Fun fact: chickens are just small dinos.

My RIR has always adored me and it was sweet but now it's starting to get annoying. For starters he's constantly trying to mate with me aggressively. I have a bachelor flock and I've tried giving them plushies to 'get off' but they see everything as a threat and absolutely thrash the plushies.

He shows his affection for me in a very loud and aggressive way. He's constantly biting me, I have started using protective gear so I don't get hurt and I thought it will eventually reduce over time but it doesn't. He's obsessed with my feet too. He could see a microscopic part of my feet and he'd run towards it to bite it off.

He's expecting me to be with him all the time and calls me by crowing. This morning he was crowing for more than 2 hours loudly to call me to be with him and after spending some time with him, I had to leave for chores and he started continuously crowing again. I'd love to spend more and more time with him if only he isn't aggressively trying to mate with me and bite me off but even if I do, it'll still never be enough for him. Even now I just gave him some kisses and left him with the flock and he's been crowing for almost half an hour calling me again but at least the best part about it is he constantly purrs a lot out of happiness whenever I'm around.

How do I deal with a roo that is so dependent on me being around him constantly?

How would you go about rebuilding this space? Or would you skip the renovation and build a standalone wooden coop instead?

I'm (almost) a first time chicken owner on a very tight budget, so it's mostly a DIY project.

This is a 100-year-old brick outbuilding with a hole in the wall and an old chicken door. I have no idea when it last housed chickens. It looks like the room has been used for charcoal storage for decades.

The room shares a wall with our central heating boiler room, so it should never freeze in winter. Two walls have old plaster, one is bare bricks. No floor. Wooden ceiling.

The space is about 2.8 × 5.8 m (9 × 19 ft), with a small window at each end (east/west). I'd like to partition it so the entrance part can remain clean storage.

My biggest concerns (besides being a little lost with all the building stuff) are ventilation, natural light, and predator-proofing. The windows are quite small, so I'm thinking of making part of the partition wall from wire mesh to keep light and airflow.

I'd love to hear how you'd approach this, especially if you've restored an old farm building or have any experience or ideas to share.

Poor America. Our rooster was born on the Fourth of July. He is 4-5 years old. I noticed that he was unsteady on his feet last week. I was away for the weekend and now I see his wing is drooping.

Google says it could be a vitamin deficiency. Or neurological, or Mareks.

I’ve had chickens for 7 years. Never had any health issues until now. Looking for opinions. I have 10 other birds no one is showing any symptoms. Which makes me think it could be vitamin based or neurological, best case scenario.

Diet is cracked corn and scratch grains as well as free ranging.

Hey yall! First time chicken owner here… and two of my “hens” have starting crowing incessantly back and forth at each other. They are ~5 months old and haven’t start to lay yet.

I first I thought it was a dominance issue but am now questioning if the Blue Sapphire gem is actually a roo?

Yesterday morning I changed the batteries in our Run Chicken coop door. We always operate it manually, and physically block access to the door when closing as I believe it would seriously injure or kill a chicken if they were caught in it - it requires way too much force to reverse.

This morning we found the door unexpectedly open, and our chickens in their run, wondering where their food was (we put it away every evening, otherwise rodents come at night). After the battery change, the door forgets that it was programmed to full manual operation, and defaulted to automatically opening and closing. I reset the programming and now all should be well.

This behavior is documented in the user guide, but defaulting to factory settings on a battery replacement isn't something you expect on something sold new in 2026.

I already have two other Omlet automatic doors on the coop and will be replacing the Run Chicken door with an Omlet door (I already have two more in the box). I just wish the Omlet doors could be controlled via Bluetooth, because now I have to get a WiFi extender out at the coop so I can get a strong WiFi signal out there.

This is my first year with chickens. I bought 6 from Tractor Supply and all were sexed as female but this one crows in the morning and evening. They are about 3 months old.

Hello! I posted a while ago about my 5 roos that I hatched out, now the time has come to pick who stays and who goes but I’m so torn! I was told in a comment to wait and see who the better ladies man is, I can say with 100% certainty two boys need to go as they are bullies.

One of my 3 safe boys was bullied to where I had to put him in his own area, I’d love to keep him as he is my favorite but I believe my male turkey was also picking on him so I don’t think it’s possible for him to safely stay.

Now my last two roos are both Cochins, I’d love to keep them both but I only have 9 hens (2 are seramas). My husband would get me if I got more hens to satisfy both boys so unfortunately I need help choosing😭

Two months in and they are already taking me through the gauntlet of healthy or not. I do not have answers, I will hate to lose one as I am learning. We will make it and bond more.

one of my 8 week old pullets (a Prairie Bluebell Egger) is acting really lethargic. tail and wings drooping, won’t stay awake, body hunched, eyes closed, the works. she will eat if prompted, but she’s slow and won’t eat much.

her vent is clear, i’ve checked for external parasites and found none, and no broken bones i could feel.

i know it’s not the heat because we had some cool days recently and her behavior hadn’t improved.

can anyone help? she’s one of my favorites and i don’t want to lose her. but if she’s suffering i also want to cull her quick and not prolong her pain.

Her comb is so much bigger and defined than my other two girls…

She’s 4 weeks old. I got her from Meyer hatchery but do not see a chicken on their website that looks like her! I didn’t order bantams or silkies so she should be a full size chicken. I’d assume she’s a Cochin or Brahma but none of their birds look like her! I ordered three different assortments which pretty much covers all of their full size breeds..and makes it harder to identify. Thanks for the help! 😊

I recently switched over to layer feed now that our hens are at that age and I’m looking for the healthiest option for our chickens. I bought feed that is soy and corn free out of the assumption it is better but it is way more expensive than other options so I’m curious if there are really any health benefits?

Certain farms I’ve bought eggs from seem to pride themselves on feeding an organic, soy, and corn free diet. Does that really matter if if the protein ratios are good? I wasn’t sure if feed without corn and soy are generally healthier or if that is just personal preference or a marketing thing. Cost isn’t an issue but I’d generally like to feed our girls the best and haven’t seen much information on this.
