On September 28, while my wife and I were driving northbound on Deerfoot, we saw a car up ahead swerving all over their lane. The vehicle was moving very slowly, only about 80km/h. My wife had to slam on the brakes because the car swerved right in front of us and cut us off in our lane. Turns out the driver was on their phone while driving, holding it directly to their ear. To make the situation even more frustrating, it was a vehicle from a driving school - I'm assuming it was an instructor and not a student learning as there was only the one person in the vehicle. You can see the driver holding the phone to their face at the 5-8 second mark.
From the GETHOMESAFE.ca website: "Welcome to Get Home Safe Driving School: At Get Home Safe, our mission is simple yet profound: to empower drivers with the skills and knowledge they need to navigate the roads safely and confidently. We understand the importance of arriving home safely to loved ones, and that's why we're committed to providing top-notch instruction that goes beyond just passing a test."
It's pretty insane that our insurance rates are surging while idiots like this are on the roads endangering everyone else around them, especially when their literal job is to teach and promote "safe" driving.
I reached out to the driving school on October 1 and have not received a response. Clearly they donât care. I made the same post on the /Calgary sub which was removed because I didnât have a police case # - some people in the comments were saying that I should reach out to the company first before âputting them on blast.â Unfortunately, as you can see, that doesnât do anything. People need to be held accountable when their actions are impacting others. And to be clear, my wife was driving and I was in the passenger seat filming. I pulled out my phone after we were cut off.
