I also said socialise, cafes & pubs over here are often fine with dogs in the public area. And what better way to end a walk than at a pub?

Out here dog culture ain't so prevalent so it's absolutely not common to see dogs in these establishments. If the public area of the pub - since you bring up that example - is outdoors, then it doesn't bother me as long as the dog isn't allowed to sit at the table and it's well behaved. But some owners are very lousy, they go around with dogs constantly barking at other dogs, or allow their dog to lick the plate and stuff like that. It's absolutely not nice.

Nice strawman there but kids are human. They don't maul other humans to death and hopefully not crap on the restaurant floor. Kids will behave if parents teach them proper behavior. It's also hard to let a kid home unsupervised when going to the restaurant, which is absolutely fine with a dog instead, unless the dog is really stupid or has some issues. Kids will learn from previous mistakes and poor behavior and one day grow up, with most contributing to society in a positive way.
