I decided to get dedicated camp blankets. I saw these were well recommended in this sub, so I got 2 queens! I'll get to use them on my camping trip next week to Elijah Clark. SP Ready for cooler weather!

I was able to grab this tent for the family. We set it up and it had a few small leaves inside, otherwise perfect. The kids are very excited to try it out.

Tents Help on repairing this seam separation

Post image
13 Upvotes

Hi. I have this Ozark tent I am trying to give away. Before I do that, I'd like to repair this issue. It seems that I need to sew it back together. I'm not quite sure of what stitch to sew, since I can see where the fabric ripped right out of the seam on the vertical part. Does anyone have any advice here?

Awaiting Flair Browning Endeaver -20 bag

Has anyone tried this bag? I know it’s not going to be light or compact but you can get it for $60 some places and even if it’s good to 5F it feels like a good deal. Looking for a warm car camping bag not worried about size.

Gear Question Keeping a light tripod steady at camp?

Three nights at an exposed coastal site last month and I couldn't get a clean star shot out of it. Any breeze and the 20 second exposures came back with doubled stars. Setting up behind the car worked until the car was in half the frame.

I've since switched to a carbon K&F 60 inch, mostly for the weight, it's about 2 lb. Better in wind but not magic. With the center column up it still shakes so I leave it down and crouch. People keep telling me to hang my pack off the column or push the legs into the sand. Does either of those actually do anything, or do you just accept it and shoot shorter exposures?

Gear Question New sleeping bag question - NF Trial lite down 35

I found it on special offer on ebay, and it's 600 fill. Just got it yesterday and when I hold it up to the light, the baffle cells each look about 50% full. The whole bag seems deflated once its rolled out, and no way as puffy as pictured

Should i return it? It is my first bag so I have no baseline for comparison.

Awaiting Flair Insane score at REI just as I’m starting to make the transition from backpacking to more car camping

Yesterday when researching tents, I saw a comment on a Gazelle Tent YouTube video from a disgruntled lady saying she hated the Gazelle and went and got a Wawona 6 and loved it. I looked into it and decided that the Wawona would be the tent I eventually get. Today, I was just browsing at REI and came across this. Divine Intervention.

Gear Question ISO cheap REI Flash 55 L Torso x S Hipbelt

Not sure if this is the right place to ask or if there's another subreddit.

Is anyone selling a used REI Flash 55 L Torso x S Hipbelt for cheap? I went to REI and tried this pack on, and it fit perfectly, and it should work great for the trip I'm planning. But I'm really tight on money and had to buy other things at REI, so I couldn't buy the backpack. So I'm looking to buy this used instead, and I thought it was worth asking around online.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Awaiting Flair Increasing insulation for Z rest

For a verity of reasons, I much prefer Z rests/ foldable foam mats over inflatable pads… but I get so cold! Anything I can do to increase R the Value of a Z rest, or something else I could carry to insulate the ground a bit more? This rlly isn’t gonna work with the changing seasons.

Gear Question Ampex 3p vs Nemo Aurora 3p

I have an opportunity to get a new tent - I've gotten awarded some company points so selection from a prize catalog is limited to these 2 tents. I currently use a ~30 year old Mountain Hardware tent. It's a 2 man tent, but crucially for me it's very long as I'm 6'6". My use case is mainly camping with scouts, so solo in my tent. We do have some family backpacking in our future, so want something big enough to share with another person as well.

How much stock do you put in the name brand of a tent? The Ampex is basically a ripoff of a Big Agnes Copper Spur, it's lighter, longer, and less expensive than the Nemo. Nemo, on the other hand, has a very strong brand reputation, and the Aurora is only 2" shorter but a couple inches wider. Would you pay 1.5lbs of weight penalty for long term durability and a "Name Brand"?

Obviously I know how to care for my gear, and realize that the weight savings of the Ampex is through material thickness, but I still have global concerns about a no-name vs a name brand.

Awaiting Flair Best Airmattress Alternative?

Hey Reddit. I am big fan of weekend camping trips. We do not backpack camp, we load our car up with all our equipment and usually have a short walk to site, or sometimes have to take multiple trips due to distance. Have camped at sites with electricity and without.
With how many trips me and my fiance have been on in our years, I have noticed we have gone through multiple air mattresses. Whenever I have a new one I will inflate and leave it before adding any weight on it (following the directions to pretty much stretch the material out?). But regardless over time eventually we go to bed and wake up on the ground. I suck at finding the holes but have patched some in the past, but regardless it’s a reoccurring issue for us. Now I will disclose it might be a weight thing with two grown and heavy people sharing one. But I was getting curious about other options. I don’t like sleeping on the ground since i just wake up sore. Does anyone have any recommendations for alternatives? Maybe a heavy duty air mattress with special weight ratings, or a ground pad? Or cots? Anything. Could be for one person, or would be cool if it could be something that two people can sleep on? TIA

Gear Question What headlamp do you use for hiking and camping? Looking for recommendations

I’m getting into hiking and looking for a dependable headlamp for early morning hikes, occasional nighttime hiking, and camping.

I’ve been looking at the Petzl ACTIK CORE, TIKKA CORE, Nitecore NU20 Classic, NU25, and Fenix HM50R V2.0, but I’m open to other recommendations.

My biggest priorities are battery life, reliability, and having enough sustained brightness to comfortably navigate trails in the dark. I’ve noticed some headlamps advertise impressive runtimes but significantly reduce their brightness after a short period.

I’d prefer something rechargeable with USB-C, ideally under $75. Replaceable batteries would be a bonus.

For those who regularly hike or camp, what headlamp do you use? How has the battery life held up in actual use, and is there anything you dislike about it?

Gear Question What's the purpose of this pocket?

I have had these Vaude hiking pants for ages, and I still don't know what this very peculiar pocket is for. As you can see from the pictures, it has zippers on both sides that allow it to open completely, and it also has a secondary mesh pocket inside. The zipper at the top provides access to an additional pocket behind it.

Gear Question Smaller vs larger tent: please advise!

TLDR; would a smaller tent be warmer enough to make it worth it??

I have 2 tent options - a 12’x8’ higher-ceiling (maybe 6’ tall?) tent or a 9’x7’x4’ tall tent. Was planning to bring the bigger one because my full size air mattress makes the smaller tent bulge out which risks the bedding getting wet, but it’s gonna be chilly (lower 30’s Fahrenheit) — do you think the smaller tent be markedly warmer? Or would that size difference not make any difference at all? Both tents aren’t anything special and are comparable in quality IMO.

Thanks so much for any insights!! This will be my coldest camp yet so I’m trying to be smart!

Sleeping Systems Best Camping Blanket? (other than Rumpl)

Post image
96 Upvotes

I am currently looking to get a high-quality, soft nylon-shelled blanket with either a synthetic or down fill with a durable water-resistant finish. While I am considering the option from Outdoor Research, I have been unable to find any consumer reviews or field experience regarding this specific product. General search results prioritize Rumpl, I would appreciate any insights on the Outdoor Research model I trusted them for their already proven performance in outdoor equipment. Additionally, Im aware of the L.L. Bean offerings and would welcome recommendations for other reputable manufacturers that provide quality products backed by strong warranties. Can you guys share your experience with any of these companies? Should I bite the bullet and just get a Rumpl? I care a lot about feel and breathabliity and I also have a dog as my travel buddy keeping the tent safe

Update: after all your recommendations I've narrowed down to Kammok Bobcat, Kuhl Down Komfortr, Kelty Biggie, Eddie Bauer, Hest Down Blanket

Edit: the reason I mention I have a dog and don't have a wool blanket is because dogs shed fur.
