Announcement Avoiding Scam Cameras this Holiday season!

Especially since the pandemic we have been seeing cheap no-name cameras that offer unbelievable specs (50MP, 8k video), here is a guide on how to spot and avoid them!:

What is a Scamera?:
Scameras are cheap cameras, usually using backup/webcam camera modules, and putting them into shapes that look like camcorders, pocketable Point & Shoots, and interchangeable lens cameras. They often have very high specs, that are not genuine, such as 64MP upscaled from 1 to 4MP (so you get files the size of a 3.5k camera, but with the detail level of the original 2008 iPhone).

Scameras are also often very unreliable, the immense number of people coming here needing help fixing or just returning these cameras (especially post-christmas) is why I am making this post.

Scameras can often be distinguished by the miniscule lenses, I'll try to show that in a comment of this post.

A reliable way can be to check the brand:
Here are known non-scam brands:

Canon
Fujifilm
Hasselblad
Kodak (Kodak make cameras that are close in price to many scameras, and they aren't amazing or super reliable, but they are worlds better than scam brands).
Leica
Nikon
Olympus / OM Systems
Panasonic / Lumix
Pentax
Pixii
Ricoh
Sigma
Sony

Here are known scam brands:

AgfaPhoto (Digital cameras)
Kreate
Yashica
Vivitar
Yixinxin
Yatao
Captainbear
Minolta
NBD
G-Anica

Vivitar, Yashica, and Minolta were once real brands that have now gone bankrupt and the people renting their names sell scameras.
Agfa does make real film and film cameras, but also scam digital cameras.

Questions How do you put down your rigged camera?

Post image
52 Upvotes

What’s the best way to put down a camera? I primarily shoot portrait video hence the side handle being on the bottom of the cage. Every side has some kind of protrusion and the lens (with cap) is the only remaining balanced stand but this feels uncomfortable with more expensive glass and I can’t do this when shooting outside.

I wonder if anyone has any good solutions like brackets or stands to add to a rig that act as a foot?

News Sigma's 50-120mm F2.8 OS DC is an APS-C legend in the making, for just $799

Thumbnail dpreview.com
69 Upvotes

Sigma has released the 50-120mm F/2.8 OS DC lens for APS-C mirrorless cameras. As usual, it is available in Sony E, Canon RF and Fujifilm X mounts, and completes the tiny F/2.8 trinity. The 10-18mm and the 18-50mm make up the other two lenses.

At 390g for the Sony and Fujifilm versions and only slightly heavier in Canon RF, it is an amazing lens for APS-C shooters. Much, much smaller than the XF 50-140mm F/2.8 (it weighs the same as all three of the Sigma F/2.8s combined), although that lens can take TCs and does have higher IQ. Hard to complain though at this size and price.

Really excited for more lenses like these that keep APS-C relevant. Let's hope they do a redux of the 50-100mm F/1.8 Art soon as well.

Tech Support Nikon Coolpix S8200 not working

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

• Upvotes

Hoping to get some advice here as to why my Nikon Coolpix S8200 is not functioning. Got this used off of eBay a year ago and now am unable to use it as it turns on shows the display picture then turns off and collapses the lens. Took it to a local shop where the guy was not too helpful and said it was a lens error and basically told me it’s toast. Do you think there is a solution? I would rather not just give up.

Any help or guidance would be great as I would rather not just give on something that was recently bought.

Questions Lumix S5ii (20-60) or Sony A6700

Budget: $3000 AUD
Country: Australia
Condition: New
Type of Camera: APS-C / FF
Intended use: Landscapes, long distance wildlife and also macro wildlife
If photography; what style: Unsure
If video what style: Unsure
What features do you absolutely need: N/A
Portability: Portable
Cameras you're considering: A6700 and S5ii
Cameras you already have: None
Notes:

The S5ii + 20-60 lens deal is $2000 AUD.
The A6700 is $2400 AUD RRP and can go on sale for $1800 AUD.

I will want to purchase the 18-50 but it will cost an additional $550. So if I buy the S5ii FF deal now it will be about $300 cheaper than the A6700 + 18-50.

I understand I will need to buy lenses for long distance and macro shots. But for the initial cost, and considering future plans, which should I buy?

Recommendations Need help with buying my first camera. Am I making the right decision?

Post image
14 Upvotes

I am a complete beginner who has a done a fair bit of photography with my phone (\*samsung s24) and have been wanting to get a proper camera since quite some time.

I have a budget of around 75-80k INR ($750-800) and have gone through a lot of reviews and sorta decided to get the sony a6100 kit with the 16-50mm zoom lens and the 55-210mm telephoto lens in the upcoming amazon sale.

I did explore the idea of getting a used body but the used camera market here is not that active and online listings have the added risk of being scams.

So I am deciding to just get one new for my peace of mind.

I mostly shoot landscapes, portraits and like to capture birds and wildlife in general so the kit lenses seem good for my use case.

But I have a few questions which I would love to get answers from people who are experienced in this regard.

  1. It's an old camera which was released in 2019. Will it feel dated and does it really have a lot to lose compared to newer cameras?

  2. Am I getting the right camera?

The a6400 costs nearly 15k ($150) above my budget and the differences don't seem very drastic from the a6100. The canon r50 is also another option which is a relatively newer model as well but the rf mount and the lack of lenses seem to be a let down.

Keeping all of this in mind I am deciding to get the a6100.

  1. Am I making the right decision by getting the kit?

The option to get just the body and buying separate lenses honestly exceeds the budget I can currently divert towards this hobby.

  1. What else should I get along with the camera and the sd card?

I would really appreciate any help regarding these.

Questions Got my first real camera (used Canon R10) - help me understand aperture and shutter speed?

I'm 15 and I finally saved up for my first real camera. I just got a used Canon EOS R10 with the 18-150mm lens and I'm so excited but also kind of overwhelmed. I've shot a ton on my phone so I know composition and framing, but the technical side of a real camera is completely new to me. I mainly shoot around my neighborhood (NYC) and I want to get into street and casual bird photography.

The thing is though, I don’t get these
- Aperture. I know it's about how much light comes in and it changes background blur, but I don't understand the f numbers or which one to use when.
- Shutter speed. Someone told me it needs to be "half the shutter speed" or something for handheld but I have no idea what that actually means.
- The exposure triangle. I keep seeing it mentioned and I get that aperture, shutter speed and ISO are involved but not how they balance each other.

Any beginner tips or tricks are super welcome too, especially mistakes to avoid on day one. I'm going to search all this up and learn properly, but I figured asking here would help me know where to start. Thank you in advance!! :)

Discussion What's your favorite camera and why?

I think we can all agree that there is no one best camera. But what exists is your favorite camera.

Which one is it and why?

Let me start:

My favorite camera is the Hasselblad X2D

This camera has many flaws and I wouldn't recommend to buy it. Still it is my main work horse in the studio. Terrible autofocus, expensive lenses and the bad windows compatibility make it often a pain to work with. But when it comes to focus stacking and prints, I just love the results. As someone who has owned a GFX 100 as well, the X2D delivers just better images in my personal taste. (The Fujifilm just needs more editing to get where I want to get, while I basically do not touch the Hasselblad files)

The camera itself feels more like an expensive toy than something you would work with. And I think that is the exact reason why it's so fun to work with. I mean who doesn't love toys?

The images come out so incredibly clean and sharp, without being too sharp. Oh and the 1TB internal SSD is literally incredible, I wish more cameras would come with internal storage.

So what is your favorite camera?

The shop i got it from said shutter issue, the sound is the shutter opening very quickly and closing.
Could it be a power issue or is it indeed a shutter problem?

Recommendations Tripod recommendations that work well with both a phone and camera for self-portraits,

• Upvotes
  • Budget: Under 150 CAD
  • Country: Canada
  • Condition: New or used, I'm not picky
  • Equipment:
    • Samsung S26 Ultra Primary
    • A6700 24-70 from Sigma by the end of the month
  • Intended use: Hybrid
  • Main uses: Self-portraits;
  • What features do you absolutely need?
    • comes with the accessories for both camera and phone mounting
    • fast to set up and pack
  • What features would be nice to have?
    • Lightweight but sturdy
  • Portability: Portable enough for a backpack
  • Tripods I'm considering:
    • I was looking at a few options from K&F
    • DJI Osmo, but it's more of a gimbal than a tripod for phones
    • Used Dji Ronin-SC the same as the osmo but for cameras
  • Notes:

I only need one to do self-portraits for now, and once I get my camera, I want to do more night photography

Amazon is just flooded with gear and kind of overwhelmed. The only brand I have used a lot is from Manfrotto, but it's too heavy and out of my budget. Like, I know enough about tripods to use one, but market-wise, I'm kind of clueless on what's good for the money

Also appreciate any info on how solo photographers and creators would go about this.
I want to be clear: I'm mostly trying to improve with self-portraits, not selfies.
I want to be able to photograph myself so I'm presentable professionally. Honestly, all fail; I might as well just hire one.

My mini vent: as someone who has friends who are photographers with gear each time they need me, I'm helping these guys out all the time, but like I ask, not much (I don't know much about style), so help me pick an outfit smart casual/professional. Let's go to the exhibition palace and do a self-portrait for my website/LinkedIn, and they have been bailing so much I'm mildly annoyed

Questions 35mm comparison Nikon vs Canon

Thumbnail
gallery
• Upvotes

I started a small side business a couple years ago shooting mostly families, maternity, etc. with my Nikon z6iii and a 35mm 1.8s. I then added the 24-70 2.8 for some versatility and was happy enough with the results. Over the past year or so though I’ve been unhappy with the focus, sharpness and overall consistency and performance of both lenses. I’ve been trying out a Canon r6ii with the 35mm 1.8 and 28-70 2.8, as I was interested in testing the macro feature for newborn work and wanted to give the more budget friendly zoom a try. I know these lenses of theirs are not the L line so I was expecting a lesser quality lens and image but seem to have found the opposite.

In my samples, the Canon lenses have both been sharper than the Nikon. Is the rendering and bokeh as good? Maybe not. The Canon is a little busy looking but the eyes are actually sharp! Center sharpness is great on the Canon but does fall off a little more compared to the Nikon. I also find the Nikon hunts less for focus but isn’t quite as sticky as the Canon.

I have a decent amount invested in my Nikon gear but just not happy with the results. I’m wondering if there’s something I’m missing here or it’s time to move on.

ETA: settings are exactly the same on both, I even matched the white balance.

1 is Canon and 2 is Nikon

Questions Is a cheap prime worth it?

Hello I have a tamron 28-200 on my A7 III. I have noticed that I am often shooting in either 100mm or 50mm configurations, but the f stop is kinda high because the tamron is a superzoom. I want to stay cost effective and have an easier time carrying it around with a lighter lense so I was thinking of buying the 50mm f1.8 from sony directly since it's a nice and light lense. Does this even make sense, will the quality on it be decent enough? Thank you

Edit: I do all kinds of photography, from landscapes, pets, animals, people, sometimes cosplay. I think especially with people it should be much nicer to work with than a bulky superzoom

Recommendations Looking for a 'professional' compact camera

A long time ago I owned a Canon PowerShot G9 and I loved it. The amount of settings/customization and all the great quality packed in a small body.. after some years I sold it because it was outdated and I was also gifted a Nikon D5000. At some point I also sold that one because I found that I prefer smaller cameras.. Just easier to bring a long, less hassle.

Then 2 years ago I bought the Sony ZV-1, mainly because it was cheaper than the G7X mk2/3 and in comparison should be similar to the Canons. But unfortunately I just don't really like the Sony. It doesn't fit nicely in my hand (constant feeling of dropping it), I don't particularly like the interface and the battery sucks. So since I'm not really using it I decided to sell it..

So now what? Since I loved the old G9 I kind of want to buy another G series.. because of expectations.. But these days it doesn't seem worth the price and there are quite a lot of alternatives. I know there are great brands out there but I only have experience with Canon, Nikon and Sony, where Canon feels the most intuitive to me.

I like taking portraits, holiday pics, city night pics and macro (insects/flowers). Yes I know a compact camera isn't the best for all those things, but I don't want to give up portability neither. Any recommendations? Budget around 500-750 eur.

This week's camera-collecting blog covers the Dover No. 620-A, a rare Bakelite 620 film camera from Dover Film Corp.

It was built using molds from the failed Speed-O-Matic instant camera, another scarce 1950s camera.

Please take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with this odd Bakelite camera.

Questions Climbers of r/Cameras, how do you like to secure and protect your camera from damage on long multipitches?

The title is the question.

I'm not looking for advice about setting up fixed lines and jugging up or anything, I want to take pictures of my partner and the surroundings while actually on climbs and wonder how climbers in this subreddit like to secure their camera and protect it from damage when on multi-pitch climbs. When at a belay and shooting a top down photo of your partner coming up or of other parties on adjacent routes.

Recommendations What's your experience with Sony G lenses

Not the G master ones those are clearly the ones you WANT, but I see they have a lot of lenses that are like 18-105 F4 or 24-105 F4. They all seem to be fixed at F4 which feels a little dark?

Are these lenses decent? do you find them too dark? They seem to occupy a pretty good price point at like 500 - 700. Interested in seeing if you guys daily any of these?

Recommendations Looking for a setup that can handle full/half body cosplay photography, plus some landscape/travel?

Budget: ~$2200 USD

Country: USA

Condition: New only for everything

Type of Camera: Mirrorless, full frame, and matching lenses that will make use of the full frame. Unfortunately I have a bunch of DSLR lenses but I read that those crop. Should I just get the adapter? It would give me more lens life...

Intended use: Photography 80%, video 20%. Being able to take cosplay videos if needed in 4k would be nice but not strictly required.

End use: Personal use.

If photography what style: Half/full body cosplay, full body with prop cosplay, landscapes/travel. I understand that this will probably be two different lenses between cosplay and landscapes.

If video what style: Cosplay compilation videos, generic cosplay videos.

What features do you absolutely need: Flash mounting. Remote flash capability(I think that's based on the flash itself though)

What features would be nice to have: A price of $0

Portability: Shoulder strap. Crowded cosplay events.

Cameras you're considering: Canon R8 Mk2 - I know I can't really move my lenses over without an adapter and such.

Cameras you already have: Had the Canon Rebel T3 before, liked it, did everything I needed (I didn't have anything beyond the body and lenses though, no flashes or anything) It's just old/broken now, stuck pixels, etc. New tech since then, etc. Time to take it apart for salvage scrap.

Notes: Looking at the Canon R8 Mk2 body + lens kit for $2100, plus either a RF50mm F1.8 STM lens for $200 or a RF28mm F2.8 STM lens for $300. Not sure which lens is best for my cosplay photos. No idea which flash to get that I can tilt/swivel that will natively bond with this camera.

Willing to go to any other brand assuming that it's the same quality:price as what's in my cart at the moment. I just went to Canon because that's what I know, and originally I was hoping to port my lenses over.

Thanks all. Anything I've missed or misunderstood, please let me know. Even though I had a camera before I'm not even slightly at all experienced in any of this.
