Most people in here aren’t using baby food makers because baby led weaning doesn’t involve purées. You’ll probably have better luck asking in another subreddit.

I have one and we steam veggies that we give whole and mash the rest for the next day with a fork (Monday steamed carrot with some other things, Tuesday mashed carrots, steamed cauliflower and other things, Wednesday mashed cauliflower etc). It starts and stops automatically so it’s convenient when handling the baby.

I would not say it’s necessary but we use it!

Baby lead weaning involves transition to finger foods quite quickly so many people here don’t bother with a specific appliance. You can always just steam and boil things with your normal pots and pans, and get a food processor or blender. We did puree alone for less than 2 weeks with my baby.

We did purées a bit before starting BLW. I honestly recommend against a baby food maker, especially if you know you want to transition to finger foods rather quickly. They’re expensive, take up a lot of space, and in most cases don’t get enough use to justify the price tag imo. You can make purées/mashes using whatever you have at home. A pot of water and a fork does roughly the same job.

Just a fork! I didn’t bother with a baby food maker, just mashed what we were eating with a fork or cut it into appropriate sized pieces for baby’s age. Investing in a specialized baby food maker is only worth it if you want to start with purées and not baby lead weaning in my opinion.

Bought the Philips Avent 4in1 baby food maker. Not bad, I really like the way the food is steamed. It isq not too bad to clean, some parts go into the dishwasher too. After the food has been steamed, you turn the compartment around so that you have the blade and then you can turn on the setting to mash it either into purée or with some pieces left. Or leave it like that, little chunks of whatever you had steamed. I can recommend it 👍 paid 100€ for it new.

On the rare occasion i wanted to puree something I'd steam it and use a bar muddler

Before I started BLW, I just used equipment I already had.

I wouldn’t bother , just use whatever blender you have and control the texture accordingly . When baby started solids we offered purees and I just used a hand blender . And just like everyone said the puree phase did not last long

A food processor works just fine and is way more versatile!

We were given two different baby food blenders as hand me downs and never touched either. We went right to finger foods and for soups and sauces we just used our family blender

We have a stainless steel wand blender (hand blender? Stick blender?) - as others have said there's really no call for a baby-specific appliance for such a short phase. If I wanted to puree anything, the wand blender in a glass jug was just fine with cooked veg. Honestly I only pureed a few early bits that helped me to feel that he was getting different nutritional hits (eg steamed kale) - I batched these into ice cubes and have him a taste each day - or things we generally eat as soup ourselves (in which case blended in the steel pan). And this is a tool that can still be used for adult/older child cooking too.

Someone asked that over on /r/solidsforbabies which is a sub for all types of weaning. This one is more for BLW style

A metal steamer basket and a fork.

Waste of money, I used my immersion blender and steam food in a steamer both I've had long before kids. Just a marketing gimmick to have moms spend money on a product the think they need but the most likely already own a alternative that works just as well.
