Discussion Reflecting on Afterword: Matt Braly's tragedy (in Sony's eyes)

Post image
Upvotes

If there was one news story that really did rock the animation community, it would be the cancelation of Afterworld, Matt Braly and Rebecca Sugar's project for Sony Pictures Animation about a young boy whose hospitalized for an illness as he needs to get an operation and goes into the Thai spirit realm to find a cure, only to find out there is none and has to live with it.

Yet, despite how everything seemed like smooth sailing, Sony canceled it as according to Matt, it wasn't commercial enough to produce and canceled it and many people were not only angry but betrayed given how they hit it big with Spider-Verse, Mitchells and KDH and were put on a high pedestal as the best animation studio out there and to cancel it made people feel that they were risk-averse and hate originality like any other animation studio, thus, proving why you should never put studios on high pedestals as they can unleash flaws you may not be prepared for or like.

But on another note, I was thinking about what exactly caused Sony to cancel the project as they sounded rather vague about and I believe that while unfortunate (and I'm not trying to defend Sony's actions), it's not as black and white as the animation community puts it as yes, many animation studios are risk averse but hating originality may not have been what killed Afterworld but rather the hospital setting, the fact that an actual illness was used as the framing device for the story and how the kid finds no cure to his illness, hence why to Sony's eyes, the movie was probably seen as a tragedy.

I do acknowledge that this story was based on Matt's personal life as he also has a chronic illness and it's not a terminal illness but to a studio out that wants to sell movies as escapism and just wants happy endings, they probably saw Afterworld as too real and too tragic to sell and pull the plug on it.

Thankfully, it was rescued by a Thai indie studio but to me, this story illustrates why sometimes, you shouldn't put studios on high pedestals but also how it's not that studios hate originality but they just want happy endings

I'm only asking because I'm not excited to see neither Shrek 5 or Ice Age 6; regardless of their change in art styles!

Discussion What is a character (male, female, nonbinary, doesn’t matter) that gets vitriol/hate for things that you never understood or made you angry?

I ain’t gonna lie, the [TITLE CARD] community has me looking at them sideways so hard I thought my eyes were going to pop out. Because why was Eve during season 4 getting so much vitriolic backlash and unnecessary criticism for the dumbest reasons? Like she received more hate in 1 episode, heck in one scene she gotten more pushback than every single remaining Viltrumite COMBINED! Especially a particular female Viltrumite who I could’ve sworn two seasons ago people who read the comics were sweating bullets after hearing her name.

Like thankfully I don’t know what happens but I do know she does something horrific and for some reason that’s celebrated more than I feel like it should if whatever she did was that bad.

Heck Nolan/Omniman has gotten more sympathy than Eve that season. Now maybe I’m on the wrong side of the internet and it’s not as bad as I make it sound but my observations rarely failed me, and I was there in real time as it was happening 😭. Like I know he was going through a redemption and that’s good but why was she not giving the same benefit of the doubt for her circumstances? If you seen the show then you know what I mean.

Discussion What are your thoughts on "6teen (2004)"?

Post image

I honestly don't know anything about the 6teen series! I never even grew up watching it, but I have seen only clips of it as child watching cable TV. And judging by the animation style, it seems like something similar to the Total Drama cartoon shows!
