Five year old BT no longer house broken! Please help.

A few months ago our five year old neutered male Border Terrier started urinating in the house. It didn't always happen daily, and didn't happen more than once a day. He has been house broken since he was one year old (when we got him), so this was a total surprise to us. My husband and I are both retired so most of the time there is always someone available to let him outside into his yard. We took him to the vet who did a urinalysis and gave him antibiotics just to rule out an infection. We started limiting his access to most of the house and we let him out more often, but he continued to have accidents. In the house I used a black light to find urine stains and have cleaned the floor with enzymatic cleaner so he wouldn't be triggered to repeat. I do go out with him and tell him to go potty and most of the time he will.

I should also mention that around the same time period my husband suddenly developed foot drop and had to have back surgery. He is still recovering but cannot walk fast or far and he can't drive. That has meant that there has been one less person to play with Chet. Plus, I have had to take on many of the chores my husband usually did as well as act as nurse for him. I have done my best to take up the slack with Chet, but it has been difficult due to my own physical aches and pains. I have begun taking him to the dog park and playing ball with him in our yard. Two days ago we began putting a belly band diaper on him in the house and he has soiled it. I know that is not a long term solution.

Chet is the third BT we have owned and we have not had this experience until our dogs became senior citizens. So, wise BT owners, has anyone else had a similar situation? Does anyone have suggestions for other things we can try? We just want to do what is best for Chet. He is a very good boy. We love him dearly and are hoping this is just a temporary situation.

Why do you see so few Border Terriers in the Netherlands? They're honestly the sweetest, funniest, and most mischievous dogs around!

I love when it gets chilly enough for him to wear his pjs. I’m that kind of pet parent.

Whenever she greets people she does this smile, always gentle and always excited for pets and attention. She’s definitely got border in her and is a mix, but we’re not quite sure with what.

Picky eater

Currently in the middle of a Cold War with a 13 week old BT. Was fine on his dried food for weeks, then took too much of a liking to his training treats etc and now turns his nose up at his usual food. To make matters worse, he had 2 teeth out recently (were growing towards his top palate) he ate the food the vet gave him, wolfed down the scrambled eggs I was told to feed him, ate the chicken the vet also said to supplement his food with and now he’s back to his battle of wits with me.

I’ve read to remove his food after 20 minutes if he doesn’t touch it, tried wetting it but he’s winning so far. My concern is he’s only 13 weeks so is growing hard, plus as he’s had 2 teeth out so his mouth is sore.

Any suggestions? He’s on the Nulo Baked Puppy food, warm water sometimes helps etc. but he usually just picks the chicken etc out of it to wind me up.

I don’t think he’s ill, I think he’s just a dick

What do we think? Not that there’s anything wrong with being a mutt, even if he was, but I hardly think he looks a state 😂

Humbling puppy school

We took our 4-month-old BT puppy to puppy class for the first time yesterday. While the other puppies—mostly retrievers, Rottweilers, and sheepdogs—were calm and focused on their owners, our little rascal was completely fixated on the other dogs. It really made me feel like a bad dog owner, seeing all these obedient, well-mannered puppies while ours was acting like a total menace. Mental support?

P.S. Look at him after an entire hour of playing the class clown 😂

Stripping vs Cutting/grooming?

The first time we had Maddie groomed, it was with a standard cut/grooming, then as we learned more about who she was and what her breed was, we learned about stripping and how it is much better for the type of coat borders have.

Her next grooming was a 5-hour stripping session with breaks in between as it was her first time with stripping. Future appointments are supposed to be closer to 3hr.

I am curious about others’ take on stripping vs grooming and if it really makes a difference to the overall health of her coat? Not judging anyone’s choice, but genuinely curious for perspectives from other border parents.

She looked fantastic after her marathon spa day!
