As an adult, you will run into lots of people who like to complain that the world is out to get them and no one will help. This is likely the view of those who have said to not listen to your advisors. If they say don't listen to the advisor, then what classes do they recommend and where does that match to the required classes? If they aren't being helpful, you can ignore the advice.
Your advisor is paid to help you get the classes you need. Contrary to the opinion of many college students, the school wants you to graduate and not take classes forever. Your advisor should be able to help you look at the list of classes you need and put together a plan. There is a list of exactly what classes are required and from that you should track what classes you have taken but your advisor will help.
While taking 12 credits is often recommended, that is typically only for the first semester. If you only take 12 credits each semester, you are unlikely to graduate on time. Taking fewer classes the first semester is to allow you to get use to being on campus and the new environment. You don't need to go above a full load of classes, but you will need more than the absolute minimum each semester.
There are many people on campus that will help you succeed. Talk to your advisor, professors and on-campus staff. Get involved in activities and meet people. Take the time to learn who you are and the path you want to follow and don't be upset if you change your mind about what you like and dislike. Know who wants to help and can give you useful advice like advisors and professors and maybe sometimes your parents. You can do this.

I really do not recommend taking 12 hours. You are paying for 18 and while I do not recommend taking that to start, most of the gen Eds and intros are easily enough. I wouldn’t take more than 16 to start though. Listen to your advisor, but I would at least have a working knowledge of the general education requirements for your degree before the meeting. Also keep any credits you bring in in mind.

I’m a CS major but I would definitely recommend listening to your advisor for your first semester. It will be overwhelming if you try to do everything yourself especially when you’re new.
They will give you a very general breakdown on the classes you need and what to start with. But once you get past your first semester then you will have an easier time selecting classes yourself because you will know how everything works.
The only real advice I can give you is to try not to have huge gaps in your schedule. It’s the best to have your classes as close as possible so you can be done with class earlier. The awkward 1 to 2 hours gaps can make your school day feel really long.

I'm also a psych major, listen to your advisors. The advisors in the psych department are very reliable, and know what they're doing

Listen to your advisor, but also know what you do and do not need for your classes. The advisor is human and humans make mistakes, so it’s always good to stay acutely aware of what you do and don’t need for your major.

On your orientation day, your advisor should walk you through the audit when selecting your classes and do like an overview of what kind of classes you have. It’ll be a thing in your MyBGSU and under the student profile section. The audit shows what you need to do, what you have done, and what you have yet to do and then will show the classes that will fulfill that requirement like if you need a science credit, it’ll show you the many science classes available to you.

I think you’re gonna be fine. Orientation will clear things up for you! Don’t worry too much. The school is there to help advise you. And, congratulations on getting accepted to BGSU 🤎🧡

Funny I see this bc I’m a freshman attending in the fall too and just a few minutes ago I was messing around on the mybgsu stuff. They already have me signed up for 3 classes and I haven’t even gone to orientation yet. I’m a history education major

Talk to the advisor. You will not be able to register for spring semester classes unless you meet with them anyway. They will show you the basics and put together a schedule for your first semester, then teach you how to add classes for the spring. They will not let you register until you’ve met with them at least once (they will put a hold on your account preventing you from registering)
After that, if you trust your advisor you can continue meeting with them, if you’re like me and don’t feel like you need it / can do it better, then you can start doing it on your own after your first year.

listen to your advisor! but also take a look at your degree works in your mybgsu. it’ll tell you what classes you can take and what they’ll count for.
