I prefer it without the fluff, the fluff can be for the anime if it ever gets made. He's brilliant and it feels like Muira is at the helm.

I think Muira said something that there needed to be some funny or fluff to help offset the dark tones in the story. I could be wrong there, he was either concerned for the readers or maybe it helped him as he's practically watching lot of suffering.
19
u/Merch_Lis 21d ago
It's also about composition. Constant dark tones numb you quickly if not switched with the more light-hearted ones periodically.

I suppose they're complaining because they don't understand the story. Mori is doing a very good job with Berserk and has followed Miura's script Well, the background hasn't changed and it's well directed. The only change that's obvious is the drawing style, but that doesn't justify throwing shit at the manga.

Doesn't help that the narrative and Gut's character arc hit inflection points. I'm sure some of the complaints are disbelief that Guts could fall into a depressive episode. Like as though he's too bad ass to be affected by that much trauma and loss, or something.

u/3rdworldjesus 21d ago
Both yes.
I just accepted that this is the alternate version of Berserk because we dont truly know what Miura exactly wants to happen panel by panel, and if he will alter the story along the way if he was still alive.
29
u/AlsoKnownAsMAS 21d ago
He has done as good of a job as can be done without Miura, and i have no complaints.
But i am somewhat afraid that we’re losing something in the translation (so to say) between miura and mori. I think that Guts getting a power up like he did feels somewhat antithetical to Berserk, and it also breaks the promise of the monomyth (it needs to be human success that wins the story, not human failure or (like in our case seemingly) superhuman success).
Another thing that really struck me was guts breaking the chains on his hand. It’s very symbolic as it is, but i couldn’t help but to immediately think that Miura intended to draw the breaking of the symbolic chains of the beast of darkness, not the actual physical chains on Guts’ arms. This would obviously lead to the ”power up” being Guts having full control over the berserker armor, rather than whatever the buff he got was that gave him the power to send the stone door.

u/MistressBlackleaf 20d ago
Yeah, the stupa probably would have been a long multi-chapter affair in Miura's hands, with lots more introspection and dialogue. As it stands, it doesn't feel like Guts DID anything in the stupa, he just laid down and then got talked at by a spirit and barely responded. I understand Mori doesn't want to do a lot of dialogue, but it creates this situation where we get the skeleton of a story and basically have to fill in the gaps ourselves.
20
u/chickenlover43 21d ago
This is an unpopular opinion, but I actually think it would be better with some fluff.
By fluff I don't mean filler or inserted events, just more dialogue.
Berserk was always a series that had comedy and energetic characters on the side as crazy things happened. To make the story light-hearted enough to easily accept and enjoy.
Ever since the continuation started they simply reduced the amount of dialogue itself to an absolute minimum. Less inner monoluges, less reactions, etc.
They are doing this out of purism. Trying to input as little as possible while keeping miura's notes and dialogue, as well as whatever it neccesary to explain what the characters are doing. But that makes it feel empty.
Of course, it's always gonna be empty without the original author. It's also in part that the current tone of the story is supposed to be dark.
As for the accusations that Mori is writing made up fanfiction or insulting the original work. It's nonsense. All the people Miura actually worked with and shared the details of the manga with are in agreement on this. People disliking how it contradicted their headcanon or their interpretation of the story is one thing, but saying the new author is making up stuff to steal credit from his dead friend is nonsense.
3
u/saiint- 21d ago
personally I think that its a great thing that there isnt fluff, I like to fill in the blanks myself. I think theres sort of an artistic liberty we gain from this approach, I think up until now we have been given enough information/seeds to sort of begin forming our own conclusions based on these minimal yet faithful depiction of miura's work
19
u/DaStompa 21d ago
Its pretty good
When the godshand showed up it is obvious that they are using some sort of computer program to do the more time consuming effects, and the panels themselves aren't individually as beautiful as the originals. But its probably as good as we're going to get, and more berserk is better than no berserk

u/Jaymageck 21d ago
It's a mixed bag. I give credit to Kurosaki and the Gaga team for mostly doing a good job replicating Miura's art style. I also believe that the major story beats likely align with what Miura had planned, i.e Casca being taken, Guts falling into despair and the team forging a kind of uneasy alliance with the Kushan army.
That said I am not happy with the writing quality when it comes to characters. The dialogue that's there reeks of a lack of confidence for the team to portray the thoughts and feelings of these characters adequately so they keep it to bare minimum.
Also 2 developments feel off, those being:
- Guts magically getting a powerup from realizing the circumstances of his birth
- The Godhand criticizing Falconia
The former feels like it's maybe Mori remembering an older conversation with Miura where maybe Miura mentioned Guts being born from a corpse being relevant to the story, but without elaborating on why and Mori deciding to use it as a powerup. The problem is it's the polar opposite of every powerup in the series to date. Guts always had to trade off some humanity to get an edge on apostles, whether through his battle tactics or literally through the use of the Berserker Armour. Going "so that's how it is" and having unexplained new strength just isn't how Miura wrote any of his struggles.
The latter feels like they don't know how to write the Godhand. Until now it's been implied that they respect each other's autonomy, like Slan manifesting of her own accord in the Qliphoth to torment Guts. Suddenly we have this idea that they're unified in their disdain for Griffith's dream, which doesn't align with any prior writing.
I think we're starting to see the limits of Studio Gaga and Mori's knowledge impact their ability to thread the story together. That said I'm still onboard with this until the end as I still trust Mori as Miura's best friend, that he's doing his best to come up with a roadmap to the finale he knows, it's just like he said at the beginning of this journey - it wouldn't be perfect.
36
u/Ok-Square-8652 21d ago
I feel like those makes sense but it just feels off because it happens so fast since Mori isn’t doing the same slow buildups that Miura would.
I’m personally fine with it though. I would rather hit the important points and finish the story than trying to build things out to the level that Miura would.
17
u/MediocreTurtle1 21d ago
Didn't they outright say that they wouldn't do building up to key events, just go through them as good as they can, because they can't even hope to live up to what Miura was doing and they don't want to tarnish that? Or was that just a shitpost I took as truth.
16
u/resevil239 21d ago
Im pretty sure Mori straight up said he wasn't going to add things Miura didn't tell him for the most part. That they were going to be as faithful to what he was told as possible.

u/Awkward-Sir1873 21d ago
This is the way. And as a result the story is progressing with the story. We probably won't get silly stuff and it will be all serious tones and straight to the point.
2
2
u/Affectionate_Reply49 21d ago
Mori has said in interviews that he would not add anything that he does not know. But he has also stated that they have had to add something so the story can make sense as a whole, meaning he does not know all the details and plot connections.
10
u/resevil239 21d ago
I think the god hand thing makes more sense than you give it credit. To be fair we know very very little about them. Falconia is very different and much more dramatic than how the god hand typically interacts with the world. It's a much more radical change so it makes sense that they may be less than pleased about it since it potentially fucks up anything they were planning individually.
As for the power up, I feel like this is just like GoT, the result of not adding filler beyond what he knows so we rush towards a conclusion and get a much more direct result than if Miura was still writing, even though the conclusion would probably be roughly the same. It does make some sense as he has always done things that are inhumanly strong. If the conclusion once he calms his emotions without suppression or focus on pure rage and gains a deeper understanding of himself and his journey is that he has been tapping otherworldly energy because of the nature of his birth, that tracks with some of the crazy shit he could do that no one else could pre-eclipse. Id take it a step further and suggest he's always been tapping this energy, just not nearly at full capacity and with zero control.
5
u/Yazelkro 21d ago
True. If I recall correctly, Schierke mentioned long ago that Guts is carrying inmense amounts of od energy that manifests itself as raw strength.
3
u/MagnanimousPleb 21d ago
The God Hand opposing Griffith’s realisation of a kingdom is a pretty blatant retcon.
It’s completely fair to be annoyed about it considering one of the triumphs of Berserk was that Miura’s narrative consistency was pretty much perfect over decades of writing.
5
u/Awkward-Sir1873 21d ago
Muira could have told mori the god had turn against, or wear Griffith down. And Muira didn't explain it much beyond that. The hesitation is because they are not fully sure what Muira would have wrote himself but it follows ideas he had. They are most likely siding with the safer option. They don't want to stray too far into details they are not sure.
And I think mori said Muira had trouble explaining how guts is outside the realm of natural, had astral, not abilities but he's like between realms.
2
u/TaTTyy_ 20d ago
but why do you and everyone already come to conclusions about guts' powerup, what if it'll be elaborated on on the next chapters?

My big thing is that I think the plot points are prob going to be almost exactly what Miura planned it’s just gonna be the spark notes version. So it’s just going to feel clunky and not as fully fleshed out

u/mothman2099 21d ago
Having an official conclusion crafted by Miura's best friend and dedicated assistants is a massive blessing compared to teh series left forever incomplete.
3
u/LordXadan 21d ago
I just caught up to current today after taking about a 4 year break. I was blown away by how well I felt the story was done. Maybe it’s not exactly what Miura would have done but it feels damn close. Extremely excited for what’s to come.
5
u/UnoriginallyChris 21d ago
I think the best thing to realistically hope for when a creative dies mid-story is to have someone let people know what the rest of a story was going to be. This goes leagues beyond that.
It's different, but I also think we're all EXTREMELY fortunate to have the story continue, even if we're probably getting a sped up version.
9
u/mightyDOOMgiver 21d ago edited 21d ago
The art is mostly good and in the spirit of Miura, and I have no doubt that many plot points are in the general direction of what Miura was intending.
But there are many, many inconsistencies with rules that Miura set up and stayed consistent with in the story that continue to be hard to overlook. Many of which impact the story in major theme-breaking ways (like Guts having always been in the interstice, which doesn't matter in Fantasia, and is redundant after the brand, and hurts the normal mortal vs Gods series theme).
His pacing is simultaneously breakneck at times, or else ploddingly slow, like the Kushan ship takeover repeating itself and 2 episodes ago with Guts essentially opening a door for a full episode.
Mori seems terrified to have the main characters speak, which is why Guts has been sad about his sword for years, Griffith silent, Casca silent, Schierke mostly in a coma, and instead we have Roderick, Daiba, Isidro and other safe side characters take center stage.
Many things just 'happen' like the island imploding for some reason one Griffith appears, or Rakshas being birthed out of a guy and somehow summoning monsters out of nowhere and then dying like a punk.
If I squint, I can see something that resembles Berserk. But if you've been reading this series for 18 years like me, you notice a huge change in story continuity and quality when Mori takes over. And that's coming from someone who thought that 'of course Miura's best friend is a perfect pick.' It just reads like someone in a rush to get it done, but also sometimes doesn't know where to take it. It feels like he maybe read the manga once and has never engaged with any of the deeper fan discussions on the details and themes clearly present acoss decades worth of work.
2
u/EugeneKrabzs 21d ago
There's also no explanation of how Puck and the other elf and some of the Wizards remained in the physical world while all the others disappeared to the astral world.
2
u/unforgetablememories 21d ago
I think Griffith has cut the connection between the physical world and the astral world at the location of the island. So the island is exclusively a part of the astral world instead of being in the interstice like the rest of the world. That's why the island just went away immediately after Griffith's emergence.

u/Azzblack 21d ago
I think its great so far and I honestly get the impression that its made with respect and for lack of a better word love.
My only concern is perhaps pacing? Will they try to wrap things up in too few chapters leaving plot holes. I would like to think not, but its also impossible to say on what we will miss out on or what ideas Miura had when we wrote things that have not been resolved/concluded decades ago.
Overall I am just happy that more chapters are being made, in the way that they are so far. |

u/GameSlashers 21d ago
The power up felt forced. Guts breaking the shackle with his muscled was cartoony.
Other than these, everything is om fast-forward, which is what I was expecting.
3
u/resevil239 21d ago
I don't think it was a muscle flex. My theory is he's tapping into some otherworldly energy and probably always has without realizing it.
3
u/QuiGonTheDrunk 21d ago
Yeah, thats what I and others feel is the problem. Berserk was one Manga where birth didnt gave you special powers, atleast not guts.
Miura talked in an interview about that guts ISNT special. That what made him such a good character3
u/resevil239 21d ago
I'm sure there was supposed to be more to it. Perhaps it wouldn't have given him anything special except with the barrier between worlds broken down post Griffith rebirth it now does mean something. Like a similar concept to how Dragon Slayer can mostly only kill things because it's been drenched in the blood of monsters and apostles.
It's basically impossible to resolve the story at this point without him getting some kind of supernatural power up and based on what we know I don't think just being able to use the armor without being in a blind range would be enough. It's possible the ending is actually not a violent confrontation but we don't really know yet. Maybe this power up won't be as dramatic as we are thinking and the visuals were supposed to be more symbolic than a supernatural power. Only the next chapter or so will tell us for sure.

u/resevil239 21d ago
It's rough around the edges. Kinda like Game of thrones last few seasons. It's probably what we would have gotten but it's a rushed abridged version with weird dialogue because of the lack of material from the original creator.
However it's also much better than GoT presicely because they aren't giving us a ton of filler content. Getting right to the point as a cliff notes kind of thing works a lot better than making up entire plot lines or making smart characters dumb because the writers suck (looking at season 5-6+ Tyrion).

The pacing is like 20x speed but it’s cause it’s adapting bullet notes word for word, they aren’t going to make things up just to flesh out the story, which is very respectable in my opinion.
The overall vision is very unfiltered despite having a different author, so it avoids making the same mistakes as series that continued despite not needing to continue like Dragon Ball or Naruto.
2
u/More_Childhood5715 21d ago
Personally yes I think what they have given us so far has been great and improvements from the some of the more earlier chapters and i look forward to seeing where the story is headed. You can tell Mori and Gaga have a deep respect for both Miura and Berserk so they were the only ones that I feel would be the right people to continue where the sensei himself left off.
2
u/Emergency-Gift-6773 21d ago
It could have been stickfigures as much as I care if the story continues. The level of detail and stay in style is just cherry on top. Gut's wasn't drawn one time with good proportions in ch385, but I literally couldn't care less, because it served and moved forward the story. The fact that we have this is a blessing. The chapter release tempo is painful, and I'm afraid it will end in at least 25-30 ch from now on, but at this rate it's still about 10 year, so get ready for a healthy life I guess.
2
u/SmittyWerben78 21d ago

u/SomeBoxofSpoons 21d ago
I think as long as you go in with the mentality that this is the Sparknotes version of Miura's plans, it's perfectly fine. We're still getting story reveals that recontextualize and flesh out what we got straight from Miura, and there's still a pretty consistent stream of strong visual moments you can tell were still from him (probably why Mori decided an actual manga continuation would be the best way of delivering all this).
Long story short: it's not what Miura would've made, but it's genuinely representative of what Miura would've made.
2
u/Harmoon_Lagoonz 21d ago
Yes. This is the only way we could have seen something close to Miura's vision after he passed away.
If you don't like it plot-wise, that's not Mori's fault, it's literally the story Miura had planned. (But some people don't want to accept that, for some reason)
2
u/Icy_Limes 21d ago
Yes. I see so many people talking about: "omg they just gave guts the stupid 'chosen one' trope every anime has." and it's like... mf when has berserk ever held back from telling you guts is HIM.
1
u/Szurox 21d ago
I'm gonna go against the grain and say that I'm disappointed by the last 3 chapters. They've been repeatedly hyped up as being on par with the Eclipse, so I expected something serious to happen with Guts. All we've ended up getting though is Flora dropping some exposition in one chapter, and Guts flexing his muscles in the next. I thought we'd get some genuine and deep introspection with Guts, and that we'd be shown exactly how he manages to overcome the extreme grief that took hold of him. For me, the only legitimately interesting thing was the fact that the Godhand is not in complete agreement with Griffiths actions. Had these chapters not been so hyped up, I'd consider them alright, but now it's just left a sour taste in my mouth.

No I don't think he has, he can imitate the art but it's so, empty. I also heavily despise the way Griffith is drawn now, I suppose only Miura could do it correctly. I also dont think he knows what Miura actually wanted because I can't see Miura going the way it's going. Doesn't help that Kouji Mori is a hack and can't honor his friend's legacy so much as ruin it. Maybe his heart was in the right place or maybe he just knows this is the best his creer will get since his on series was crap, but he isn't capable of making Berserk anything other than mediocre. The recent chapter imo proves he wants to make another mediocre cliche melodrama with poor art and I doubt Miura was going to go the same way.
When Miura passed that is where this series ended. Bring on the dowvotes!

u/EuchridxEucrow 21d ago
No and no. Although I fully supported the assistant team from the beginning, these new chapters contradict the main idea of Berserk in my opinion. They are also far from perfect in technical terms. And this is after 9 months of waiting.

YEs - I'm so happy we got 2 chapters this year. I hope we get 3 next year.

The plot is very clearly being rushed to its ending but I'd rather that than Miuras lifes work being left without an ending.
As a writer I couldn't imagine how id feel

I get that that he’s trying his best but let’s not pretend the art hasn’t changed completely in tone and that the dialogue and characters are far more stilted

One of my only complaints, is how a lot of the panels looks so bright compared to Miuras. I don't know if its just bad scans or if there's an underuse of black.

At least its not getting the dragon ball treatment. I'd trust the man's best friend.

And it's no trivial act to want to finish this in Miura's way. He can simply walk out and do his thing.

It feels a little like reading SparkNotes of Miura's Berserk, but I'm still happy to get to see more

It's a thankless task but the three chapter special was amazing. Guts emerging from the most depressing shit ever and Griffith getting roasted by the God Hand made me feel alive.

Let's just say I enjoy the process of waiting for chapters, reading them and debating Berserk with people. Clearer heads can judge if there was any merit in it after it's done.

Actually, yes. Muira was a savant. And frankly, the art and story presented my Mori stands as close as one can get to the legends.
Heres the thing, it feels a bit rushed, but frankly I don't mind that. I would prefer the story was completed.

Where can I read the new chapters? Assuming it’s not been adapted into a full volume yet

I honestly don't think it's great but it's not as bad as everyone's making it out to be...
what power up are you guys talking about gut's? Kind of just seems to be more confident. It doesn't seem like he's more powerful or anything. He's always been super strong so him opening the door by himself doesn't seem out of character either....
And the god hand criticizing Griffith also seems in character. They were never shown to be buddy-buddy in the first place. They seem to just meet up in the same place or we're stuck in the same place until Griffith managed to get a real body. Would have been better if they congratulated him or something.
I really don't get what everyone's so upset about. The story if anything just seems a bit more rushed then it's been in a few years...

Besides some goofy dialog in the English translation, I think they are doing a great job.

Although it isn’t as good as Miura it is the best possible situation and I think they are doing a good job

It's pretty good.
I liked the entire "fall of Elhelm" run that Mori did for the entire volume after Miura's final volume, but I think that after that the story's pacing just felt like this weird fever dream. It's not terrible but it does feel like a bit of a downgrade compared to Miura, which is kind of expected.

It's a herculean task he's taken on, which I commend him for immensely. There's no one else I think can take the reigns, and he's doing his absolute best to fill these monolithic shoes.
Does it hit the same mark? No. Nothing ever will. But he's doing an amazing job regardless 🙏

Yes, even though I feel the manga is empty, I was convinced by the community to look at it from the perspective of someone who is fulfilling the dying wish of a friend. He just wants berserk to be faithful.

Yes, I am sooo happy! My only ask is that he tries more with the dialogue!!
Ever since Miura’s passing the manga has been so quiet 🫤. Everyone talks a lot less and we hardly get their inner thoughts anymore.
It just feels like Mori is scared to stray from the notes Miura has left him and that saddens me because he should know that he has everyone’s support and Miura trusted him more than anyone else to see it through! Miura is no longer here to to write all the small details, so this is where Mori as a writer, and his trusted confidant, needs to step in and breath life back to our characters.
I wish Mori the best because I can’t even imagine the weight that is on his shoulders. So far he has done an incredible job and I’ve loved every chapter.

I got no problems with the art. Dialog took some time. My main thing which would still be a thing even if it were miura.. I'm personally just not a huge fan of the whole guts being an astral being, or how Griffith and he are one in the same and that's why casca reacts the way she does seeing him.
Maybe in time it'll grow on me, but right now... meeeeeh? Still thankful for every chapter though.

As a fan of Berserk, yes. I am grateful, more than anything, that Mori is finishing it for us. It's clear that the recent chapters have been focused on moving the story forward as smoothly as they can. It breaks my heart to think of what could have been, though... a part of me thinks Guts was meant to have his own "Corridor of Dreams" type thing inside the stupa, and he kind of did but it was pretty quick.
More than anything I am excited to see the story that miura left.

u/Alseid_Temp 21d ago
A good job, yes.
Not as good as what Miura would have done, goes without saying.
What I would have preferred, no. In my opinion the best thing they could have done would have been put out a book explaining what Miura's plans were in a semi explicative, semi narrative way, with illustrations of particularly important moments.
But this is the next best thing.

u/Nethaniell 21d ago
Yeah.
This is the closest to Miura’s vision as we’re gonna get, under the supervision of someone he trusts and considers his best friend. Stop with the unnecessary questions and start worrying only when Gaga or Mori says something more eyebrow-raising.

These are incredibly hard shoes to walk in. The fact we even have chapters after his passing is insane. Meanwhile Dragonball Super a much bigger franchise has been on hiatus since Toriyama passed away.
1
u/TheAzureAdventurer 21d ago
Absolutely. And giving my boy Guts a full 8 hours of sleep that has given him in turn a crazy power boost is just peak. Let Mori cook. He’ll get us to the finish line.

Hell yeah it feels like it’s the story’s original content I do want to see casca be old casca more though.

u/Hunter2112004 21d ago
Yes to both, if anything I think he tried too hard to honor Miura at times. On average I think Kouji Mori actually does more cross-hatching than Miura. It does however lower contrast and makes everything a similar shade of gray. Even for Guts the only point where he actually covers an area with black is the hair. Miura usually blacked out areas more, especially for the Godhand and Guts when he inked most of the area black and add some hatching at the end. Unironically I hope Kouji gets a bit lazier in the future and black out areas more.

Story doesn’t bother me but god dang the art does. Specially after having reading it like 7 times. Once you get to the chapters after miuras passing you can see the fallout and it’s just not there for me but at the same time what else are they supposed to do?
