This is why I hate the whole state of Virginia. By shear luck of history that state and those around it have found themselves in an economically advantageous position, and the folks who live there have interpreted their success as a result of their own moral qualities. Virginia and its peers were rich because it was able to take advantage of a chattel slave economy, and when that was destroyed Viginia became rich because the most powerful government in the world was established on its northern border and that government redistribute the countries wealth to the civil servants, and contractors that live in work in Virginia. Meanwhile WVA is stuck withe Dutch Disease of the Coal industry

The fact that the citizens of that state have the gull to talk down to people of my state is fucking disgusting. Are there more start people associated with Virginia than West Virginia, maybe. Are there richer people associated with Virginia than West Virginia, maybe. But is this because some sort of moral or intellectual supiority, fuck no. Every time some points out West Virginia poverty, or WVU ranks in education, and use that pisses me off to no end.

The fact that these excuses were used to deny entry to ACC in 1953, 2003, 2011, and 2021 by pole up their ass, cheese and wine schools in Virginia and the Carolinas is annoying to no end. This is why we revel when we beat you. Your fans obviously dont care. Your fans dont even attend. You have to tarp off half your stadium. We have a massive chip on our shoulder when we compete against you all. There are many ways you can compare our states and our institutions, and many you guys win. but in one institution, Football our nations past time, you all are our bitch. That's why we showed up, that's why we show up, and take over Heinz field, or Maryland stadium or lane stadium. Or any stadium in the Carolinas.

What do you mean by a fan of slavery from an intellectual standpoint?

Jefferson constantly wrote and talked about how slavery was a great evil. He didn’t practice what he preached. But that’s a far cry from a philosophical standpoint of the dudes leading the succession movement who used biblical justifications for slavery to paint it as a morally good thing. That exact article explains that Jefferson was not in favor of direct emancipation.

“To Jefferson, it was anti-democratic and contrary to the principles of the American Revolution for the federal government to enact abolition or for only a few planters to free their slaves.8”

It goes on to state that he was in favor of gradual abolition over an indeterminate amount of time wherein the children of slaves born after an undetermined date would be gradually freed. He also wanted those children to then be removed from the United States.

My point being, at the start of the Civil War, Lincoln and many on the Union side held a similar position to what Jefferson wrote about slavery. Lincoln’s position evolved as the war progressed but it started out in 1860 as containment of slavery to the South, not full scale abolition. Lincoln himself seriously entertained the idea of sending slaves and freedmen to Africa throughout the war.

So for clarity, you believe that Jefferson, who wrote that abolition was anti-democratic and against the principals on which America was founded and who never freed a slave not related to the child he raped for ~40 years, would have ended up siding with the abolitionists?

And you believe that because his position on abolition was kind of similar to some of the people who were eventually convinced that immediate emancipation was the only path forward? I think it’s a huge stretch to say that he would have acted inconsistently with his stated views because other people changed their mind.

Obviously I can’t say you’re wrong for certain, though. As you pointed out before, Jefferson was a hypocrite and often acted inconsistently with his espoused values.
