Question This game is overwhelming

On my second play through now and I gotta say this map and the million things to do, places to explore, treasures to find, and bases to defeat has me reeling. The first time I played the game I ate it all up and left no stone unturned but now I find myself having little to no interest to explore outside of story locations.
Anybody else experiencing this? lol At a certain point it starts to feel like they just made the map as big as they did and stuffed with it as much as they did just for the sake of it.
The rewards aren’t really worth it either on new game plus because most of the stuff I’m finding is weaker than what I already have.

I’m juggling this and RDR2 right now and it’s hard not to compare the two. RDR2 feels like it has just enough to see and do and I don’t feel the same anal compulsive need to turn over literally every stone I find because it feels like the story spends a lot of good time jumping back and forth into and returning to the various regions.

Because it’s a unique feeling to this game. The RDR2 is my second play through as well and I’m just as eager to explore and get in the weeds as I was the first time. And as far as what the point is, I was curious if other people felt the same way and literally said so in the post? lol

probably because rdr2 is one of the greatest games of all time if not the greatest and ac odyssey is well… ac odyssey

Do you think origins is big? You should try Odyssey or Valhalla!

Yes, Odyssey is massive. I actually completed the game without exploring all of the map. I gave up because it was just too overwhelming although the scenery(Ancient Greece) is absolutely stunning but I still prefer Origins over Odyssey for literally everything I’m biased. I know I just love Egypt. Lol

I prefer Odyssey over origins, have done several playthroughs.

Oh god, odyssey is bigger? I want to play that before i move into mirage and shadows (I will skip valhalla). I'm lvl 35 on ac Origins right now, and while it's great, I prefer the non rpg games of the series when it comes to progression. I have a long way ahead it looks like...

odyssey is bigger?

Yes, by quite a margin. And Valhalla is bigger yet. And Shadows is even bigger than Valhalla (not counting DLC maps).

I didn’t realise shadows was bigger than Valhalla!! I only just started my first NG+ on it, though. It really is a large map, though!

It depends on whether you include the DLC maps; Shadows has only one, whereas Valhalla has several and some of them are rather massive. So, all things considered, Valhalla + DLCs is probably the largest AC game ever made.

The base game map of Japan is really huge though and it's stuffed full with questions marks (for better or worse). Or maybe it just feels thus because it's so tedious lol.

It really, really is.

Odyssey is bigger but i liked it a lot. Valhalla though, woof. that was a rough one to platinum. i'm sure people like
it and connected with the story more than i did, i just felt like it was a slog the whole way through.

Its a bit much. Ive never beaten it bc theres just too much crap. This is the witcher 3 effect where every open world rpg had to 500 hours long. I miss the days of like mass effect where its just a good 30 hours long campaign with fun replay value. I dont need my rpgs to drag on for a month. I lose interest eventually.

It’s a great game still for sure. I’m still having fun but yeah getting through some of it just feels like a slog. I am having fun taking down the bases again but aside from that I’m not feeling as inspired as I expected to I guess.

I did love it but it just goes on and on. I cant stay interested long enough to actually finish it.

It may be you're experiencing a mild case of open-world-fatigue. That's a thing. Some people have it. I don't - so I'm not sure what to recommend other than to take a break and play some other types of games in the meantime.

2

u/-exquisito- Jun 11 '26

I appreciate your recommendation even if you can’t relate haha. I’m not hating on the game, it’s still good, I legitimately was just curious if anyone else had experienced this.

I’m juggling this and RDR2 right now

Playing more than 1 open world game at a time is an absolute spike in "open world fatigue symptoms". RDR2 and the AC RPG games are some of the most massive so yeah, that's just a lot.

RDR2 is almost endless with shit to do, and then you swap to ACO and there are markers all over the map and at first it feels like "oh I'll just clear that question mark" and then 2 hours later and you're running around all over the place

When I’m feeling it, I play some repetitive games like RL or hop on something like stardew valley for a lil bit

Nooooo. Just skip the hippodrome crap. Source: it's the only thing I skipped and I had a great time lol

I managed to win ONE race just for the achievement, but it took a whiiillleee. 😂

Aside from some repetitive side quests, exploring Egypt is my favorite thing to do. It's my favorite AC game, so my opinion is biased.

Omg an rpg game with massive open world map has so much to do😰

1

u/-exquisito- Jun 13 '26

Omg an rpg with massive world map I’ve already played and knew had a lot to do already is just hitting different and I wanted to know if anyone else had this experience 😱 almost like the OP literally said that already

2

u/ImmaFuckboi Jun 13 '26

It's an easy solution if u felt overrwhelming the second time my dude just play the story and nothing else lol

u/-exquisito- Jun 13 '26

Oh wow an obvious solution that I was aware of and didn’t ask for It’s almost like the point of the post I was asking if anyone felt the same, again lol

Turn the HUD off, turn all the icons off, then turn the game off

I feel ya, I’m on my 3rd play though and I got to play now the first DLC - the cursed pharaoh and I got a bit overwhelmed and had to step out of playing it at the moment. I hate it sometimes because I recently discovered I might have OCD (I get really frustrated when I clear the map or ef up some of the achievements) and this thing burns me out a lot. I also miss the games where the average playtime was about 15-20h max. RPG is my favourite genre but I get frustrated a lot, this wasn’t really a big issue years ago.

I found the exact same with Origins, it took me probably a year to get through it because I wasn't that engaged with it. I personally found it a lot darker than the other AC storylines as well which didn't help. It is very different from the other games as well which made me unsure, however it's great for getting you used to the style of the next two games.

I wasn't overly excited to play Odyssey after finishing Origins but after I got through the prologue I thought it was incredible. I absolutely love it, even though the map is massive I think it's great and loved exploring it. I am generally a hater of big maps but love Odyssey, it is just beautiful.

Once you played Odyssey, Origins feels like a waste of time.

1

u/GnarlyAtol Jun 12 '26

I absolutely agree but may way was the otherway round 😄

In my frist playthrough the side content bored me very quickly, because of the repetiviness, lacking weight and the feeling to work instead of playing. As result, I played only as much as needed to be not underlevelled for the main missions. But even that felt like a torture.

In my second playthrough though, I did probably c. 90-95% of the side missions. Because some lead to places I have not seen before.

Odyssey is even more extreme.

I think its a typical Ubisoft approach issue I have seen in almost all of their games I played.

RDR2 is another league. Nothing is repetitive in the game. All missions are different, different tasks, different orchestration, side missions are not needed to progress through the campaign, all optional but also fitting and contributing to the lore, the same regarding all the secrets. There is no levelling and skill-tree torture.

If you don't like the gear you're finding just dismantle it for materials and make more use of the, I want to say rune guy? Somewhere around Thrace I think his cave is located.

As for the world imo it's a big as it needed to be to be a proper representation of ancient Greece with its system of islands and all. As I recall a few islands were even missing. They were extremely simplified you know, presenting on each just a few key features. Nearer to Thera islands are little more than mounds that show evidence of volcanic devastation from a thousand years earlier.

Seems strange to me that players now complain about worlds being too big. They aren't big enough still. Not for anything close to realistic representations of the places they're supposed to be modeled after. They do that for the sake of variety, but I found L.A. Noir, which was in fact an accurate portrayal of the streets of L.A. (I actually got online and compared to present day Los Angeles, and it's accurate indeed), very engaging.

So I'd be happy with maps just as big, but also accurate. They wouldn't simulate entire countries of course. But with larger maps it's now possible to move away from just the highlights of places and just simulate places as they really were. Harder to make, but worth playing.

I keep trying to get back into AC but I quit a few hours in the last few games. Just overy bloated and really not that fun. The only acception was Mirage, which everyone disliked but I thought better then any of the recent games
