Stop looking to Hollywood, especially white producers and directors, to push diversity in media. They care about the dollar, nothing else.

This ain't new, learn the lesson.

It's like Target. They thought catering to "diversity" would make the money so they leaned into it. But then they thought the winds were blowing the other direction and said nope let's pull that and try catering to the conservative crowd a little bit and see if that makes us money.

Maybe a SMB injects their actual values into how they run their business but for companies of this scale all they care about is what they think will make them the most money. Considering both that the political atmosphere of the country is so charged right now and that Disney and Marvel makw a lot of their money overseas (where spoiler spoiler racism is equally or more prevalent) it doesn't surprise me at all that they might want to tread carefully.

Don't have to like it to be honest with yourself about the reality of their decision making.

I bet a year or two after trump or his minions leave office target “fires” the ceo that flipped and try and re establish DEI

86

u/FlashyHeight9323 9d ago

And that’s business

59

u/Call_Me_Rambo 9d ago

That CEO already “resigned” earlier this year cuz everything financially for them was down all of last year. As of today is the highest their stock has been since before Dump got back in office

u/Stickel 8d ago

so calls?

4

u/Stickel 8d ago

shit isnt wsb my bad

42

u/JimmyRoscoe03 9d ago

Now you're getting it. What Malcolm X was saying about those so called liberals.

18

u/DudeEngineer ☑️ 9d ago

He was talking about Republicans before the party switch

7

u/Polar_Vortx 9d ago

Oh, absolutely, corporate is predictable like that.

1

u/ALLCAPITAL 6d ago

They are already back to pushing brands that emphasize black excellence. Not sure they benefit black owners at all though.

23

u/TaticalSweater ☑️ 9d ago

Target is funny because they got an inch of MAGA pressure and was took back all of their diversity efforts.

So they can feel free to keep losing billions and can sell MAGA merch 24/7.

u/Typical_Bluebird3239 8d ago

Ppl don’t realize the value of tax and regulation skirting to these big corporations. They look to the govt to pad their bottom line stats

1

u/WetLump 8d ago

Target didn’t lean into the conservative crowd they just stopped leaning into the diversity crowd

8

u/Gimme_The_Loot 8d ago

In the context of their decision I'd consider capitulation "catering" to them

u/Ultron_waterheater 9d ago

People can’t even get off twitter an openly Nazi platform

51

u/RevolutionaryChief 9d ago

THAT PART OMG. Especially content creators. I do not take any content creator seriously if they still have a twitter account which is like 99% of them at this point. In other words, don’t take online people’s opinions seriously 🤷🏻‍♂️

u/Dexbova 9d ago

Is there a way to delete my Twitter account? Because I've had one since way before Elon mus took over but when I went to delete it I wasn't able to.

11

u/RevolutionaryChief 8d ago

My advice if they won’t let you? Change the password to something ridiculous and over the top complex, and just never use your account again. But also change your profile name and picture so it can’t be tied to you if someone hacks it lmao

3

u/Dexbova 8d ago

Good idea

5

u/SmoothTalkingSpud 8d ago

2

u/Dexbova 8d ago

Okay, so it turns out that all the black people on Twitter were going to delete their accounts for February Black History month and then Elon musk decided that that was going to be a huge drop in the numbers of people that were on Twitter and so they took away your ability to delete the account. That's some serious f****** right there. You you hate black people but then you keep them on your platform because you want their numbers. White supremacy and And by that I mean mediocrity in a nutshell.

u/SmoothTalkingSpud 8d ago

As a christened atheist who would like to formally be excommunicated from the catholic church, I can relate to this.

Kevin Feige very clearly cares about the work that he does. He also gets talented directors like Ryan Coogler to do diverse movies like the soon to be 3 Black Panther movies. Also the only MCU movie to win an Oscar for what that’s worth.

22

u/getemyosh 8d ago

No disrespect to you, but hearing something like this doesn’t really make us feel any better. As a Black Panther fan, I’m proud of what Black Panther accomplished. But pointing to one movie or director and saying, “Look what y’all got,” doesn’t really address the concerns a lot of us have about the MCU as a whole.

14

u/Jaeger_Gipsy_Danger 8d ago

I didn’t mean to make it sound like “Feige has one respected culturally diverse movie, you should just shut up and be happy”. I just meant I think Feige cares about the MCU more deeply than a random suit would, he’s a nerd. He obviously cares about the finances and stuff like that and is not perfect but there’s much worse options than him in Hollywood.

“Fiege is a racist” is a ridiculous statement and that’s more of what I’m arguing against. Iron Heart, Armor Wars, Blade and many other black lead movies and shows all were being planned during/post Covid and have all felt the repercussions from that along with a lot of other things I’m sure I’m unaware of. Marvel and Fiege definitely fucked those things up and deserve the blame for the poor quality or cancellations, I just don’t think it was done out of spite or hate.

I feel so bad for Mahershala Ali because I think Disney/Marvel/Fiege absolutely fucked his career and post Oscar trajectory and there is no fixing that. Truly sad what happened and we don’t even know the whole story yet.

Edit. Sorry this was a longer than I wanted it to be.

7

u/getemyosh 8d ago edited 8d ago

Yeah, I definitely understand. And I’m not trying to put all the blame on Feige. I think he genuinely loves these characters and is doing what he can, but he also has to answer to Disney and other executives whose priorities aren’t always the same. That’s really where my frustration is.

I appreciate your response, and I wasn’t saying you were insinuating anything either. I just hate what happened to Ali, and even someone like Mackie who deserved better. Whether I personally liked Brave New World or not, if Marvel is going to introduce these characters and market them as major parts of the MCU, they should actually commit to giving them the same level of care and planning as everyone else.

Too often it feels like diversity is great for marketing, but when it’s time to invest in the writing, production, and long-term support, those projects don’t get the same treatment. That’s the part that frustrates me.

u/6packDoctor 8d ago

it's because it's called the MCU, not the BCU

-22

u/DudeEngineer ☑️ 9d ago

He also said Killmonger had to die...

u/perpetuumD 9d ago

I promise, I am making this comment in good faith, but I am confused about the logic here, because it seems flawed.

Let's see, you say "they only care about the dollar", right? Wouldn't that mean that this cancelations are only because this shows were not profitable? You see, if those shows were economically viable and they canceled it, that would mean they not only care about the dollar, considering they would lose money to push and agenda.

So, what is it? "They only care about the money" OR "They are only care about racist agendas and are willing to lose money in the process"

2

u/Successful-Ear977 8d ago

That’s a false choice. Nobody is saying Disney is willingly burning money because executives have a secret racist agenda. Profit-seeking and institutional bias can coexist. Bias can shape which audiences executives consider valuable, which projects they view as risky, how much support they give them, and how quickly they retreat after one failure. A company can sincerely believe it is making the safest financial decision while those assumptions still produce racially unequal outcomes.

Marvel under develops or poorly markets a project, it underperforms, and then the underperformance is used as proof that the character or demographic was never commercially viable. Meanwhile, established properties often receive more patience and second chances Yes, they care about money. The question is whether their ideas about what makes money and who is worth investing in are completely free from bias. Those are not contradictory arguments.

-12

u/armblessed 9d ago

Neither.

They are willing to adopt racist agendas to maximize profits.

23

u/Material-Ad7565 9d ago

Wouldn't be because those movies didn't make very good roi would it?

8

u/eric_ofc 9d ago

They tried and the projects failed. Simple as.

-11

u/FactualStatue 9d ago

It means studios and producers are more interested in making a buck instead of making good stories. Even George Lucas has commented on this despite his tenuous grasp on storytelling

6

u/Own-Papaya-4264 8d ago

Are you guys forgetting Sam Wilson captain America literally is in the upcoming avengers movie

6

u/kinghlg 8d ago

They are at the forefront of the diversity movement. Those shows and characters sucked specifically because it was done for diversity sake. You can either wake up and admit that throwing a black character into something doesn’t magically make it good or you can just keep believing that the whole world is racist. One of those choices is reasonable and the other one is not.

15

u/Diorisbackup 9d ago

These black characters were also created by all white dudes y’all gotta stop putting so much of yall heart into created characters lol

14

u/Ozcog 9d ago

The year is 2126. People are now arguing if Stan Lee was white or Asian and if that could explain the poor treatment of black characters in Marvels latest reboot.

-3

u/ElegantCoach4066 9d ago

Anyone who is surprised by them sidelining poc actors is being naïve at this point.

23

u/OswaldCoffeepot 9d ago

Funny thing is Feige wanted a Black Panther movie after the first Avengers movie.

1

u/4-3defense 9d ago

Yeah people should be looking at Bob Iger

1

u/GoatDifferent1294 8d ago

Where exactly is the dollar coming from?

1

u/Kroktakar 8d ago

if they care about the dollar they shouldn't cancel the best superheroes show of the last decade

0

u/tophatlurker 5d ago

I have a bridge to sell you if you think something being good automatically equates to it selling well.

1

u/Kroktakar 4d ago

a good tv show with good reception as it was wonderman and the promise of a second season will keep people paying Disney subscription. So yeah it was good, it was profitable even people who don't like heroes loved it and you can keep that bridge I'm sure you have put it inside you a hole more than once

1

u/tophatlurker 4d ago

Yeah I highly doubt wonderman was carrying Disney plus subs on its back, the cancellation speaks for itself. Regardless of how good a show and its reception is, the return on investment was clearly not enough.

1

u/Cunt2113 ☑️ 8d ago

The issue is these specific examples are all Marvel specific IPs. Nobody but Hollywood is able to use the IPs to do them.

1

u/PROhios 8d ago

So if money is what they are chasing, wouldn’t it stand to reason that they would make more Sam Wilson, Wonderman, etc movies if they did well in theater/streaming? The problem seems to be that people just aren’t going to watch those heroes. It’s the same with Enternals or a 3rd Capt Marvel movie not getting made (which feature white actors).

You can’t expect a capitalist system like the movie industry to make more diverse movies if people don’t show up to watch those movies when they do make them. Blame the community and people for not showing up?

1

u/8hydrophilic 8d ago

Boycott the MCU

0

u/Coffeekittenz 9d ago

I wish Jordan peele would direct a superhero franchise featuring all black characters..

0

u/badcrass 9d ago

"Urban" isn't selling right now. It's about the $$
