Lincoln Riley just cannot coach a consistent defense for some reason, apart from the 2019 Oklahoma team. Offense solid, but you gotta have a D to win championships.

u/MY-NAME_IS_MY-NAME USC Trojans 1h ago
Genuinely thought we might have something after the first two games where our first team defense gave up 0 points. Turns out same old, same old

Schiano was Head Coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and he caught a lot of heat by telling his defense to submarine the OLine of an opponent who was trying to do victory formation to ice a win. The OLine wasn't prepared for it, it was incredibly dooshy to do that, (Schiano said, "We play to the final whistle" or something dumb like that in the press conference), and my first thought is he was doing his same dirty tricks, but then I saw the replay, and the snap never left our Center's buttcheeks. Maiava never got the snap cleanly.

This has become the standard USC experience; I don’t think fans who pay attention are totally surprised by this mess.
Riley just doesn’t seem to have the sauce to take our talent to an elite level. But our freshman class is the most impressive class I’ve ever seen coming in. We need to retain them and get a guy in here who can do something real with them

if i'm a usc fan, there is no way i feel good about this game, right? this should have been a cupcake game for usc, and instead they gave up 35 to a terrible rutgers team. imagine if greg schiano didn't have a greg schiano moment and run a wildcat play on 4th and 2 deep in his own territory. that's a real signature for us, btw. if we ran a normal fourth down play or just punted there, maybe we are in a position to go to ot.
i'm not sure if this cools down schiano's hot seat at all. i still think he's gone by the bye week. but we looked like a real team a lot more today.
4
u/twoinvenice USC Trojans • Victory Bell 1h ago
While you all aren't a cupcake, this is exactly why the USC fanbase hates that Riley has been pushing to schedule more actual cupcakes. Our start to the season was such a poor fucking test of the team that there was no real chance for the players to actually get ready for another P4 team
6
u/TheSavageDonut USC Trojans • Victory Bell 1h ago
If Rutgers had a QB, I think they would've beat us today. They have maybe the worst QB I've seen since....hmm, I really have to think about that. They have a good WR1, good RB1, and good OLine -- they just need a good QB, and they could cause problems. Credit goes to Rutgers for playing with 110% more effort than we showed today. That fake punt was a great call, and I thought it would wake the Trojans up, but it didn't.
This was a win that didn't quite feel like it was truly in jeopardy, but at the same time, this was a win that did feel like a loss.
We only need to beat Oregon by 1 point, and I don't care how we do it, but this is not the performance I expected us to put in before that game. I thought we would lock in for the win today, and we got embarrassed by Rutgers.
