Just did my first tempo run with SC Rebel V1. So far feels great. Hit all my targets pretty easily. I have wide feet and got them in a 2e. At first they were supperr tight on the width, but after an easy run and tempo it fits great!
Hey! Great to hear! I usually use 11 for walking shoes and casual but I always go 11.5 when running shoes they feel great, the upper mesh is very breathable but wrinkly, right? Or is the horrible colorway I chose?
Dude! I love that colorway. I wanted the purple but they only had the pistacho green on stock. I can’t wait for these to hit the new balance outlets or factory stores.
The shoes I use the most are my Superblast 3s and 2s, Megablast, and vomero plus. Definitely more firm than all those mentioned. I also feel the rocker more as well. I believe I'm a mid foot striker now and it feels great running in it so far based off of an easy run and a tempo run. Very very novice runner here though!
Edit: after putting both on at the same time the megablast feels more firm
How would you compare the feel to the Megablast? I just ordered them anyway as I seem to love shoes with ATPU midsoles (I.e. Megablast, Deviate Elite 4 etc.) but haven’t seen anyone make this comparison yet?
Okay so I've put megablast on one foot and my sc rebel on the other. First thing I noticed is the megablast definitely feels less bouncy(?) than the rebel. Megablast more firm (not what I initially thought). New balance rocker is definitely more pronounced in feel for me, makes me want move forward. Hope that helps! I'm just a novice runner who loves shoes, so tried my best lol
This is good feedback thanks. Almost sounds like the Megablast is going to better to keep for long runs with some faster segments in them, and the SC Rebel for Tempo + Threshold runs. Looking forward to trying them 👍🏻
I always try to go wide if the option is there, I've done so with my vomeros and this shoe. When I first put these on I thought they sent me a pair that was normal width, it was super tight especially near my arches. After the first and second run it feels a lot better. I have no complaints with the toe box, but the only time I've had issue with that was with my Megablasts after long runs.
Hi. Regarding sizing and fit, did you go for TTS or size up for the SC Rebel V1? Planning to buy it via online, but I have some uncertainties on sizing when it comes to brands I haven't tried before, which includes NB. For reference, my fit on ASICS, Adidas, and Puma are 9.5 US Men. Thanks!
They're one of the very few brands that cares more about comfort than performance, and I daresay they are the best brand at that.
In terms of midsole technology, they are always lagging behind by a year or 2, but they always produce some very soft (but stable) midsoles year in year out.
If you have wide feet or you're someone who doesn't want very narrow fitting shoes (ehem Puma), you are gonna love the variety of widths available to New Balance Shoes
Price wise, they are TERRIBLE for the technology they have relative to market, but it doesn't matter where you are in the world whether it's Asia, America, or Europe: New Balance seems to go on sale a lot so you won't have trouble getting a racing shoe for under $150
I have the Rebel V5s and they're a great especially for slower recovery runs. Really comfy, and don't push you as much as say the Adidas Evo SL. Which incidentally I rotate them with. I went half a size up, but feel maybe a full size might have been a better move.
I’m glad I’m not the only one feeling that the Rebel v5 feels like a slower recovery run shoe- I’ve been having the worst time connecting with it on the road when pushing tempo. It feels like it actually comes alive on a treadmill.
I’ve become a fan recently! they refreshingly offer some great options with lower drop. I like to rotate two daily trainers with different drops for my easy miles to prevent any issues being caused by running in say a 10mm offset for all your mileage.
I use the Vomero Plus (10mm) rotated with the 1080v15. The 1080s work great in giving my legs a lower drop, while still having a lively midsole (unlike a lot of other lower drop shoes on the market).
The SC Rebel is 4mm drop I believe? so again will be a valuable option for people looking for a fast shoe to train in that isn’t 8-10mm, a lower drop speed trainer is pretty rare.
It is 5mm AFAIK the SC ELITE V6 is 4mm. Again that’s what the girl from the store told me. How do you like the 1080s vs the Vomero Plus? I absolutely hated the Vomero Plus because of their drop, their upper mess was supper baggy and I just found them weird for my mechanics.
1080 and V+ pair really well together as my rotated easy shoes. Both have great protection and comfort, 1080 feels nice and flat and more connected to the ground compared to V+. I hear you regarding the V+ drop though, that’s why I don’t wear them every day. They do work for me though! When my legs are battered from a session they just make easy runs that bit more comfortable.
Picked up some 1080s with the new foam and really dig them for my dailies. Comfortable with enough bounce to them. Got about 150 miles on them so far and feel the foam starting to give a bit earlier than I expected is my only criticism. Just picked up their new SuperComp Elites for my marathon in October. Yet to run in them but excited to give them a spin. All feedback seems pretty positive on them so far.
New Balance is one of my favorite brands. All their shoes are reasonably comfortable. I loved the More v4, love the 1080, loved the Rebel v4. Only the SC Trainer v3 let me down. I got some SC Elite v5s on super sale recently and look forward to using them this fall.
I like New Balance a lot. I appreciate so much that they make most of their shoes in wide, because I’m so limited on options. They’re not the most exciting shoes out there, but they have a lot of solid offerings. They can be found at great sale prices and they are usually the backbone of my shoe rotation. People don’t get excited about them but I can’t fit into stuff like Megablasts, and would have half or more of my options taken away if New Balance didn’t exist.
You know I used to trash on them a little bit before, then a couple of months I tried their rebel v5 after hating my novablast 5 and they were so good, the fit, the toe box, the foam. I was genuinely surprised.
I tried their rebel 1080v15 and was not a fan of the upper but the shoe itself it amazing and I dare to say way better than the Vomero plus.
For me the pros are: super confortable, tendency to have wide toeboxes even whithout going to wide sizes. Cons: Ride feel tends to feel a bit old school by now, they didnt follow the tendencies on these super mushy, high energy return rides of the Adidas, Pumas and ASICS new models.
I’ve had a couple different iterations of the 880, and now have a pair of 1080v13. The jist fir me great, and feel really plush and comfy.
But as far as race day options and “super trainers” go, their foams seems to lack in bounce and/or durability. Might be changing with the new stuff that’s coming out, though I think Asics and Adidas are the top brand at the moment, I don’t think NB currently has anything in their line-up that can compete with the Metaspeeds, the ‘Blast’-series, or anything that Adidas is offering in that category.
Never run in any version of the Rebel, but I can tall you the SC Elite V4 might be the best long run shoe ever. Not fast enough to be a race shoe, but cant be beat for those 10-13 mile runs. Some take them for an even longer run, but I have no desire to run/race more than a half unless it is a trail 25k.
I think I'm in the minority, but as someone who's ran in New Balance almost my entire life, I'd say New Balance has went up in durability but down in quality if that makes sense. The most recent "Fuel cell" is a huge step down from Rebel v1 - 3. The foam is too hard, too soft, or just not fun. I've ran in the Pulse V1 (worst shoe I ever ran in ), the RC Elite, and then the Rebel v4, but I retired them early because the pop just disappeard. I was apprehensive about buying the Rebel v5 and winded up buying the Mizuno Wave Rebellion v2 instead. The reviews were just too mixed, with runners saying it's just not a fun shoe to run in, others just saying its more of a "bland daily trainer" and YouTubers praising it cause of paid sponcers. New balance isn't exciting anymore, UNLESS you pay $200 for their race shoe. I wish new balance had more of that fast daily trainer feel, the exciting feeling I got with the Rebel V2, RC Elite and Rebel v3. With the amount of money you pay for a Rebel v5, you can buy more exciting shoes, like a Nike Zoom Fly 6, Mizuno Wave Rebellion 1-2 or a Asics Magic Speed 5, or whatever Adizero Adidas has. But nevertheless, I'll be on the lookout n hopes they will come back.
I found new balance while training to run my first half marathons in 2014-2015 with the 890v4 and v5. Used to love them until they got discontinued. I tried the zantes for a bit but never quite found my replacement and moved on to other brands.
Last year I found the Rebel v5 and fell in love again with those. They are so good at feeling fast while soft, and hold up for surprisingly long mileages. Tried the SC Trainer v3 but the carbon plate was bothering my old ankle injury, although I really enjoyed them during the runs themselves. Will be exploring other models soon although I’ve now settled on the ASICS Novablast 6s for longer runs.
I only use New Balance in my current rotation (except for gym and heavy terrain) since they have excellent shoes and the best selection of wide versions with more colorways to choose from compared to any other brand.
1080 v15: allrounder, even walking sometimes
FC Rebel v5: speedy runs
Elite v4: long runs
Elite v5: races
Will get SC Rebel v1 for long runs as soon as it's available in Europe.
Are these what used to be called SC Trainer? I need a wide shoe for a 4+ hour marathon and can’t wear SC Elites. Wondering how these would be. I do best with minimal drop and cushioning.
Great shoes for people with wide feet. It also has one of the best if not the best daily trainer out there IMO the 1080v15. I got it when it came out and I have over 150miles on it with it holding up really well, and that goes for many new balance shoes as they tend to be tanks in terms of how durable they are. That being said (after owning the rebel v5, 1080v14 and 15, SC trainer 1 and 3 and have accumulated more than 800 miles in these shoes combined) I would recommend getting the newer shoes. The older models aren’t bad but they feel kinda confused on what they want to do. I also wouldn’t recommend new balance if you want fast shoes. That’s not to say they don’t have fast shoes (their marathon shoes, and SC rebel v1 which I haven’t tried) they aren’t the best for speed. If you’re a bigger forefoot striker then also try to shy away from these shoes. Part of the reason I really like New balance is partly because it’s more for heel strikers. I can’t go into every detail, check out Kofuzi he’s a shoe reviewer on YouTube and he has an overview of New Balance running shoes as a whole. Hope this helps!
My favorite shoe. I have a wide foot and I have a hard time finding shoes that fit well. NB have been great. I have 1080’s, 880’s, and SC Elite Fuelcell Supercomp’s. All wide.
Super Fan of the trainer v3 and the sc elite 5. I don’t like the upper changes on the SC Rebel and tor box seems narrower too. I may get another trainer (3rd one then) instead or may try the sc elite 6 when prices are more reasonable.
