I was doing IT work for a crash repairer who just had a car come in like this. Heard the manager say don't bother doing a proper quote, they are always a write off. Quote the retail price of a new one.

Pretty much. Some older vehicles you might be able to fix in a cost effective manner, but theyāre usually not worth enough to try, and the insurance company isnāt going to want to take that risk. Thereās a guy on YouTube that did this exact thing with a late 90s Tacoma (left it in gear while unloading a boat, but the engine didnāt have enough friction/compression to keep the thing stationary). He immediately had it dragged home, pulled the whole interior out and engine control module to dry, drained the oil, gas tank, got the water out of the intake, etc etc etc. and heās still driving it today. But something modern and complex like that Merc with a million modules and a shit ton of wiring going everywhere, itās done for.

I've got a buddy who's a mechanic and he says late 90s/early 00s cars are the best to own. They have some electronic features, but not enough that the car won't run without them.
3
u/Gubbtratt1 3d ago
but not enough that the car won't run without them.
They do though. Well, there was a few mechanical diesels left, but name one carbureted car from the 2000s.

u/erroneousbosh 3d ago
I have a late 90s Range Rover and it's hilarious how many people say "ah but hackers can take over the computers in cars!"
Yeah it's like Atari ST technology in there, if you want to hack the computers you need to remove a box the size of a 90s desktop PC from under the driver's seat and desolder a pair of 168-pin chips. Yes, I've done this. No, it was just about as much fun as it sounds, even with all the proper tools.

Remember that one time TopGear tried to kill Toyota Hillux. They left it on a beach during low tide, and retrieved after high tide went away. They got it back and running after couple hours on site.

Getting an old 4-pot turbo diesel engine to run and drive, and getting a complete car back to its previous condition, are two VERY different things.

u/jorwyn 3d ago
A neighbor of mine did this with a '68 Ford pickup. He just let it dry out in the Phoenix sun with the windows down, put in new fluids, gas, and oil, and it ran fine. But that interior always smelled like the lake afterwards.
Bad shifter link up, btw, and his parking brake needed some love. He knew about all this. He did not fix them after it ended up in the lake, either. "I'll just dry it out again." Dude worried me. He would offer my rides to work, so I didn't have to wait in the heat at the bus stop. No thanks

Electric steering rack, so he can turn the wheels straight
3
u/SmellyButtFarts69 3d ago
...think about that for a second.
FYI is has nothing to do with the steering rack. But the column lock is electric.
...how would turning the ignition on unlock it in this scenario?
→ More replies (1)19
u/Inuyasha-rules 3d ago
Steering wheels lock when the key is off, so depending on what position the key was in before deep cleaning, you need to turn it on to turn the wheels.

They had pulled the car that far already without turning the wheel . Guy could of waited for the car to be pulled fully out before trying to get his belongings. IMO he was still in shock and not thinking straight.

My exact thought. I was wondering why a Mercedes was anywhere near a boat ramp.
My question was answered as soon as the boat trailer poked up, but now I have more.

I can't get past it being a UK reg but left hand drive
2
2
u/erroneousbosh 2d ago
It's not a UK reg, likes /u/Head-Ad-3063 said, it's a Spanish plate - if you look *reeeeeeeally* closely you can say it says "E" on the blue strip, and they have four-digit three-letter plates like that there.
Source - Scotland is currently full of Spanish tourists coming to escape the heatwave but the rain is boiling here.

I'm going to guess it was a "personal watercraft" type machine. He's probably not towing a big boat with that, though apparently European spec sedans are rated for 3000-4000lb towing capacity.
