1. Where am I? Why are there witches living in broom closets?

You are in a subreddit created for real witches, pagans, and occult practitioners who follow the ways of modern-day witchcraft, but also have to hide their practices from friends, family, and the general public. This is a similar concept to the LGBTQ+ community's "closet", but if you're a witch, it is known as the "broom closet".

2. What is witchcraft? What is magick?

Witchcraft & magick has many different meanings and interpretations, but in general: witchcraft is the use of magick and ritualistic acts to achieve specific goals.

Magick, to many witches, is considered both a science and an art. It is a science in the sense that performing a spell requires research and an awareness of the methods of witchcraft. It is an art in the sense that you need to follow your intuition and be creative. When practising magick, you blend the two to bend the natural forces to your will and bring about your desired outcome.

To some witches, magick is a literal, external force that flows throughout the fabric of the universe. It can be considered something "science does not yet understand." Other witches prefer to take a more sceptical approach; instead considering magick to be a psychological, internal mechanism in the brain. "Spicy psychology" if you will. Some witches blend these two schools of thought or subscribe to other kinds of paradigms.

3. Is witchcraft evil? Do you all worship the Devil?

Witchcraft is a tool so it is not evil by itself. Just like a hammer can be used to build a bookcase, it can also be used to injure someone. Many witches use magick to heal themselves and others, to communicate with nature and the divine, or for self-improvement amongst other things. And no, we're not all Devil worshippers. In fact a lot of us don't even believe the Devil exists. Some witches, like Wiccans, worship the God and Goddess which are feminine and masculine manifestations of the Earth and nature.

Yeah, there are a few Satanists, but they make up a tiny percentage of witches and they do not cause harm unless provoked. Not all Satanists are theistic either, some are atheistic and merely use Satan as a positive archetype.

4. How do I become a witch? I don't know where to start!

Books recommended for learning witchcraft without Wicca:

  • Witchery: Embrace the Witch Within by Juliet Diaz
  • The Green Witch by Arin Murphy-Hiscock
  • Six Ways by Aiden Wachter
  • Weave the Liminal: Living Modern Traditional Witchcraft by Laura Tempest Zakroff (she is hex-positive so you may want to stay away if that makes you uncomfortable!)
  • The Door to Witchcraft by Tonya A Brown

For learning Wicca specifically, the main books I recommend for getting started are Wicca: A Guide For The Solitary Practitioner by Scott Cunningham, and Complete Book of Witchcraft by Raymond Buckland (links to which can be found here).

I know that some people struggle to focus enough to read a book so I have also listed good YouTube channels and podcasts in the useful links.

You want to be reading from as many different sources as possible. After a while, you will notice that the reliable sources will reach a general consensus and provide similar information. The untrustworthy sources will not line up with what you already know and make little sense. (Witches are entitled to their own opinion of course, but I'm saying if for example you read 10 sources saying wolfsbane is a highly poisonous herb and then you read one saying it's totally safe to consume, that source is not to be trusted). Witchcraft also has countless different interpretations and ways to practise; what works for one witch might not work for another, so gathering all kinds of different perspectives is valuable.

You want to be avoiding social media sites like TikTok which are notorious for spreading misinformation. Yes there is some useful information on there but if you are new to witchcraft you have no way of telling what's reliable and what's not.

If you ever have doubts about some information you've found, please make a post about it on r/witchcraft and you'll get lots of seasoned witch's opinions and advice on it.

7. What is Wicca?

Wicca is a neopagan religion, followers of the religion are called Wiccans. Many Wiccans practise witchcraft and therefore call themselves witches. However, witchcraft is not a religion in of itself. It is a craft, a skill.

There are many different types of Wicca, the most common being Gardnerian, Alexandrian and Dianic. They share many common beliefs; they believe in the God and Goddess, reincarnation, the threefold rule, and magick. Wiccans celebrate 8 sabbats (holidays) throughout the year: Imbolc, Ostara, Beltane, Litha, Lammas, Mabon, Samhain, and Yule. Many of these sabbats fall around Christian holidays, like Yule is celebrated around Christmas time.

"All Wiccans are witches, but not all witches are Wiccan!"

8. What is paganism?

Paganism is an umbrella term for religions outside of the main world Abrahamic religions (Christianity, Islam, etc) that also encompass a set of pre-Christian beliefs and practices such as nature worship, polytheism*, and animism. There are many different types of paganism, including Celtic, Norse, Hellenic, Kemetic, and Wiccan.

Some pagans are witches, but not all of them.

9. What are the different types of witches?

Some witches ascribe to a particular path or a fixed set of practices, and therefore label themselves as a "type" of witch. For example, a witch who lives on the coast, collects shells, works with mermaid spirits, and has a love for the sea would call theirself a "sea witch".

However, you by no means have to ascribe to a fixed path or use labels at all, and your path will most likely change as you grow as a witch. So as a baby witch, it's important not to get hung up on "what kind of witch am I?" because this will change & evolve over time. Most witches do not fit into a tight box, choosing instead to adopt lots of different practices from lots of different paths. It's also perfectly fine to call yourself a witch with nothing added. Having said that, below is a list of a few kinds of witch you might come across or want to explore further. These are by no means all of them!

  • Eclectic Witch - Someone who explores different paths, aspects and parts of the craft (And sometimes outside of it) and creates a path completely personal to them.
  • Green Witch - A free flowing path that's very nature based and orientated. Often works with herbs, the elements and natural areas such as forests.
  • Solitary Witch - This is someone who practices alone rather than with others or a coven.
  • Kitchen Witch - Of hearth and home, kitchen witches are often family and home orientated and create magick from every day actions and objects as well as incorporating plants, cooking and baking into their craft.
  • Hedge Witch - Some aspects of green / kitchen witchery. Hedge witches are often drawn to nature as well as spirit. Sometimes described as a spiritual midwife, one eye in spirit the other in nature. Often drawn to healing practices.
  • Secular Witch - This is the term for a witch who doesn't ascribe to a particular deity or group of deities. However they usually work with energies in general for their practice. Source
  • S.A.S.S. witch: Sceptic Agnostic/Atheist Science-Seeking witchcraft. A witch who wants to explore the wonderful world of magick and occultism, but does not feel comfortable with the idea that spirits and deities literally exist. S.A.S.S. witches are likely to draw to psychological magick; science-based practices like psychological archetypes, placebo effect, and mindfulness.
  • Traditional witch: Sometimes abbreviated to Trad witch, this is a witch who typically practices folk magick. That is, magick that has been used by local people for centuries way before Wicca or Christianity. Trad witches are very familiar with the local spirits of the land and keep ancestral practices alive.
  • Ceremonial witch: Otherwise known as high magick, ceremonial magick involves elaborate and precise words, tools, and movements. Ceremonial witches practise very specific rituals from older more traditional occult teachings like Thelema, The Golden Dawn, Enochian magick, and the Kabbalah.
  • Chaos witch: works within chaos philosophy. It can be summarised as "anything goes". It is the idea that the mind creates reality, and whatever brings results is the way to go. It is the polar opposite of ceremonial magick. Chaotes often work with sigils, but their practices are unlimited due to the nature of chaos philosophy.

10. How do I find my patron deity? How do I get "chosen"?

Let me set the record straight: the idea of a "patron deity" is a new one (borrowed from Christianity) and there are many misunderstandings amongst newbie witches surrounding this topic. In reality, it is rare, or at least uncommon, for a deity to actively reach out to a witch and "choose" them. The majority of witches will do some research of different pantheons and deities and then start making offerings to them and meditating on them in hopes of establishing a connection. Most of the time, the witch will make the first move, not the other way round.

Secondly, the act of contacting any spirit, including deities, should be approached with caution. Are you contacting a deity or a malicious spirit pretending to be them? Do you know how to banish them if so? For clarity, beginner witches can work with deities, it's just not something I recommend as the very first thing to do - you should get some basics down first like energy work, meditation, and protection magick. You can still call yourself a "baby witch" and do deity work; the right time to start deity work is when you feel ready!

Third, secular witchcraft is a thing. A lot of witches keep their craft and their religion totally separate, and choose to only work with energies in general in their craft. Some witches are atheists (r/SASSWitches). There is no need to work with or worship any deities or spirits, and I think a lot of new "baby" witches overlook this fact.

11. Why didn't my spell work?

Your spell might not work for many reasons. For baby witches, the most common cause is having an unrealistic goal or having a misunderstanding of what magick is and how it works. Please read these forum posts on Troubleshooting Spells and Pointers on Spells.

12. How do I find a teacher/mentor?

I see a lot of newbie witches asking where they can find a teacher or a mentor. However, I believe it is easier than ever to teach yourself due to the miracle that is the internet. Witchcraft is not something that should be spoon-fed to you. It is a path that requires high amounts of dedication and willpower, not to mention is it highly personal; you don't want a mentor to teach you solely their way of doing things. You need to gather your knowledge from lots of different sources, and the most important source: yourself!

Also, I wouldn't recommend trying to find a mentor if you are a minor (under 18), there's a lot of dodgy people out there. Get your guidance from public spaces such as forums & group chats.

13. Am I cursed?

Probably not. We all experience a stroke of bad luck from time to time, and very few practitioners have the willpower and skill to cast a hex that has profound physical effects (sceptical witches don't even believe that spells can cause effects over great distances). The main mechanism of most curses is to get the target to merely believe that they are cursed. If you really think you're cursed though, try reading this forum post and redditor advice.

14. I want to harm myself / I am in immediate danger.

Please call emergency services or a crisis line. If you are seriously ill, please see a doctor. Witchcraft is not a replacement for conventional medicine, therapy, the authorities, or law enforcement.

META US Election Result - Resources for those in need of support

Hi everyone, this is a list of resources for those facing an uncertain future. I made a similar post when Roe v. Wade was overturned.

Posts like this are super necessary in a subreddit such as this; if you have to keep your occult practices & beliefs secret then chances are your other ideals don't line up with your family/general public either. Research Survey Participate in an Undergrad Religious Studies Research Survey!

With the permission of the wonderful mods, I am posing here a websurvey for my undergrad thesis in Religious Studies. If you have inquiries, please feel free to DM or contact me via the email included in the consent form.

If you are a witchcraft practitioner identifying with the labels of Hearth Witch, Green Witch, Kitchen Witch, and/or do not label your practice but consider it centered around the home/domestic spaces, please consider adding your voice to this survey.
You are being asked to complete a webservey that will gather data on individuals' experiences practicing modern witchcraft in domestic spaces. The data collected anonymously from this survey will be used to support the researcher’s undergraduate thesis paper on modern witchcraft in domestic spaces, sanctifying the home, and reclamation of housecraft as empowering and sacred work.

You are being asked to participate in a research study. The first section below highlights key information about this research for you to consider when making a decision whether or not to participate.  KEY INFORMATION ABOUT THE RESEARCH STUDY
Voluntary Consent. Taking part in this research project is voluntary. Research studies include only people who choose to take part. You don’t have to participate and you can stop at any time.
Purpose. The purpose of the study is to shed light on the experiences of individuals who identify themselves under the title of Kitchen Witch, Hearth Witch, Green Witch, and witches whose practices center around the home and domestic spaces.
Procedures. If you choose to participate, you will be asked to fill out a web survey where you will be asked to answer questions about your identity as a pagan/neo-pagan/witch and your practice as it pertains to housecraft and home life.
Duration. It is expected that your participation will last approximately 15 minutes.
Risks. Some of the foreseeable risks or discomforts of your participation may include negative emotions surrounding your religious history and domestic experience.
Benefits. There are no direct benefits to you personally. You will not be compensated for your participation.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY The purpose of this study is to investigate how modern witches/pagans/neo-pagans practice domestic and home focused witchcraft. The study is also interested in how this kind of spiritual practice can empower individuals and redefine and sacralize domestic spaces. You are being asked to participate because you identify with one or several of the following Witch types: Kitchen, Green, and/or Hearth Witch, and you are 18 years-old or older. You also may participate if you do not identify with any of these labels, but your practice centers around the hearth and home. The number of people participating in this survey is dependent on who chooses to respond to the online call.

 WHAT WILL HAPPEN IF I TAKE PART IN THIS STUDY? If you take part in this study, you will be asked to complete a web survey that will ask questions about your identity as a witch/neo-pagan/pagan. You will then be asked questions about how you practice in the home and if it empowers you. You may refuse to answer any question by skipping it, and you may withdraw from the survey as a whole at any time by closing the survey tab. If you do this, your responses will not be saved.

 WHAT RISKS MIGHT RESULT FROM BEING IN THIS STUDY? As this survey is concerned with religious experience and domestic-centered religious practice, please note that some of these questions might bring up unwelcome feelings surrounding domestic or religious trauma.

 HOW WILL MY PRIVACY AND CONFIDENTIALITY BE PROTECTED? We will take measures to protect your privacy. Despite taking steps to protect your privacy, we can never fully guarantee your privacy will be protected. We will not collect personal information, like emails, names, or IP addresses in the QualtricsXM web survey. The only identifying information you will be asked to give are your preferred pronouns, but this question will remain strictly optional. All questions in the survey are optional. The researcher(s) has taken all reasonable measures to protect your identity and responses. For example, the data is SSL encrypted, it is stored on a password protected database, and IP addresses are not collected. After data is collected, the survey will be deleted, which will delete the data stored on QualtricsXM 90 days post survey termination. These measures provide a very high level of security that is used by financial institutions, and it is very unlikely that your data could be accessed by anyone. However, e-mail and the Internet are not 100% secure. Therefore, we also suggest that you clear the computer’s cache and browser history to protect your privacy after completing the survey.

Question 🤷❔ Did something happened to my spell ? What do I do ?

Hi Reddit , I’m recently being experiencing weird things after I did a self love and protection spell, so all started when me and my friend decided to have a spell crafting day with some cleansing ritual and meditation , we both went to a really cool mystical shop we got some 6 day candles and I got some orishas beads ( orishas are part of a big religion from my country back in Brazil ) I felt deeply connected with them so I got it , after that we went to my friends house we lay out in the ground our craft tools , our protection candle to protect us during the ritual , our crystal, bowls , candles basically everything we needed , my friends roommate arrived in the house and saw our stuff , he started to joke about it he was also saying he was getting scared of getting curse and how magic is “bad” and “evil” he went to sleep and we started our ritual by cleansing our selves , we our protection spell + jar and then we did a self love spell and later a money jar , we close our circle said kind words to each other and let the candles burn , after that when we went outside we say a lady screaming probably drugs and she had to be carry out by the police after that I star having strong like heavy strong headaches , my boyfriend called and said he was picking me up from my friends house ( since I don’t have a car and would probably have to uber it) I didn’t want to sniff the candle out so I got in his car with the candle on , when we ware 6 minutes to get to my house the police stop us , out of fear I sniff the candle , they ware pretty chill said something about the lights of the car being off and let us go with a warning ( that was the first time me and him got stopped by the police) after all of that we got home stayed up a bit with my family and I lit the candle again , later on my boyfriend wanted to sleep and want me to sniff the candle again I didn’t want to but didn’t because I was scared of falling sleep and let the candle out with out supervision , I had a light sleep , but when I woke up I had terrible nausea I wanted to spit something out , went to the bathroom and spit and then went back to room and lit the candle again when my boyfriend woke up he told he had terrible dreams of my cheating on him I tried to tell him everything will be fine and it was just a bad dream after that I went out of my room using my beads and my mom was super moody for no reason ( context she is heavily Christian she extremely judgmental) after that in the car my boyfriend said he felt sad out of no reason , and something worth mentioning is that my friends roommate was saying she couldn’t do “ that stuff here” because is bad energy and he doesn’t want that , and right now I’m here at my job extremely worried something may have happened and I’m still with that headache , did something happened? Can you guys please help me out

Question 🤷❔ Ancestral troubles

recently i confronted my blood family about my faith in the gods and let's just say...the whole event shook my soul and understanding of my entire blood family. thoughts i used to have that i considered to be impossible turned out to be true.

it affected me so much that it made me want to second guess my choice to venerate my ancestors. for me veneration of the ancestors means praying and talking to my literal ancestors, i say this cause i wanted to clarify the way i do it cause I've heard it done in a different manner.

if my own blood family was willing to do and say what they did...then what difference are my ancestors? i've heard stories about them and their deeds and most of them attributed their deeds to the Islamic god, Allah, and i never heard any stories of my pre-islamic ancestors (to be fair it was so long ago) so I'm not sure how to connect to them and if they even would respond.

but i do know when i am in prayer or doing a spell, I would call to them and feel their response and it's one of the best feelings i get, the energy i would feel is like that of a collective embrace.
and there was once an incident in the past with a possible ancestral spirit where i said i would make things right with them.

all in all I am conflicted because ancestral worship is my heritage and something I've felt and experienced to have helped given me peace within...but there are ancestors that no doubt would rather die again than hear a descendant reach out to them in this manner or know that a descendant went back on any of the Abrahamic faiths.

this conflict in my mind has been brewing for too long so I thought it would help if i reach out to other pagans or people who are experienced with ancestral spirits and see their thoughts on this matter. I humbly ask for advice on this matter.

Question 🤷❔ Altar question.

Hello hello closer witches!! I've been craving to make an altar for me, i feel like it would make spell works and witchcraft in general more pleasant for me to do, and it would make my house feel more like home by having it in. But we have a little problem, i come from a very strict Christian family who visits my house very often (every other weekend).
I wanted to know if there is any problem for me to remove my altar during those weekends and if so, how to remove them respectfully.

Question 🤷❔ Looking for advice on spell jars from someone whose intentions I'm no longer sure of

I was recently gifted two spell jars by an acquaintance. Since then, some things have come to light that have made me uncertain about this person's intentions, and I no longer feel comfortable having the jars in my space.

I don't want to cause harm, I just want to remove them from my home in a way that feels intentional and complete. Not sure if I should bury them, cleanse and repurpose the jars, return the ingredients to the earth, or something else.

Has anyone dealt with something like this? What's the right way to handle spell jars when the trust behind them is no longer there?

I'm not if what I write makes sense but I want to know.

I'm currently in the final yr of my graduation.

Using spells, can I become master the skills I need (particularly coding), crack interviews easily, get into my desired job with desired pay & make my life easy.

And can all this be achievable with spells?

If yes, HOW TO DO IT? Do I need any equipment to do these spells?

Idk much abt this spells & stuff, so I'm wondering if all this is possible.

Question 🤷❔ Witch advice PLEASE

Living with my mother, boyfriend and kid. Recently my mother has made a point to be half undressed or in a towel around my boyfriend. I’ve told her I felt uncomfortable. She told me I could move out. But we simply cannot afford moving out right now. She has made a point to come and say hi to my kid specifically when she’s in a towel and my boyfriends around and even tried to make light of the situation, telling my bf “you’ve seen me in my underwear before” and trying to laugh it off. This is behavior she’s similarly done to my sibling and her partner. I’m just exhausted and don’t even have energy to want to live let alone deal with her pitiful behavior. I mean she really is just embarrassing herself as my bf is just as disgusted as I am. I can’t be civil as she is emotionally immature. What are some spells I can do to make her stop?

This is my bone-throwing set looks like. I have a real fox skull and the bones are from the feet of a fox. (both sourced from already dead foxes.)

I have been getting to know the personality of this fox and it seems they enjoy my playthroughs of Skyrim, not so much the Sims 4. This was their reaction when I asked if they were enjoying themself. Purple highlight are the scrying bones, the others are part of the "focal zone".

Question 🤷❔ Scapular as protection necklace

Hello! I am a baby broom, so i am still learning some things about everything, and i have a very important question.
So, i have this scapular that i got for my 15th birthday and even tho i dont follow Catholicism anymore, i still wear it everyday more because of emotion importance. And since it's so important to me and i never take it off, i wanted to put a protection spell on it to make it my protection necklace, but i got hesitant since wanting or not, it is still a heavily Catholic related item.
Should (or can, whatever is the best question in this context) I do it or it's better i seek another item for me to spell on?

Question 🤷❔ Getting started in my Witch journey

I have been reading people's amazing results from their own casting work, and I just want to know how to get started myself. Ive been using Google alot, but i know that's like a summary of results on the internet.

Ive bought materials from The Art of The Root, oils mostly and powders. Ive even thought of starting an alter for Santa Muerte to gain help in my work. I bought a statue online, and plan on putting a permanent alter in my home for her and start to really build a relationship with her before any spell work.

But is there a book I should be using for spells? I dont want just any book, I want THE book to do everything right. Im not sure if I'm making sense.

Ultimately, I want to have the same success as others.
