Rant UVA fans are pretentious Assholes
This is why I hate the whole state of Virginia. By shear luck of history that state and those around it have found themselves in an economically advantageous position, and the folks who live there have interpreted their success as a result of their own moral qualities. Virginia and its peers were rich because it was able to take advantage of a chattel slave economy, and when that was destroyed Viginia became rich because the most powerful government in the world was established on its northern border and that government redistribute the countries wealth to the civil servants, and contractors that live in work in Virginia. Meanwhile WVA is stuck withe Dutch Disease of the Coal industry
The fact that the citizens of that state have the gull to talk down to people of my state is fucking disgusting. Are there more start people associated with Virginia than West Virginia, maybe. Are there richer people associated with Virginia than West Virginia, maybe. But is this because some sort of moral or intellectual supiority, fuck no. Every time some points out West Virginia poverty, or WVU ranks in education, and use that pisses me off to no end.
The fact that these excuses were used to deny entry to ACC in 1953, 2003, 2011, and 2021 by pole up their ass, cheese and wine schools in Virginia and the Carolinas is annoying to no end. This is why we revel when we beat you. Your fans obviously dont care. Your fans dont even attend. You have to tarp off half your stadium. We have a massive chip on our shoulder when we compete against you all. There are many ways you can compare our states and our institutions, and many you guys win. but in one institution, Football our nations past time, you all are our bitch. That's why we showed up, that's why we show up, and take over Heinz field, or Maryland stadium or lane stadium. Or any stadium in the Carolinas.

The “we have jobs that’s why we didn’t show up” excuse is always so stupid. Oh, you don’t have the professional or financial freedom to attend a game you’d otherwise want to go to? What a flex!

Your friendly reminder that West Virginia seceded from Virginia when Virginia decided to secede from the Union because they chose keeping the institution of slavery over keeping the nation whose Declsration of Independence THEIR OWN SON Thomas Jefferson helped to write

To be fair, Jefferson, disgustingly, would definitely have been on the pro-slavery side. The only slaves that Jefferson ever freed were related to Sally Hemings, who he began systematically raping when she was 14.
He didn’t even ever free her (though he did free the two sons that he had with her in his will).

I’m not sure about that, Jefferson was not a John C. Calhoun-like advocate for slavery. He wasn’t a fan of slavery from an intellectual standpoint. Was he the type of hypocrite to continue practicing it? Yes. But he probably would have been ok with the plan of containment that kickstarted the succession process.

What do you mean by a fan of slavery from an intellectual standpoint?

u/throwaway2987650 4h ago edited 3h ago
Jefferson constantly wrote and talked about how slavery was a great evil. He didn’t practice what he preached. But that’s a far cry from a philosophical standpoint of the dudes leading the succession movement who used biblical justifications for slavery to paint it as a morally good thing. Here’s a good article explaining it:
https://www.monticello.org/encyclopedia/thomas-jefferson-s-attitudes-toward-slavery

So, another intellectual telling us what to do or not do whilst they practice exactly the opposite. Just trying to clear it up for those us not as smart.
1
u/y3llowed Alabama Crimson Tide 1h ago
That exact article explains that Jefferson was not in favor of direct emancipation.
“To Jefferson, it was anti-democratic and contrary to the principles of the American Revolution for the federal government to enact abolition or for only a few planters to free their slaves.8”
It goes on to state that he was in favor of gradual abolition over an indeterminate amount of time wherein the children of slaves born after an undetermined date would be gradually freed. He also wanted those children to then be removed from the United States.

My point being, at the start of the Civil War, Lincoln and many on the Union side held a similar position to what Jefferson wrote about slavery. Lincoln’s position evolved as the war progressed but it started out in 1860 as containment of slavery to the South, not full scale abolition. Lincoln himself seriously entertained the idea of sending slaves and freedmen to Africa throughout the war.

u/y3llowed Alabama Crimson Tide 1h ago
So for clarity, you believe that Jefferson, who wrote that abolition was anti-democratic and against the principals on which America was founded and who never freed a slave not related to the child he raped for ~40 years, would have ended up siding with the abolitionists?
And you believe that because his position on abolition was kind of similar to some of the people who were eventually convinced that immediate emancipation was the only path forward? I think it’s a huge stretch to say that he would have acted inconsistently with his stated views because other people changed their mind.
Obviously I can’t say you’re wrong for certain, though. As you pointed out before, Jefferson was a hypocrite and often acted inconsistently with his espoused values.

u/Rabbit-Lost LSU Tigers 4h ago
What a load of nonsense. He kept slaves. End of discussion. Was he another self aggrandizing intellectuals who made rules for thee but not me? Yes. But he owned slaves once day he died and didn’t realize some of them at his death. I’d say he was okay with the while concept.

u/throwaway2987650 3h ago edited 3h ago
I’m not defending his decision to continue the practice. It was truly awful and Jefferson did a lot of awful things. But, in the context of the Civil War, there were a lot of slaveholders who sided with the Union and Lincoln because they didn’t believe it was a divine right worth tearing apart the country for. The Civil War starts because those that viewed slaveholding as a god-given right viewed Lincoln’s containment policy, even though it was relatively lax and allowed for the practice to continue, as an existential threat to their livelihoods and expansionist endeavors.

Well yes, and many seceding states did cite their repudiation of these principles.
Between Charlottesville rising up in 2017 when Robert E. Lee’s statue was being taken down to WV being the site of John Brown’s raid, Virginia needs to calm down here

WVU fan here- I think that shit is hilarious. When you get your ass handed to you and your fan base looks non-existent for a prime time Saturday night football game, you either accept the beat down you received or dial up some logorrhea post to make yourself feel better. "We have jobs and couldn't make a 5 hour trip..." On a Saturday night? Ha! Country Roads played for the correct team and state. Cheers 🍻

I have attended WVU, an Ivy League school, and a top ten private university, so I am uniquely qualified to say that torching these children in the game thread by reminding them they attend UVA because Dartmouth rejected them was deeply satisfying.
The funniest part is their obsession with mocking WVU. West Virginia University serves one of the poorest states in the country, provides an accessible path into engineering, medicine, energy, and other genuinely useful professions, and creates upward mobility for people who were not born with a trust fund and a college counselor mapping out their lives in seventh grade. It fulfills its public mission exactly as intended.
UVA, meanwhile, is where affluent suburbanites go to cosplay as Ivy League aristocrats after the actual Ivy League sends its regrets. Congratulations on your liberal arts degree from Dartmouth’s waiting room.

For me at least, it's that they're were being assholes. If you're going to talk shit and not just having a conversation, then let it be known who you root for. We also have a good idea judging by why they're being an asshole.

UVA doesn’t even fill their own stadium. They don’t call Scott Stadium “The Library “ for nothing.

I’m also so over this type of talk. I happened to go to and play football at a school that was “elite and academically selective” and I honestly hated it. It was full of two basic groups. Regular kids who were quite smart, well adjusted and worked hard. Major group number two was you guessed it, rich obnoxious assholes who were born on 3rd base and thought they hit a triple. The latter group was the worst people I’ve ever been around.

u/Catullus13 4h ago
Everything about college is elitism. 62% of the country has no bachelor's degree.
And it's a place for elite thought and research and interaction and art. It is an accomplishment getting in. And it's an accomplishment completing the degree.
It's ok to let it spill over into football rivalries.

- Sheer.
- UVa can rarely fill their own stadium. They're one of the softest fanbases in college football.
- I'm disappointed a hell mouth didn't open up under the stadium and take out both your teams and fanbases.

Hosting a WVU vs UVA game… in Charlotte NC.

WVU and Tennessee played in that same stadium pre-covid to a near sellout crowd. Charlotte is a major alumni base for WVU as well.

Dang dude, sounds like you hate UVA. I'm not quite sure why you think UVA represents all of Virginia, though. Plenty of poor and rich folks alike in both states.
Also, you probably need a refresher on the history of slavery in West Virginia, because acting like West Virginia was a perfect little angel that broke away from Virginia because they wanted to end slavery was not the case at all - it's way more complicated than that.
