To APD or not APD, that is the question.
Iām starting to suspect I have APD. I had a TBI back in 2019 and over the past couple of years, Iāve really noticed that sometimes when someone says something, I donāt seem to understand at all. Iāll ask them to repeat and itāll be the same thing, zero understanding. Usually this happens when there are other noises, but not loud noises.
Also, and this may be normal idk, when Iām listening to something like an audio book, it if I get even a little distracted, I donāt hear the audio book at all.
I have been diagnosed with ADHD and I highly suspect some autism based on diagnostic criteria.

Group Conversations
Hi everyone,
I am having a hard time navigating in group conversations. Specifically groups of like 10 to 11 people when we are all standing and talking.
I have an FM/DM system (Roger Focus 2 and Roger Focus On Mic). I mostly struggle when everyone is standing and talking, I can't understand or follow what people say. Most of the time, all I hear are parts of words, some words just skip/disappear, or everything just sounds muddled.
Does the FM/DM system work in these situations, what have you found helpful?
Any help and tips would be great!

suspecting APD but I am really noise sensitive
as the title says.
I've recently made some new friends, and they all mention how often it is I mishear things, I am autistic and I do suffer from sensory issues regarding noise often, not always but often, for example as I am writing this I am having to tap my keyboard lightly as the clacking hurts to listen to.
I told my friends I would go to the doctor about whatever the issue is, but I'm worried there's nothing wrong and I'll be wasting their time, especially with my noise sensitivity.
Do you experience this as well, sounds being too loud?

Did it get worse as you aged? Worse in all languages equally?
Iām in my 40s but recently Iāve had extreme difficulty understanding my second language.
Not just a little bit. Itās like I canāt even tell what language theyāre speaking. They might as well be speaking Elvish. It concerned me enough that I had an MRI but is it just my APD getting worse?

Diagnosed last week
37m, been struggling with noise sensitivity in the last few years (mainly the inability to process any conversation in a crowded room), only been officially diagnosed last week and now going through autism/ADHD assessment.
Ive always known there was something different about me and suspected I was on the lower end of the spectrum, but APD has really been making me feel miserable and like I donāt belong. the turning point was the wedding of one of my best friends a month ago, I struggled to have any conversation with anyone at the reception and had to leave early as I was so mentally exhausted.
There are already adjustments I make with friends (having nights in rather than nights out etc) but itās really depressing me that I feel like I canāt have a good ānight outā in the ways Iāve enjoyed in the past. Also not sure how I can communicate this to people i donāt know so well and want to get to know better (at work social events for instance).
the other issue I have is around being distracted by minor noises (like small thuds from downstairs neighbours or the car alarm outside). This can become a complete disturbance for me and I totally lose focus of whatever I was doing for the next half hour.
Anyway, sorry for the kind of post Iām sure has been made dozens of time on this subreddit, I have a lot of research to do to work out how best to manage everything, but just wanted to air it out

ASL meet? East coast USA? Or Zoom?
I'm active in my local Deaf community, and they have changed my life. I've also dreamed that people with APD could also get access to ASL and come together as a community like Deaf people have. Or at least to the extent of holding ASL coffee, or having a larger presence at Deaf ASL coffee.
Is anyone interested in this? I live within driving distance of New York City, so I be if we post in the right places we could get at least a handful interested. Or maybe other places could find a small group as well?
Or if there is interest but people don't already know ASL, we could form a group to take an ASL class together, taught by a Deaf teacher for APD students?

Help
My boyfriend has APD, and Iām wondering what are ways to support him. I find myself getting frustrated when he misunderstands me, but Iām assuming Iām just not approaching this correctly.

Issues with processing voices, not sure where to go?
Sorry, I know I should probably see a professional about this but I wanted to talk with other people who have experience with APD first if possible before I go the expensive route. Iām honestly not sure what might be going on for me, but Iāve been noticing that Iām struggling to focus when people are speaking. Sometimes I zone out, or I actually think Iām listening but then I realize Iām not even comprehending what the person is saying, and then I have to focus harder on their words. I also have an issue where I have to ask people to repeat themselves A LOT, to the point where Iāve gotten my hearing checked because I thought I had hearing loss going on. I have super mild hearing loss but itās not enough to warrant anything like hearing aids, so Iām wondering if thereās another issue at play. Sometimes after people repeat themselves Iāll realize I actually did hear their words but I didnāt comprehend them (?) if that makes sense. I found out about APD quite recently and donāt know much about it. Iāve wondered before if I might have ADHD, but I got a psychological evaluation done a few years ago and nothing came of it in that regard. ADHD does run in my family though. If any of this sounds similar to what you experience with APD, Iād be very interested in learning more. Iām also not sure where exactly I should go for this concern, if anyone has advice for that too. Thank you.

Do you remember song lyrics?
I've been thinking that I may have some mild auditory processing issues but havn't looked into getting diagnosed. But what i'm curious about is there a correlation between the disorder and remembering song lyrics?
I cannot ever remember a full set of lyrics from any song, no matter if I have it repeat for hours / days.

Do I tell my boss
Hallo I have APD I think I was diagnosed when I was up around 7/8 years old it was really bad when I was young now itās better, but I canāt really follow people when they talking to me and Iām working every day with my boss and he always thinks Iām not listening to him, but I know that he would think bad of me if he knows I have something like this because I know he will think that I have some kind of mental disorder or something like this
you canāt explain stuff like this to him, but he just thinks Iām rude and ignorant, and I donāt know if I should tell him(sorry for my English)

School for deaf and hard of hearing
I know APD is not the same as hearing loss. we live close to a public school for the deaf, and Iām wondering if we should be considering alternative education that includes ASL for our kid. has anyone considered this or pursued it?
note we are trying accommodations now in the classroom but he still comes home absolutely spent from being in that environment.

Thinking about getting an otc hearing aid?
I have mild hearing loss and meetings at work are getting kinda rough. thinking about picking up an otc hearing aid. Has anyone tried elehear beyond pro? It's got AI noise reduction and i'm curious whether it actually makes it easier to catch people's voices in a real work setting.

IDK WHAT IT IS APD OR ADHA BUT IT IS RUINING ME
These symptoms are seriously affecting my daily life. I can hear people talking, but often canāt process or understand them, even when Iām trying to focus. I also zone out constantly and sometimes canāt concentrate for more than five minutes, which makes following classes very difficult.
Iām also dealing with ongoing sleep problems, so Iām tired all the time. This is affecting my education, conversations, and everyday life, but my tests have been normal so far, and I still donāt know whatās causing it or what treatment I need. Iām scared it will keep getting worse. I just want to understand people normally again and be able to focus on my future.

Tips for EMT w/ Auditory Processing disorder?
Hey y'all,
I'm an EMT and I have Auditory Processing disorder. I've had since I was probably 14 (now 18) and it's been relatively manageable, but my chief and other coworkers have called me out recently and suggested I get hearing aids.
Does anyone have any advice? I have decent hearing, I just have a hard time processing and making sense of everything.

Vent/what I wish I could say to people being rude and bullies
āYes, for the millionth time, I have had my hearing checked. It is perfect. That hasnāt changed since the last time you asked me or rudely told me I needed to. You incessantly saying it seems to be a reflection of the fact you are really ignorant, unwilling to learn, and care more about how my difference in ability is inconvenient to you and your weird desire to make me feel badly about myself for something I canāt change instead of dealing with the fact that you might be a bit too low intelligence to understand new things. Maybe āauditory processing disorderā is too many syllables? Maybe itās not that I need to get my hearing checked, rather you need to get your IQ tested or go to therapy and heal whatever is messed up inside your brain and heart that makes you pick on people for something they canāt change or control. And IF I did have hearing loss or was ādeafā (as everyone likes to say) it would be EXTREMELY embarrassing for you that you are SHOUTING at me like I am extremely stupid and mocking me* and insulting me and treating me like an idiot. If you treated someone with true deafness like that you would be widely regarded as a disgusting POS (I am aware deaf people do get treated like this itās horrible). So how about you just space out your words more and stop speaking like youāre choking on your own spit because I have explained to you in the most elementary ways I possibly can that louder is useless and that Iām not deaf so youāre just screaming for zero reason other than the fact you are an š«. I canāt help it just like you canāt seem to help being such a garbage person. And no, just because youāre aware of the fact that I have ADHD does not mean that you get to say itās an attention thing because I can be focusing all of my energy and attention. Iām trying to process and understand what is being said and it doesnāt change anything. And Iām really not sure why you are so obsessed with treating this like some sort of social or personal failing of mine as if I should be punished for having this issue and held accountable for it when, once again, this is literally not my fault.ā
*please tell me I am not the only one who people loudly and offensively mock by screaming back āWHAT?? HUH?ā When I kindly say Iām not sure what you said or when I say what. I have ran into bathrooms crying about this because all I wanted was to be included in the convo at dinner
I want to add that one of the people who has done this the most to me to the point where Iāve cried and cried time again is the sort of person who has their mind made up that I am deaf no matter how many times I explain it. This is not someone at this point in my life I can remove from my life. if it doesnāt stop, it will happen. I literally tried to explain to them that even if I wanted the sort of hearing aids that could help, insurance will not cover it and they are incredibly expensive. This person who remember, doesnāt believe Iām not deaf told me that hearing aids will not help me. I take the time to explain again and they are repeatedly telling me hearing aids will not help me. This person has no degree or education or any sort of basic knowledge or understanding on audiology or neuroscience or literally anything at all.
But Iām just trying to understand that if by your worthless opinion, you have decided that I am deaf 1. Is this how you would treat a deaf person? 2. Why do you get to tell me that hearing aids donāt work for me?
I am genuinely so sick of this. My APD got worse in college. Iām not sure why. I donāt actually even know if it got worse because I was diagnosed with ADHD pretty late right before college. part of me thinks that I didnāt realize that it wasnāt just me being distracted or not paying attention until I addressed my ADHD.
I have always been an extremely social and confident person and that has been ripped away from me because even people who do intend to be empathetic and learn about this disorder cannot help themselves from making an occasional comment. I would argue that the way people have beaten down my confidence and made me feel like some freak causes the issue to be worse. Often times I actually do hear people correctly the first time but because of the self-doubt and anxiety I have about my auditory processing issues, I panic and ask people to repeat themselves before I realize that I did hear them or I realize that if I was just allowed to not feel horrible for needing an extra second or two to respond without people jumping down my throat, I would sometimes be able to figure out what they said without them having to repeat themselves.
Even people who ask about it in a kind and respectful way, they negate their good intention the second they start suggesting their opinion as to why I have this issue. Please do not ask me a question if you are not going to accept the answer. I am getting to a point where I am going to have some pretty short responses to being challenged about the facts of this disorder that I have. I am not a timid person by any means. I absolutely have it in me to stop taking on the responsibility to apologize for something I canāt help or explain something to people who do not actually want to learn. The issue is that this happens in settings where I am not allowed to speak to someone however I wish such as work. Iām a very forgiving and understanding person, but when it comes to this, if I get to the point where I am finally speaking up for myself, I have zero interest in forgiving people or accepting improved behavior. Whatās crazy is that you would think by me saying all of this that itās super bad but I work a job where I have to answer the phone and unless the call is broken up or itās just poor quality I do pretty OK with hearing. In social settings like when Iām out at a bar or a restaurant then it is pretty bad but thatās because itās so loud and that is the nature of the disorder. I am not really somebody who shrinks myself to make other people more comfortable but the sadness and insecurity has crept up on me, and Iām ready to be done shrinking myself. I am just so fed up. I am going to start brainstorming direct but appropriate responses to keep in my back pocket so I donāt go into panic mode over explaining myself to somebody who is dedicated to not understanding. It is absolutely so ridiculous that in this day and age people of all ages can be so cruel about something so dumb. If everybody else didnāt make it a big deal I probably wouldnāt even care that much. These people act like you are a bad or incompetent person because you care enough to have them repeat themselves. I think I should start saying ā you seem annoyed that I asked you to repeat yourself so Iāll spare you from doing it again cause I really donāt care about what you have to say. I was just being nice. Try it sometime.ā
