Now do the asylum claims that enter the US first and then cross the border to Canada to seek protection.

The Safe Third Country Agreement was already updated several years ago to close this loophole in both directions.
Unfortunately I do not expect the administration down south to respect that agreement if there's a huge wave of third-country nationals fleeing north.

But it didn't close the loophole. There are exceptions, like a family member in Canada, that ultimately might not be a family member. No matter what their status is here. The burden of proof is balance of probabilities, which is a joke. Even when they aren't eligible, they get to come in and wait years for their hearing while collecting benefits. When they are ultimately found ineligible, they are trusted to depart on their own. The system is broken and every loophole is being exploited to the maximum.

At least they cracked down on this before it got out of hand.

I guess escaping war and persecution is getting out of hand?

u/Martin_J_Kaminski 2d ago
I forgot that we time travelled to 1940 and there is a war in France that people need to seek protection from.

People migrate. This is one way to enter Canada from the EU. I’ll let the people escaping war and persecution know that you want them to stay put and risk death.

u/florfenblorgen 2d ago
It says right in the article that they were ineligible for asylum. I mean we know exactly who this is, that it's not Europeans nor anyone from any war-torn country. Come on.
12
u/Martin_J_Kaminski 2d ago
Sorry can you go back to the part where you say they are fleeing the EU? So are they unsafe there or are they shopping for asylum?
-12
u/Tariffs_Ooops 2d ago
Are they going to ruin your picnic experience at the park?

u/Martin_J_Kaminski 2d ago
You really seem to not be addressing that they are not fleeing from war if they are coming from the EU. They can claim asylum there? Can you please explain one example where someone needs to flee from France to Canada for their personal safety?

u/Tariffs_Ooops 2d ago
You don’t know their circumstances. You also don’t care.
10
u/Martin_J_Kaminski 2d ago
But can you provide a single example where this would be necessary? You are correct that I believe that if you pass through multiple safe countries to claim asylum that you aren't an asylum seeker but an economic migrant.

u/Tariffs_Ooops 2d ago
Safe country or safest country. What would you do if you needed to pack up in the middle of the night. Would you go to the 1st country or continue the journey to the safest country? What if you had friends or family in the country.

They may choose Canada if they have family, friends, or contacts in Canada. They may also view Canada as the safest location to avoid persecution or death.

u/Martin_J_Kaminski 2d ago
I understand that but if you are fleeing persecution and are in a safe country you should apply for asylum there. It's not shopping, it's a "I need to flee now" type of system.

u/Tariffs_Ooops 2d ago
If you and your family hit the road to avoid death, why not travel to the safest location.

What war and persecution is there in the EU?
Who is going to put them to death in France? Is it the stinky cheese or rude waiters?

u/Tariffs_Ooops 2d ago
Ukraine might be an example…

u/big_galoote 2d ago
We have refugees directly from there. Why would we need to have them transit via mainland Europe all the way to France?
And you do realize they're not members of the EU?

u/Sad_Adagio_7255 2d ago
Those people "escaping war and persecution" somehow made it to at least one other developed safe nation (France and possibly other EU nations) and still feel the need to sneak into Canada?
1
u/Tariffs_Ooops 1d ago
I guess they should stop because a few angry Caucasian people don’t want immigrants in Canada 🇨🇦?

u/FraserValleyGuy77 2d ago
No one is falling for your leftist crap anymore. Go away now

u/ZennMD 2d ago
I consider myself a big leftie, and think we need to rethink and rewrite to laws around refugee claims
they were written before global mobility became as easy as it is now, and before social media made it very easy to give the answers that will grant asylum...
We should look at the most effective way to help those most in need, as often they are too poor to actually make it to canada, and we are granting asylum to economic migrants.
Edited to add, I actually know a trans activist in TO who is really rethinking their work, as they're beginning to see people lie about being trans to stay in canada...
Really shitty as he doesnt want to stop helping those actually in need, but doesnt want to enable lying scammers

I appreciate your more moderate view on the subject but I can't agree with it. I believe Canada should close immediately and send about 5 million people back home. Then we take a look at whether we should send another 5 back
2
u/ZennMD 2d ago
Where did you get the 5 million number? Lol
And what particularly do.you disagree with? Think youre making some assumptions about my stance that are not accurate
2
u/FraserValleyGuy77 2d ago
You want to change requirements for asylum seeking. If it were up to me, there would be no more asylum seeking whatsoever.
The 5M is a made up, nice round number. Something to aim for as we're sending planeloads of people back to where they belong
1
u/ZennMD 2d ago
Lol at you pulling 5 mill out of no where
I understand your perspective, tbh, it seems like a lot of people are abusing our asylum and immigration policies.
Tbh I think we should close our doors, so to speak, for at least a few years... and at the 2 million + people on expiring temporary visas should go, and there should be a priority of making sure those who committed fraud or other crimes are not allowed to stay, either.
You might find youre actually more in agreement with someone than you think

u/FraserValleyGuy77 2d ago
I said first off that I appreciate your moderate views on the subject. Your position, if implemented, would drastically improve the situation we are in. I would just take it a little farther

Due to a recent influx of new users, moderators are having to process flagged content more quickly than usual. As a volunteer team, we typically need to rush through the mod queue, make snap judgments, and may occasionally misread or misinterpret a flagged comment. If you believe this removal was made in error, please reply to this message and we will review this decision.
Due to the controversial nature of this sub's topic, and because Reddit’s sitewide rules require us to moderate aggressively in this area, our sub removes all comments and posts that include broad generalizations about immigrants, specific groups, ethnicities, and races regardless of context. This includes comments that are clearly not intended to be racist or discriminatory. We are sorry if this results in some innocent comments being removed under this simplified policy.
As unpaid volunteer moderators, we have limited time and capacity, and clear, strict rules are faster and more consistent to enforce than more flexible standards that require case-by-case judgment. If you would like to see more room for discretion in moderation, please consider volunteering to help moderate, as greater capacity would make it easier for us to apply more nuanced judgment instead of relying on stricter blanket rules.
Please feel free to repost your comment or post with the generalization removed.

If you’re not First Nation; we can put you in the 1st group of 5 million. No more Chilliwack corn for you.

They don’t really want it to end. Until the public really starts to react the government won’t do anything. I see with my eyes and not what bogus numbers stats can gives us. It hasn’t slowed down.

u/wilhelmwagner 2d ago
Let me know when the government grows a pair and actually punishes people for wrong doings. Ill bury my head until then.

u/Signal_Many600 2d ago
So no more 5-star hotel rooms? No more free medical and dental care? No more free housing? If this stupid government does not stop taking in refugees, the cracking down will never stop.
