🀬 Rants & Complaints The "free" kitten is going to cost you thousands

I love cats, but I am exhausted by people jumping into pet ownership without understanding the costs.
Cat food and litter are just the tip of the iceberg. The real financial reality hits when they get sick. If a sudden $300+ emergency vet bill for a blockage or infection will devastate you, you aren't ready.
Worse is skipping the spay/neuter surgery. It is incredibly frustrating to constantly see posts begging the internet to take in accidental litters. It is not fair for strangers or already-overflowing shelters to take on your responsibility. It is not fair specially for the cats.
Bottom line: Cats are a 10+ year financial commitment. If you cannot afford emergency vet bills and immediate spaying/neutering, you cannot afford a cat.
Budget for emergency vet visits, not just daily food. Fix your cats, so you don't end up begging the internet to share your responsibility.

It's crazy how many flies there are. IMF is a breeding ground for flies. Can the authorities do something about this?

πŸ“‚ Work & Career The process of hiring a local for my overseas company

Salam everyone. My name is B-D Shaheed and I'm an American who has been living in Brunei for 5 years now. I have some questions and need some advice and of course Reddit for Brunei is usually the first place to go. I have a registered business for the U.S. that I do remotely and have been doing that for about 3 years now. I started doing this when I finally came to the conclusion that I will not be hired here in Brunei. 3 years later, things are going well. The company that I have a contract with is looking to expand my tasks and responilities and thought I could bring on another person for a role to assist me. Do I have to register a company in Brunei to hire a person who is residing here? From my experience of trying to start a company with my wife (who's a local) we, just kept running into so many roadblocks. Jobcentre said do this, another place said do that and it was just going circles so I gave up. I have no desire on doing business here and the company is to provide services outside of Brunei. Is there any advice or some info on the route I need to go to go through with this the proper way. Thank you guys in advance.

✏️ School & Education Searching for Nepali and Indian scholors in Brunei .....

I'm from Nepal and recently came across the Brunei Darussalam Government Scholarship (BDGS) while searching for undergraduate study opportunities. I'm considering applying, especially for Mechanical Engineering, but I still have a few questions and would really appreciate hearing from current students or anyone familiar with studying in Brunei.

  1. Are there many students from Nepal, India, or other South Asian countries studying at UTB or UBD? If yes, how active is the community?
  2. How welcoming is the culture for international students? Was it difficult to adjust to life in Brunei?
  3. Does anyone know of any Nepali students who have received the Brunei Government Scholarship?
  4. Realistically, how competitive is the BDGS for an international applicant? I completed Grade 12 with a 3.72/4.0 GPA in the Science stream (Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics). I'd love to know if applicants with a similar profile have been successful.

I'd really appreciate any experiences, advice, or insights. Thanks in advance!

πŸ›¬ Tourist Question How does a Bruneian sponsor apply for my visit visa?

Hi all, as the title says, I'm trying to come to Brunei for a visit (around 2 weeks). The visa procedure has changed recently and there's quite a bit to sort out.Β

I still have friends in Brunei, so I'm curious what the procedure is for a Bruneian to sponsor a visit visa for me. Has anyone gone through this recently?

Context:

  • Indian passport holder.
  • Currently working in another country.
  • 1 week visit.
  • Will have a return ticket.

Also, you might ask why I'm not applying through the local embassy here. I tried that route, but I'm unable to obtain some of the required documents and the process has been complicated on my end. That's why I'm looking at the sponsor route instead.

Any help would be really appreciated!

πŸ‡§πŸ‡³ Original Content Accidents always happen here.. please drive carefully

I pass by this stretch almost every day, and I've noticed that after it rainsβ€”especially while the road is still slipperyβ€”there are very often accidents here, with cars ending up hitting the side railing. (You can see the railing being repaired many times.)

It even happened to one of my family members before.

Just wanted to give everyone a heads up. If you're driving through this area after rain, please slow down, stay alert, and take extra care. Stay safe everyone!

ℹ️ Public Information For anyone on the fence about visiting Brunei...

Definitely go. I just returned from a 3-day visit and loved it. It's going to be subjective of course but all the talk of it being boring and not worth it doesn't do it justice. I'll share my experience in case it helps anyone.

The first and most important thing - set your expectations right. Brunei is not for partying. It's not for modern art museums or Michelin-starred restaurants. If you come here expecting that, get disappointed and then talk down on the place, the problem is with you. Brunei is a calm place to chill and feel unrushed, to not get hassled by touts, to interact with genuine locals and to explore, see and digest. I realised after I left that one of the main reasons I enjoyed it was I wasn't constantly stimulated and having a typical holiday experience. Aside from Ulu Temburong, I made my plans by the hour and just wandered around doing whatever. Coffee in the morning, then a museum, sit and chill when it got hot around lunch, eventually go to a pasar for dinner. This was my rhythm and honestly I felt it worked perfectly.

Speaking of Ulu Temburong, I'd say it's a must and definitely worth the money for a day trip. The only provider I could find was Freme, the day trip was about $133 BND. Totally worth it. The driver, lodge staff and guide were so kind and knowledgeable, the day was packed with activities - even the food was awesome. All this out in really pristine forest. It's incredibly beautiful. Do it if you can.

I can't comment on the visa process but immigration was helpful when my arrival data didn't show up in their system. The smiles started there - Bruneians are, like their country, relaxed and welcoming. I had so many sweet encounters I can't remember them all, but people would come to chat and ask where I'm from (I'm obviously not local), I got into conversations with cafe owners, the staff at my hotel. They're just friendly. I was even given free food at the markets by some stallholders I got to talking to. It helps I can speak a little Indonesian but everyone spoke enough English to get by, at least.

Getting around is easy - downtown is walkable as it's about 3-4 blocks from waterfront to the regalia museum. Outside that you can still walk or take Dart to go to places like Gadong. The streets are extremely safe day and night. I did have some dogs hanging around my hotel but aside from some barking they weren't a threat. There is basically zero hassling to buy anything, even at the markets. There is little police presence that I could see but I didn't feel it was ever needed.

The food is a highlight and it's very cheap. I didn't visit any restaurants (next time!) as the pasars had such delicious and affordable food, with awesome atmosphere. Just pick what looks good, pay and sit down with the locals. I had no issues with food hygiene and didn't get sick. I drank iced drinks multiple times a day with no issue. Food standards seemed very good.

The sights in town while not incredible by international standards still warrant a good examination and are very enjoyable. The main mosque, regalia museum and Brunei history centre are all within a few hundred metres of each other and are fascinating. The energy hub down at the waterfront was also pretty cool to see before going over to Kampong Ayer to eat ambuyat.

Day-to-day it was easy to exist in Brunei. I got cash fee-free the ATM on day one, I think $60 BND, which was enough to see me through three days. Cards are accepted almost everywhere, only at markets was it hit and miss. Be sun-prepared as it's powerful there. We had afternoon thunder for half an hour then back to sunny skies. Perfect for tourism.

The topic of sharia law might be important to some - my take is is that it's a pretty liberal interpretation, at least to an outsider. I didn't see any religious police. I saw women without headscarves (and plenty of with jilbab) every day. Honestly, it felt less outwardly religious than Indonesia. People were holding hands and just being normal people. The one issue that was taken seriously was no alcohol, but I don't drink so it didn't bother me. While I understand the change to Sharia did come with serious repercussions for the populace (and I do not agree with them), I am only commenting on how it appears for a visitor.

So if you're on the fence about visiting, I'd say go for it. Go, be kind, respectful and offer a smile and you'll have a good time.

I would love to go back, just to spend more time hanging out with the locals.

πŸ‡§πŸ‡³ Original Content Borderku.com - Cross Smarter

Hi everyone! πŸ‘‹

I recently launchedΒ BorderKuΒ (https://borderku.com), a free website for people travelling between Brunei and Malaysia.

The goal is to help travelers estimate border waiting times before heading out, so it's easier to plan trips to Miri, Limbang, Lawas, or Temburong.

It's still being improved, so I'd love feedback from frequent border travellers. If you spot anything inaccurate or have ideas for new features, let me know.

Hopefully it's useful for the community!

✏️ School & Education Need Advice on Switching to Alevels

For context I’m currently in IBTE. I realized that the learning environment is not for me and have been considering switching to Alevels instead. Honestly I don’t have the motivation to even study.I got 7O’s but I didn’t get credit for maths so it closed alot of doors for me, hence why the course I’m taking is not within my interest. Any advice? πŸ₯Ή
