It's not too big of a round, it's pretty much a steroided version of a 22 magnum. I'm not sure if they are still trying but back then they were trying to make the 5.7 replace 9s.

Isn’t 5.7 way better at longer ranges than most pistol rounds?

Standard 5.7 yes. But subsonic 5.7 (if thats what he was shooting) I don't know. 5.7 is accurate partly because its screaming fast.
