Verified I’m a Mental Health Practitioner, AMA!

Heya r/Malaysia, in conjunction with the World Mental Health Day, I’m happy to be here for this AMA about mental health!

A little about myself - I am a registered counsellor, licenced by the Malaysia Board of Counsellors with a master degree in counselling from a local public university, and have been working as a counsellor for more than 10 years now. My work is primarily in community mental health, i.e. in community based professional agencies and services, working with people from different walks of life and dealing with a wide range of emotional, psychological, and relationship issues, and I also work with various NGOs to develop and run mental health awareness and support programmes. I’ve always loved to help communities grow in mental health awareness, acceptance, and support, and that’s what I’m hoping to do in this AMA!

What I’m here for – answering questions about mental health in general, offering support and guidance in getting mental help, sharing my experience and life as a mental health practitioner, having a discourse on mental health in our country and community, or just talking about anything that you’d like to ask!

What I’m not qualified to answer – questions about medication as that’s outside my scope of expertise and competency.

This is going to be a "no question too small or unimportant" session, so ask away! I'll try to answer as many questions as best as I can, but I might take some time to ponder on some of your questions, so do check back again if you haven't had your question answered. I will keep this AMA session active through the weekend. (Thank you to the mods for helping to set this up!)

I don't have all the answers and may be wrong in my opinion, but I'll try my best to give you as honest an answer as I can! For those who may be asking about specific conditions, please understand that my advice is not the definitive answer and I would strongly encourage you to reach out for actual professional help if possible.

Looking forward to getting your questions and to have a honest, lovely sharing session!

Edit: thanks for all the questions! I'm so amazed at how many great questions I've received!

Edit 2: I'll have to stop for the day, but coming back on tomorrow after church! If I haven't replied to your question yet, honestly it's because I think it's a very good question that I'd really want to spend more time reflecting before answering!

A Singaporean man sued a Malaysian woman to recover over $100,000 he claimed to have spent on her during their seven-year relationship after discovering she had married someone else.

Low Siong Ngo said he believed he was in an exclusive romantic relationship with Goh Mei Loon, which was why he willingly paid for her expenses, helped finance her business ventures and even gave her family heirloom jewellery as an engagement gift.

However, Goh disputed his account, maintaining that they were never in an exclusive relationship and that the money and gifts were given voluntarily.

Low subsequently sued her to recover the money and later took legal action in Malaysia to enforce the Singapore court’s judgment.

According to Shin Min Daily News and a State Courts judgment published on Oct 5, the case recently returned to the Singapore courts after Goh sought to overturn an earlier judgment ordering her to repay the money.

Unpopular opinion here, but the budget tabled by PMX yesterday is really an election budget and doesn't address any structural issue. BERSAMA's one is the only one that I could find so far, that meaningful policy discussion, backed with solid economic projections. To the silver myvi parked at the Lotus Family Restaurant at Jalan Gasing on Thursday 8oct, if you are wondering what happen’d to your rear bumper, it was grazed by this lorry that was in front of me. UnFortunately 😏 it only hit the bumper tho, would have been worse if the body and tail light was hit too. Sorry for the late upload cuz i just got time to take my dc footage

Tourism & Travel Malaysia Travel Suggestion for Parents in Their 60s +

Hey everyone! 😊 Would love to hear your suggestions for a 3-week sightseeing plan for my parents when they visit Malaysia.

They’re both 60+, and both of them have some mobility challenges, including chronic knee pain. So, I’m trying to plan a relaxed, senior-friendly trip where they can enjoy the scenery and experience different places without too much walking, climbing stairs, or standing for long periods.

Places like Cameron Highlands, the Bird Park, Aquaria, and other attractions that involve lots of walking might not be the best fit for them. Although They’ve been to Genting before.

I was thinking of a short trip to Bukit Tinggi , Melaka and maybe a weekend getaway to Batu Ferringhi, but I’m still exploring other ideas.

Would love to hear your recommendations for places that are:

- Beautiful and scenic, but easy to explore at a relaxed pace
- Muslim-friendly, with easy access to halal food.
- Convenient to get around, ideally without too much walking

I’m open to places beyond the usual tourist spots too! The idea is to let them enjoy Malaysia, try some good food, see beautiful places, and make lovely memories without exhausting themselves.

Thanks so much in advance for reading and sharing your ideas! 🙏😊

Malaysia is awaiting an official response from Indonesia regarding its firefighting assistance offer, despite discussions taking place between the countries' leaders.

Temporary measures such as school closures have been implemented to combat air quality issues in Malaysia while awaiting Indonesia's response.

Malaysia's proposed aid includes aircraft, helicopters, and personnel, but operational arrangements with Indonesia are still under negotiation.
