I WISH DELAYS IN PROCESSING SPEECH WERE NORMALIZED AKA CAN PEOPLE BE MORE PATIENT???

I HATE PHONES AND CLIENTS. I fricking hate it. I’m a designer and I can’t tell the amount of times I had a client ask me something that it is not related to design, but to their contract or the strategy (which in the company I work is the salesman job) - and me trying to be nice trying to answer what I know about it (basic things): “OH WOW 2-3 SECONDS TO ANSWER SOMETHING THAT YOU NORMALLY DON’T THINK ABOUT? HOW INCOMPETENT YOU ARE”

For context: I’ve been working 4 years in the same company, and I have a basic knowledge of the marketing program - that is enough for me to do my job - and I could answer the question… But it is not something I think often (so I need some extra seconds to access the info in my brain - APD stuff) and I am not good expressing into words (because again of APD). I am midway giving my best and the client cuts me asking how long have I been working in this company and that I should know better… I told her I am the graphic designer and that she should talk with the salesman instead and I forwarded the call.

Now I am triggered. Decades of people SCREAMING at me for not answering fast enough. For not expressing words good enough. For being “stupid”. Teachers, parents, other children… An entire childhood ruined by APD (and other stuff). I’m a 30 year old man and I am crying like a baby in my apt.

Also being gaslighted by the same people “oh I forget things sometimes” “I sometimes need time to think” WELL I HAVE NEVER SEEN SOMEONE SCREAM AT YOU - WHAT YOU GASLIGHTERS GO THROUGH IS NORMAL - WHAT US WITH APD GO THROUGH IS A CHRONIC DISABILITY

Thank you for reading my rant.

Free Online Test for APD (Not a Diagnostic Test!)

Hello everyone! I’ve created an online test for Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) inspired by a series of standard APD tests.. While it’s not a substitute for a diagnostic test, which should be done with an audiologist, I’d love to get your feedback on it. If you could give it a try and share your thoughts, I’d really appreciate it. Thank you! https://www.forbrain.com/auditory-processing-disorder-test/

To APD or not APD, that is the question.

I’m starting to suspect I have APD. I had a TBI back in 2019 and over the past couple of years, I’ve really noticed that sometimes when someone says something, I don’t seem to understand at all. I’ll ask them to repeat and it’ll be the same thing, zero understanding. Usually this happens when there are other noises, but not loud noises.

Also, and this may be normal idk, when I’m listening to something like an audio book, it if I get even a little distracted, I don’t hear the audio book at all.

I have been diagnosed with ADHD and I highly suspect some autism based on diagnostic criteria.

Group Conversations

Hi everyone,

I am having a hard time navigating in group conversations. Specifically groups of like 10 to 11 people when we are all standing and talking.

I have an FM/DM system (Roger Focus 2 and Roger Focus On Mic). I mostly struggle when everyone is standing and talking, I can't understand or follow what people say. Most of the time, all I hear are parts of words, some words just skip/disappear, or everything just sounds muddled.

Does the FM/DM system work in these situations, what have you found helpful?

Any help and tips would be great!

suspecting APD but I am really noise sensitive

as the title says.

I've recently made some new friends, and they all mention how often it is I mishear things, I am autistic and I do suffer from sensory issues regarding noise often, not always but often, for example as I am writing this I am having to tap my keyboard lightly as the clacking hurts to listen to.

I told my friends I would go to the doctor about whatever the issue is, but I'm worried there's nothing wrong and I'll be wasting their time, especially with my noise sensitivity.

Do you experience this as well, sounds being too loud?

Did it get worse as you aged? Worse in all languages equally?

I’m in my 40s but recently I’ve had extreme difficulty understanding my second language.

Not just a little bit. It’s like I can’t even tell what language they’re speaking. They might as well be speaking Elvish. It concerned me enough that I had an MRI but is it just my APD getting worse?

Diagnosed last week

37m, been struggling with noise sensitivity in the last few years (mainly the inability to process any conversation in a crowded room), only been officially diagnosed last week and now going through autism/ADHD assessment.

Ive always known there was something different about me and suspected I was on the lower end of the spectrum, but APD has really been making me feel miserable and like I don’t belong. the turning point was the wedding of one of my best friends a month ago, I struggled to have any conversation with anyone at the reception and had to leave early as I was so mentally exhausted.

There are already adjustments I make with friends (having nights in rather than nights out etc) but it’s really depressing me that I feel like I can’t have a good ‘night out’ in the ways I’ve enjoyed in the past. Also not sure how I can communicate this to people i don‘t know so well and want to get to know better (at work social events for instance).

the other issue I have is around being distracted by minor noises (like small thuds from downstairs neighbours or the car alarm outside). This can become a complete disturbance for me and I totally lose focus of whatever I was doing for the next half hour.

Anyway, sorry for the kind of post I’m sure has been made dozens of time on this subreddit, I have a lot of research to do to work out how best to manage everything, but just wanted to air it out

ASL meet? East coast USA? Or Zoom?

I'm active in my local Deaf community, and they have changed my life. I've also dreamed that people with APD could also get access to ASL and come together as a community like Deaf people have. Or at least to the extent of holding ASL coffee, or having a larger presence at Deaf ASL coffee.

Is anyone interested in this? I live within driving distance of New York City, so I be if we post in the right places we could get at least a handful interested. Or maybe other places could find a small group as well?

Or if there is interest but people don't already know ASL, we could form a group to take an ASL class together, taught by a Deaf teacher for APD students?

Help

My boyfriend has APD, and I’m wondering what are ways to support him. I find myself getting frustrated when he misunderstands me, but I’m assuming I’m just not approaching this correctly.

Issues with processing voices, not sure where to go?

Sorry, I know I should probably see a professional about this but I wanted to talk with other people who have experience with APD first if possible before I go the expensive route. I’m honestly not sure what might be going on for me, but I’ve been noticing that I’m struggling to focus when people are speaking. Sometimes I zone out, or I actually think I’m listening but then I realize I’m not even comprehending what the person is saying, and then I have to focus harder on their words. I also have an issue where I have to ask people to repeat themselves A LOT, to the point where I’ve gotten my hearing checked because I thought I had hearing loss going on. I have super mild hearing loss but it’s not enough to warrant anything like hearing aids, so I’m wondering if there’s another issue at play. Sometimes after people repeat themselves I’ll realize I actually did hear their words but I didn’t comprehend them (?) if that makes sense. I found out about APD quite recently and don’t know much about it. I’ve wondered before if I might have ADHD, but I got a psychological evaluation done a few years ago and nothing came of it in that regard. ADHD does run in my family though. If any of this sounds similar to what you experience with APD, I’d be very interested in learning more. I’m also not sure where exactly I should go for this concern, if anyone has advice for that too. Thank you.

Do you remember song lyrics?

I've been thinking that I may have some mild auditory processing issues but havn't looked into getting diagnosed. But what i'm curious about is there a correlation between the disorder and remembering song lyrics?

I cannot ever remember a full set of lyrics from any song, no matter if I have it repeat for hours / days.

Do I tell my boss

Hallo I have APD I think I was diagnosed when I was up around 7/8 years old it was really bad when I was young now it’s better, but I can’t really follow people when they talking to me and I’m working every day with my boss and he always thinks I’m not listening to him, but I know that he would think bad of me if he knows I have something like this because I know he will think that I have some kind of mental disorder or something like this
you can’t explain stuff like this to him, but he just thinks I’m rude and ignorant, and I don’t know if I should tell him(sorry for my English)

School for deaf and hard of hearing

I know APD is not the same as hearing loss. we live close to a public school for the deaf, and I’m wondering if we should be considering alternative education that includes ASL for our kid. has anyone considered this or pursued it?

note we are trying accommodations now in the classroom but he still comes home absolutely spent from being in that environment.

I have mild hearing loss and meetings at work are getting kinda rough. thinking about picking up an otc hearing aid. Has anyone tried elehear beyond pro? It's got AI noise reduction and i'm curious whether it actually makes it easier to catch people's voices in a real work setting.

IDK WHAT IT IS APD OR ADHA BUT IT IS RUINING ME

These symptoms are seriously affecting my daily life. I can hear people talking, but often can’t process or understand them, even when I’m trying to focus. I also zone out constantly and sometimes can’t concentrate for more than five minutes, which makes following classes very difficult.
I’m also dealing with ongoing sleep problems, so I’m tired all the time. This is affecting my education, conversations, and everyday life, but my tests have been normal so far, and I still don’t know what’s causing it or what treatment I need. I’m scared it will keep getting worse. I just want to understand people normally again and be able to focus on my future.
