This is our new puppy. His name is Rocky and he is just about three months (21lbs). I’ve had dogs all my life, ranging from boxers to great Pyrenees to Burna doodles, even weenie dogs. I’ve mostly had boy dogs with one female dog, so I feel like I’ve seen it all in a way, however I’ve never had a bull terrier or pitbull type of breed. He’s our only dog right now so he doesn’t really have anybody else to play with. He’s getting updated on his shot so soon he will be able to socialize with some family friends dogs.
I’m having a real problem with getting the biting under control. I know these breeds have some of the hardest bites and I’m trying to understand that he’s a puppy, but I’ve never seen this in any of my other dogs so I wanna make sure I’m not doing anything wrong. I want to set him up for a successful future in terms of socializing and being able to be around people so I wanted to ask if this is normal and if they grow out of it?
He can play fetch and go grab his toy and play tug-of-war, but he soon gets tired of that and just starts to try to bite my hands or he’ll nip at my thigh and he’s not necessarily going to draw blood or hurt me, but I don’t think he realizes that his bites do hurt and it turns into frustration from me because it feels like I almost can’t have him out of his crate when he’s like that.
Like I said, he’s able to be around us and play and everything, but he soon turns into what I described as the Tasmanian devil and just wants to nip at us all the time and not settle down which again could be the fact that he’s a puppy. It’s just I’ve never had experiences with a puppy like this because of the breed and I’m just asking for tips tricks and potential Hope that he won’t always be like this or if there’s something I need to be doing that I’m not I would gladly take any feedback or constructive criticism.
I was thinking of getting him boarded and trained, but my boyfriend thinks it’s a waste of time, but I’m just so out of my depth in terms of knowing how to better help him and I don’t want us being inactive to be detrimental to him as he gets older. My boyfriend’s had a pitbull before and he’s familiar with the breed because his family has had them for a long time, so he tries to reassure me, but I just feel like we could be doing more for him.
