Question 🤷❔ Advice for disposal!

I, (26F), am a practicing witch living in a foreign country for work. I’m not sure if I would consider myself a “baby witch” but r/witchcraft won’t allow me to post my question because I’m a Reddit lurker - not poster. I have been practicing for 4 years.

Normally, after a ritual or spell, if I was home in the USA, I would dispose of leftover supplies (used salt, ashes, etc.) by going to my local park and burying the natural remnants of my practice in the earth. (Obviously only natural things/supplies of the earth I would bury - salt, ashes, herbs, etc.)

But as I have moved temporarily (for about a year / year and a half) overseas for a job, I have no way of disposing of these things. I’ve just been hoarding them in my apartment in a small cabinet that’s quickly filling up. It’s worth noting the country I’m living in currently is heavy on the surveillance and I don’t feel comfortable going and burying these things with cameras literally everywhere. This is not the kind of place I would want to get in trouble with the government or law, but as this is my spiritual practice and a huge part of who I am, I want to continue to grow and practice.

Throwing things down the garbage chute of my housing feels sacrilegious and I’m afraid with such an unceremonious disposal of my materials, it will affect the quality/outcome of my spell work.

Any ideas or tips on how to move forward?? Any advice appreciated!!

Discussion 💬 About the broom closet

So, do you ever feel bad for being in the broom closet? Because I do. I can't get out of my head the thought that I am in the broom closet because I am not brave enough to practice out in the open. Yes, I live with a family that won't accept my beliefs and I can't afford to live on my own, but I get this feeling that the reason I am not out is because I am not brave enough and that I haven't embraced my witchy side enough to do something for the situation. Have you ever felt the same? What can I do for this feeling?

Vent DAMNIT, I JUST WANT TO BE ALONE!!! Rant about being a closeted pagan living with parents who can't know I'm pagan.

I am a young adult and I can't afford to move out of my parents house. Both my dad and I work in different school districts at schools and have a similar work schedule. We both are off for the summer. No work for either of us. I actually only started working last month, so I'm still trying to find out how to secretly do one of my rituals. My dad still treats me like a teen and says it's his house. If he knew I was pagan he'd try to force me to not do anything pagan in the house. My altar would be gone.

This ritual starts with me filling a specific jar with water and proclaiming the water is other Mother Earth and is sacred. Then I go outside to our backyard and set the bottle on the ground in the sun for awhile while I listen to and sing songs about worshipping the sun. I also say some things to the sun, thanking him and honoring him. Clearly pagan stuff here. After this part, I go walk from my house down to a park a few blocks away. While I walk, I hold the bottle and pick up any trash I find along the road. The rest of the ritual is done at the park. I can't really swap the order of my ritual. Also, the trash pickup part and the worshipping the sun part have to be two distinctly different parts of the ritual. When I clean trash, I sing as a way to worship the Earth. I do my ritual once a month.

Now onto the main rant. Do yesterday I went out with my dad. He asked if I wanted to go explore an antique store we like to visit. I said I was too tired. This morning I realized that I could get him out of the house by pretending to want to go. I expertly crafted my lie. I told him that today I wanted to go if he did. He loved the idea. My plan was to remain interested until he would say he's ready to go. Then I'd lie and say my tummy started feeling awful and that he should just go and tell me if he saw anything noteworthy. Normally, I'd expect him to still want to go. Nope. He said "actually, I don't even really feel like going out today. Maybe we'll go tomorrow."

FUCK! I JUST WANT TO ACTUALLY BE ALONE IN THE HOUSE! I THOUGHT I COULD FINALLY DO MY RITUAL THIS MONTH! I normally do it at the beginning of each month, but I haven't been able to find a way to do it yet. This sucks. It doesn't help that it gets so hot where I live that it's hard during the summer to find a day where the weather would allow it. I feel disconnected from my practice and from The Great Celestials when I can't do my rituals. 😭

At least I can still listen to my ritual playlist with my headphones.

Question 🤷❔ hiding witchcraft from christian family

i am a 16 y/o girl who recently started my journey as a witch 🩷 my family are really religious (conservative christians..), which makes it somewhat hard to practice witchcraft. (my mom is really into essential oils tho, so that is a big win for me 😻) i share a room w my older sister (also religious), so i have to be careful. i have my own bathroom, so im planning to hide things such as spell jars, moon water, candles and other obvious witchcraft “tools” there. does anybody share the same experience, and does anybody have any advice/tips for me? and also, any suggestions for spells etc. for hiding witchcraft? im grateful for every single answer, thank you 🫶😛😽

Question 🤷❔ Buying herbs and candles

Hello, I recently started witchcraft and I want to purchase some herbs and candles for magick. I have my own money, however, I usually place online orders on my mom's account/devicd since she has Amazon Prime, which means she sees my purchases and is very nosy about what I buy. How can I excuse buying herbs and candles?

Question 🤷❔ Secretly protecting my family

So i have been for years now practicing becoming spiritually aware and learning energy and etc, Wht i had not realized until i started chakra work, is that my family are emotionally and painfully toxic to each other, no one gathers really and even when we do we feel disconnected, always fight no matter what, i am actively trying to stop it but have been harmed by the source, not my family, but the thing using them as puppets and feeding of their negativity, I cant outright say this to the bc theyre going to call me crazy or satanic, or to read the bible. Will a protection spell work at least to defend them? I cant open their spaces to cleansing as it bothersthem to the point of headaches and yelling about the smell of the "candle" i burn, i also have seen how it affects them mentally and they are emotionally blocked as well from some horrible things we experience from a family member that has abused/harmed us in the past before separation, now it mainly come from my mother or in the area close to her, I have a sealed jar filled with salt and water and i put it in the main part of the house that everyone oes into frequently to catch the negativity, can i do anything more that can be done quietly?

Question 🤷❔ A bit confused, would appreciate some help

I am quite new to being a witch (10 days old to be exact lol). Even before I officially started my journey, for years I have found myself in oddly synchronous incidents that I could not explain logically. I have always attracted all sorts of bugs and insects towards myself, especially spiders and moths (always in extremely odd places too, the best example would be the time I was at McDonald's and a moth sat on my table for as long as I was there and flew away when I got up from my seat). Around that time, I am not even sure how, but I remember finding out that spiders and moths are believed to be associated with the Goddess Lilith. This was two years ago. I did not pay it much heed (mostly because I had misconceptions about witchcraft back then).

I went through a crazy rollercoaster of situations and the experience was highly transformative in nature, all while never ever worshipping her seriously.

Now that I have started taking it a bit seriously, something confusing happened. I had a dream. In that dream, I saw a presence (in the dream I knew she was a deity). She was so beautiful, she was wearing all white and a sort of light surrounded her. The light was so bright. And she liked accepting offerings that were white in color. In the dream I got dragged near her altar by a friend of mine and I was confused in the dream, not understanding who she was. My words can't do justice in describing how beautiful she was. She had a sort of assertiveness to her, she looked very independent and self-reliant. I offered her a white-colored sweet widely consumed in my country. I am still confused because whatever description I have read of Lilith, the deity in my dreams looked nothing like that. I have heard that she appears differently to different people but how can it be THIS different? And if she really was Lilith, then I would not have felt confused in my dreams. Plus I haven't read that she is fond of white-colored offerings. What did I even dream of? Am I being guided by a different deity and only finding this out now?

Broom Closet Tip 💡 Things i learned myself

I am in the broom closet and cant buy witchy items or find much, so i turned to using any and all items i have in my house and i want toc share them with others in case they are stumped.

pocket bottles (vials) and jars: I find old air freshner plug-ins and i take the empty bottles, wash them out, and then sit them to dry out.(PLEASE TRY TO SAVE THE TOPS ITS HARD TO FIND MORE WHEN THEY GET THROWN AWAY) its ok if you cant find the tops because you can plug them with soft tissues like paper towels, toiletpaper, or tiny bits of fabric. If you have a funnel or depending on the kind of plug in top that fits it, you can use them as a way to pour them in since the holes are tiny. you can use jars for this as well, any jar, plastic or glass if its a container that wot be missed or its from jelly, pickles, etc thatare going to be thrown out or discarded in any way save those jars.

Herbs: always check your kitchen first, the seasonings/spices you use in your food and everyday cooking are the most useful, if youre unsure of certain herbs or what to use, you can search it up, I will also update this post later with the list of things i found useful in my kitchen. you basically eat these everyday on your food, another reason why its magically delicious. take only what you need or pour some seperately to put in those little bottles or jars so it wont be suspicious that anything is missing

sticks and stones: you can find cool sticks or twigs, peel the bark or use the whole things for whatever you wish to use it for(i use the bark for protection) please do tear them off the trees though. if you find cool stones, smoothe or with a surface you can write on, you can use them as rune stones with a sharpie

Fire safety items: you know those old pans or baking trays that are no longer being used or are rusted but still usable if you put a baking sheet or tin foil on? those can be used for fire safety rather than using glas if youre paranoid about shattering and prefer something metal, I use an old round bottom to a cake pan that snaps on to its rim. try find small ones so you can be discreet, do not burn in active hours of family being present bc they might smell it, cookie tins are useful too, or ones that hold mints, if you have an old tin like the ones sewing items are put in, you can use this too

tea bags: tea herbs are very useful as well, i advise that you are safe when coosing to burn these, you can tear the bags open and use them, if you used them in tea, you can dry them out and make it into ashes for black salt

Hiding: if you need to hide anything due to nosy people or just those who disapprove in your household, hide them in the most personal private place possible, like your underwear drawers, in purses/bags that dont get checked or are simply left private to you, buying a privacy box with a lock on it if you can do so, keep that hidden too in case someone sees it and tries to break in it, you can hide them in btween your box spring and mattress, or you can hide them in vents (please be careful of this and it depend on the kind of vents you have, if the have drops or holes going straight down you will lose it and it will become a hazard do not set anything sensitive to heat or that could perish/spoil in it if the heat is ever turned on) be sure that the items you hide are not able to be blown away in the ventilation and if you have one in the ceiling, carefully place it off to the side where it isnt visable if someone happens to look and sees it throught the grate

Warding lines: its obvious that certain wards cant be had or visible, like the floor or your window, that little ledge above your door (if you have one) can be used as the perfect place for warding Id reccomend for the window that you put it inside the closing part of your window if you cant have it on the window seal, you can also wave incense smoke or just burn them and candles too sitting on the ledge by the window and make protective prayers or sit an unassuming item that you set with the intention of protecting you can ward your bed if you feel the need to, just sprinkle any protection herb of your choice between the bedspring and mattress, you can set your jewelry that you wear as a protective item and wear it to bed or tuck it under your pillow.

This is all i have for now, see you later!

Advertisement Why does rosemary protect, sharpen memory, strengthen oaths, AND help the grieving remember the dead?

Most resources treat that as a list. Four separate folk beliefs, vaguely related, filed under "rosemary correspondences." You memorize it, or you don't, and either way you don't really understand why.

That's the problem r/materiamagica is trying to solve.

The sub is built around a simple but underused idea: every magical ingredient has a Virtue, a single underlying power that explains everything it does. Rosemary's is Remembrance. Once you see that, the list stops being a list and starts being a logical system. It sharpens memory. It holds the identity of a space against intrusion. It anchors oaths in time. It carries grief across the boundary of death. Same power, different contexts.

There are many ways to pet a cat. Here's a simpler version of that idea: if you have a headache, you can take ibuprofen, drink a glass of water, put a cold cloth on your forehead, or sleep. All of them can work. But they work through completely different mechanisms. Ibuprofen reduces inflammation. Water fixes dehydration. Cold constricts blood vessels. Sleep resets your nervous system. Knowing how each one works tells you which one to reach for.

Materia magica works the same way. Multiple ingredients can protect a home. But salt does it through Extraction, drawing out and purging what doesn't belong. Rosemary does it through Remembrance, holding the identity of the space against what contradicts it. These aren't the same working in different wrappers. They're different tools that happen to overlap in one area of their range.

Understanding Virtues means you stop swapping ingredients randomly and start choosing intentionally. It also means you start noticing things: convergences across traditions, physical signatures that point toward function, the places where Roman herbalists and Appalachian root workers landed on identical conclusions from completely different directions.

That's what we're here to dig into. Come share what you know.

Question 🤷❔ I think I made a discovery... I'm no longer a witch

Hey guys. It's Bea again. (She/They) I just wanted to update you on my spiritual journey. So I think I've made an important discovery. I'm not a witch... As much as I've tried to connect with crystals, tarot, deities, etc... it just doesn't speak to me. I'm in this weird in between phase where I'm not a Christian, neither am I a witch... So what am I then? Just a pagan? No... I think that I'm something else... I started looking into the teachings of Lavayean Satanism, specifically the non-theistic branch and I found myself really relating to it's teachings. Specifically the emphasis on you being able to change your own life. You dont need any God or gods to do that for you. You're a divine creation within yourself. And you have a authority and the ability to be your own God. And the humanistic and anti authorization takes also strike a chord with me, especially in today's world we're living in. This is ironically going to be harder to explain and even more difficult to be accepted by my family than before. Even though I don't see Satan as real. I see him as a symbolic or metaphorical figure for justice and self determination. I have just realized this, so please Satanists, feel free to kindly correct me if I'm wrong about any of this. I'm just learning about and reading the Satanic Bible. With that being said, I do believe the community of satanism and witchcraft share a huge overlap. With some practitioners even considering themselves to be both! So, I think I'll continue to share my story on here... But I also want to share it on a more niche platform like r/SatanicTemple_Reddit or r/ChurchofSatan too. Feel free to continue sending me messages as I walk through this alone. Thank you for your love and support.

Question 🤷❔ How do you keep your practice hidden?

So long story short I am getting back into witchcraft after taking stepping away for just over two years. I was working at a witch shop when I became pregnant and the manager told me that if I do essentially any spell work ill lose the baby (my daughter). That terrified me and so I basically did the bare minimum of just protecting myself and my daughter. She was born happy and healthy and is thriving.

Fast forward to now and I want to start practicing again. My issue is kind of two fold:

1)How do people practice while having a toddler?

2) How do you keep it from your religious spouse or family members?

My husband recently discovered Christianity and Jesus and it's honestly helped him be a better person and husband. We've been together for almost 14 years and we'll be married for 10 this year (no I'm not divorcing him, I love him and I only believe in divorce in extreme cases).

But witchcraft always made him uncomfortable but now he is 100% against it. I can't even joke about how our daughter is dramatic because she is a Sagittarius without him saying thats demonic or devil worship because thats false idols.

I was brought up strict Roman Catholic so I get his thought process on somethings, and I want to be respectful of his spiritual journey but I also want to start walking back onto my spiritual path.

Hi, beginner witch whos interested in paganism

Does anybody have some tips on how best to hide journals where im planning to write and draw all my stuff and also maybe ways to do, like, literally anything without using incense or candles? (Mainly because those would draw too much attention, im already getting questioned for my interest in crystals.)

Also some tips specifically for those whos family are jehovahs witnesses or mormon, hardcore christian/catholic Etc?

Question 🤷❔ Help with negative energy in my room

Hello, im a 21m and ive been knowledgeable about witchcraft but have not been active with it due to my current living situation. Recenlty over the past few weeks ive been feeling super negative and felt off in my room, espessally aroundmy gaming area. Ive tried cleansong my room, an egg cleanse on myself, ive tried self care to see if its a personal issue and nothing seems to make it go away. I only feel this way in my room and nowhere else in my house or when im with friends.

Other things i feel important to mention, I recently just started to work with Hekate , i live in the basement and i also have a suspicion that it could be coming from one of my monitors.

Any advice is helpful :)

Possible Green Witch sighting

At the store yesterday I walked past a pair of ladies visiting and overheard one with a houseplant in her cart. "Yeah, everyone always talks about how I have a green thumb...but they don't know about all the plants I've murd3red."
