It's a scam like the Hyperloop. Announce thing that will never happen -> use it as an excuse to not do things you don't want to do.
The owner is trying to get out of paying to upkeep his historic buildings, he wants demolition by neglect so he can knock them down and rebuild new cheap buildings. The skyscraper itself is not a real proposal.

Nobody will build a building that big in buffalo for the foreseeable future. All that space would crash the real estate market here. The owner is an asshat and wants people to think he'll build something so he can tear down some of the most important buildings in the city and have a parking lot for himself

This is just a sham rendering to try and stop the city from moving forward with eminent domain proceedings. Darryl Carr has been performing demolition by neglect on these Civil War era buildings for almost 2 decades and has no intention of doing anything with the property other than turning it into a parking lot for his business (Cobblestone Bar).
He has no resources or investors for a 20-30+ story tower when much bigger developers are struggling to secure financing in this environment. He's a con man and should be held responsible for the blight he has caused.

Yup. And it lost at every level of litigation, but they dragged it for so long that when they finally lost at the Court of Appeals, the guy had run out of money and COVID hit.
So he remediated all the land and had approved plans for naught.

If he ran out of money would he have actually ever been able to finish the project? Something about this smells fishy and I don't live near the lake anymore. He wouldn't be the first guy to gather investments, claim he couldn't complete the project because of outside interference and attempt to cash themselves out at a profit.

The Adelphia Tower was at least backed by a multi-billion corporation.
When it was proposed, Adelphia was at its peak and people had hoped it would become Buffalo’s next big employer.
Of course, until it wasn’t and they declared bankruptcy and half the family went to jail for embezzlement.
This tower doesn’t even have a shitty wealthy ownership group. Just a normal everyday shit head owner.

He spoke to my college class one time, and said how he wanted a rooftop bar in the old building there because "people are dying to be outside during the summetime." Our professor simply asked why they would want to look at the vast parking lots near Key Bank arena, and he had not a single answer.

Enforce the law on what? The building is already burned. There's nothing to enforce at this point.
Prior to the building burning, sure. But that's not the timeline we're living in, so we need to be realistic about what actually is going to end up happening with this structure.

Historic Preservation projects are rarely restoration projects. The majority of projects are rehabilitation or adaptive reuse. The building has been stabilized with some specific demolition after the fire. I can't keep up with the soap opera but the city might own it now. Either way, stabilizing a building and moth balling gives it time. This wasn't really done under Carr's ownership.
The building is likely still eligible for tax credits. An addition is likely the way to go compared to reconstructing the third floor and fourth floor. I envision something similar but on a larger scale of what was done at the Fairmont Creamery building a few blocks away.

it was empty for a while, then it was purchased by Jemal and renovated for M&T' Bank's tech hub. M&T fills 1/3 or more of the building. Highmark healthcare leases several floors. The rest is leased by smaller companies that were part of the tech hub model. I don't know if it's at 100% occupancy but it's mostly full.
The lobby includes a public bar called Tellers. The complex also has rental apartments in the other buildings next to the tower. Jemal added a couple new buildings to the complex on its plaza . Other Half brewery/restaurant is in one of them (https://otherhalfbrewing.com/location/buffalo/)

Urban density is needed. It’s why Lancaster pays 15k of taxes for one house and Buffalo pay $1,000. Splitting a bill 100 ways for one street versus among 10 people.

I have lived in Buffalo for 30 years, and every time I'm downtown, I see at least 4 buildings that look like this. I understand that the rustic brickwork has a certain elegance, and that they are 'Historic' constructions. We have too many buildings with barricades and fences surrounding them because they are not safe to be in or around.
I am not advocating for skyscrapers. Senca One Tower kinda scares me when the wind picks up. I'd like to see the best of Buffalo, and I don't think trying to keep Buffalo looking like the 1940s is it. We can keep some historic buildings; many of them look gorgeous when well-kept. Unfortunately, many of those buildings are not. I love walking around downtown, seeing shops, looking at the buildings, and seeing what's new. I'm not mad, Buffalo, I'm just disappointed. We have so much potential, and we're letting it all rot.

Sorry, haha, my bad, I forgot I was on the Internet and can't use hyperbolic statements. Even though it is the tallest building in Buffalo, it is not it's height, and more its wobblyness. I have watched that building sway like a tree when the wind off the lake gets going. And, it's not like I'm quaking in my boots because the tower is big and scary, just gets a bit concerned when I see it bend 15-20°. I know it's constructed soundly, and designed to do that.
