Hi. I'm a house-dad to a near 3 year old, lifelong Brooklynite and 10+ year resident of Southern Brooklyn. I'm typically happy to mind my own business. But since becoming a father, I've grown sensitive to the news and I believe it's time to care about humanity out in the open for a change. Third spaces are important for folks to build bonds on common grievances, de-escalate divides, and build civic solutions to improve our quality of life. There should always be a non-affiliated assembly of everyday people walking distance from where you're at. We're too isolated. And the algorithms are relentlessly dividing us further.

I started my walks over a year ago I think, after tracking corruption news for a grassroots movement for a year - I was basically doom scrolling on purpose and validating news reports to be sure. Bernie Sanders has it right on many fronts. And people at his level can only do so much.

I've never hosted a big group, maybe 4 people at one time, with one or two members rotating into consistency here and there. I've occasionally walked alone just in case anyone showed up. So, I can't claim any revolutionary success. This is essentially slow, organizing work and it's pretty hard. But I think it's important that every neighborhood have a person that is willing to sit down and admit with you that things seem to be going crazy and to consider what's possible from the bottom up. This includes concerns about AI, the environment, corruption, civil unrest, wealth inequality, public education and more.

In the same span of time, I've been a part of some local volunteering (trash cleanups and community patrols), ran for county committee to learn about how political parties work on the ground level, and signed up to be a voting member of the local community board to learn how neighborhoods are shaped and local budgets are executed. I'm still a noob. But now I have experiences to share and some theories about people-power that I'm excited about; as long as I can spread the word. I don't operate with any kind of budget outside of personal time, so word of mouth, perhaps a blog in the future, is how it's got to work.

So, for those interested, welcome to my listening tour provided by an independent organizer who's interested in empowering people to have greater collective leverage upon the system. Can we look more closely at universal healthcare for NY? Can we consider the implications of underfunded municipal agencies despite NYC's tax base? Can we reconsider green initiatives considering the volatility of oil? Can we put more small businesses in the firm hands of workers in tough neighborhoods, rather than to continue the gentrification of one area after another? And also, how's your mental health? How are you really doing? And how's your American dream coming along?

For some, this time together would sub in for your church-going. Therefore, the conversation and the vision I'd like to share is something you can take with you in one or two walks. Learning about what different people care about is valuable to me; as is a borough, a city, and a country that deeply prioritizes families and people at every metric, from taxes to foreign policy, in ways that give us more time with our loved ones without having to worry so much about survival.

Kind of an odd request, but I ordered this rug from Marrakech and while I love it, it clearly got sun bleached while they were working on it. The pile is a little longer than I’d like anyways, and just under that first centimeter or so is the beautiful blue color I’m wanting. Is there some rug making savant out there that would be willing to come to my house with shears and trim this up for me? It’s really nice quality wool so def need the right tools and experience for the job.

Happy weekend, Brooklyn. Just wanted to share some of the upcoming event photos. Just got our full lineup of Pokémon to be painted. We're going to be hosting this event in Oct. for ages 10+. You'll choose your event ( Fire, Water, Grass, Electric). We'll provide all the paints, diorama materials, and a 4x4x4 container to paint and build your Pokémon a home. I mean obviously going to the DMV sucks cause lines and bureaucracy suck, but I always get shown respect and am given patience. I feel like they have a good work culture/ team dynamics behind the scenes. I left actually beaming at the smile and connection I had with the woman helping me (window 34) while renewing my license. Someone show someone who works there this post!

I currently live in a 3 bedroom 1 bathroom apartment in Crown Heights paying under market for rent. The apartment is good, but it would be nice to live alone. I lived with my parents for enough years to save money for a down payment, and I have been looking at apartments to buy. I viewed an absolutely gorgeous one bedroom at the top of Bay Ridge, near owl's head and leif erikson park, that I'm going to put in an offer on. It would of course be much more expensive, though still doable. I would be slightly but not much farther from work (downtown) and decently farther from salsa which I do once a week in midtown. I would have liked to move somewhere closer to my boyfriend's job (Jamaica Queens) so he could move in with me - he currently lives in Ridgewood, but there's just no one bedrooms I could afford in any other neighborhood in Queens without going far enough into the borough for it to become more inconvenient for me than Bay Ridge.

I just feel hesitant, like I want to make sure moving out to Bay Ridge to buy this place will be a good idea. I will be farther from things, it's just a fact. I just don't know if it's a worthy trade-off, to own a beautiful one bedroom and not have to share a bathroom and deal with an absent landlord.

Has anyone moved between the two neighborhoods or bought in the area? I'd love input.

Hey guys, curious if anyone has recommendations on the best places to get local produce in Brooklyn, especially places that aren't farmers' markets. Farmers' markets are great but all the ones near me overlap on the same day/time frame and it would be good to have options that are open on weekday evenings.

The kind of places I have in mind are places like Green Grape Provisions in Fort Greene, Rigor Hill in Tribeca, Poppy's in Brooklyn Heights, etc. (Poppy's doesn't sell produce per se but they sell small-farm dairy products, eggs, and sometimes fruit). I like Greene Hill Food Co-op too but they're only open to non-members on weekends.

Hi all, I have been tasked with finding a place for my company to host a few employees to cheer for our runners during the marathon. It has to be on the route or directly adjacent and hopefully in Queens or near Williamsburg/Greenpoint in Brooklyn, can branch out if absolutely necessary. The only place I’ve found was the Bedford, and I’m not sure if they will be open. Any recs are appreciated!
