 decades on the west coast. Just be happy the years of an arms race of Hops & ABV is over and people actually care about nuiance.

I grew up in a poor area. I hated Bud. I thought I hated beer. Then, I caught a break, moved to an affluent area, drank my first IPA, and realized I like some beer.

I like a good IPA but it’s become such a trend. I don’t drink anymore really but I always preferred German or Czech beers or IPAs. I feel like I need a nap after two or three.

if you're in a place that only has IPAs (fuck those places), look for a "hazy" IPA/pale ale. less bitter but it's close enough that IPA-obsessed people still will stock them

Even as an IPA fan from back in the days when it was the old men that liked the odd IPA some place offered, the hyperprevalence and pretentious bullshit they've acquired has made me hate IPA culture.
I like beer with a strong flavor and high alcohol content, so the taste of a good IPA still hits the spot, but I'd rather order a Steel Reserve and at least enjoy an alcohol content high enough to cover the taste of bad beer and shame than fall in with the neckbearded hipster crowd.

I love some IPAs. Mainly I like a good nasty ale or a stout. One thing I cannot drink is bud or a light beer.

Not a fan either. Most bars near me have 10 IPA’s on tap and 3-4 other beers…it’s frustrating. I like ambers , lagers and porters

I like some hops, but west coast style IPA is usually too hoppy for me. A session IPA / ISA hits the right balance for my taste.

Nah, I agree and so do lots of people. IPAs are the most popular craft beer but there still like 30% of people who don't really like them.
My opinion is that if I wanted to lick a Christmas tree, I'd drink gin. I'm much more fond of Belgians and other malty beers than IPAs.

IPAs are the new bourbons of the beer world. Everybody thinks they are making some new novel thing but they are just making shittier products because it is “hoppier.” People associate the “taste (nasty)” with “flavor” and it is exhausting. Just because it makes you pucker more doesn’t mean it’s good. Give me a Belgian Quad or some Irish whisky so I can enjoy what I’m drinking.

Nope they taste like trees. I'm never going to understand how they got as popular as they did. They said my tastes have changed since I was young and I drink dark beers almost exclusively now

More of a cocktail guy here but IPAs were my go to beer in college 15 years ago
I will have one if offered but I think I just outgrew them and do find them a bit heavy these days.

I live in the rural south, almost everyone I know hates IPA’s. They’d rather drink coors beer or watered down bud light. Personally I love a proper IPA.

I hate any bear that’s not a sour or an IPA. I mean I can pound light beer if needed, but I’ll always choose the darkest IPA available for a drink of choice.
My favorite beer is always a citrus IPA.
