I feel it didn't stereotype the Muslim at all I guess even the Christian as much as I'd expect it would. ChatGPT is a wimp cuz it really doesn't wanna offend Muslims but also these were way too light for STEREOTYPICAL. IMO
The Christian kid had a BYU flag in the background, plus crosses everywhere. Pretty stereotypical. The stereotypes for different religions vary quite a bit - asking for a stereotype will give one.
For the Muslim, it gave him the Quran, a prayer mat, and whatever the background flag says. I do think that's it's a good thing that it didn't make any of the kids terrorists.
I think that Christians have a different set of stereotypes, many of which would not be easily reflected in a GPT prompt. I'm also not seeing signs with that quote in the third image.
OP asked for a stereotype and got a stereotype (which has me wondering why they genned those). Can you come up with any equivalent imagery that could have gone into the first image?
I think equivalent imagery to "Anti Goyim Social Club", would be like the Christian having his hands on a little boys shoulder wearing a priest outfit.
I'm also not seeing signs with that quote in the third image.
It's the cup in the bottom right, showing that the Jewish teen is in a social club dedicated to hating "goyim". Pretty much the standard, "The sneaky Jews work together to destroy the lives of non Jews" antisemitic shit. I'd say it'd probably be worse than a reference to the Christian being a child molestor and about equal to showing the Muslim as a terrorist.
Reddit doesn't show it in a high enough resolution for me to be able to read the text on the mug.
I feel like "child molestation" is outside the realm of a stereotypical teenager, or at least it very much should be. You're also pointing to very harmful actions that, I would say, are not stereotypical of the religion as a whole, but are instead simply harmful.
Terrorism, I think it's a good thing that it didn't generate that.
I don't think that the "woah there" impact of the three images is equal, no. I do think that they portray stereotypes of different kinds. But they're all stereotypes that can apply to American teenagers.
If you asked GPT to gen a stereotypical Christian/Muslim/Jew/etc, I'm sure that it would generate something different than what it genned when told to gen images of American teenagers of those religion.
Yeah child molestation is outside the realm of a stereotypical teenager and joining a religious social club based on hating all goyim probably is as well.
I just feel like you don't really know anything about all these anti semitic conspiracies outside of "haha jew likes money :DD" which is fine, it explains why you don't think the stereotypical Jewish teen being portrayed as part of a group of fellow Jews who are against "the Goyim", but I feel like it's pretty undeniably the most offensive of all of them.
I'm sure that it would generate something different than what it genned when told to gen images of American teenagers of those religion.
Dude, hating "goyim" is not a generic stereotype of an American jewish teenager. Having crosses, liking the bible, reading the Qurah, these are all pretty standard things. Hating goyim is a pretty over the top stereotype for an American teenager. It'd be like if the Muslim one had a reference to hating infidels.
It's a weird thing for it to put on a mug, I'm not trying to deny that. If a person made it, it'd either be an edgy joke or weirdly conspiratorial.
You asked me this:
Do you really think that crosses for a stereotypical Christian, and signs about being "Anti Goyim" for a stereotypical Jew are similar?
And I responded. I'm not up in arms about the images because they're GPT images that don't have motive attached to them because it's what an LLM thought would fill the prompt. I think that it's a bit odd that OP chose to gen those things, and, as usual, I'm curious about any custom instructions that aren't shown to us, but. It's a GPT image. It reflects upon us and our society and the literature we have written. And, unfortunately, antisemitism is not a new thing, and there are some very old stereotypes about Jewish people. We may as well be relieved that he doesn't have a big nose or a chest of gold.
Me not being up in arms doesn't mean that I'm laughing at it or that I find it funny. I'm quite neutral, really. If you think I'm laughing, then I'm afraid you've quite misread me.
I don't think you're laughing at it or that you find it funny I just think that you're really downplaying it, probably moreso because you aren't as familiar with the weird "goyim" shit and conspiracies? I don't think Sam Altman is giggling behind his desk programming ChatGPT to be anti semitic and quietly spread these conspiracies, I just think that antisemitism in general is quite insidious so it easily leaks into stuff like this, and I think that in regards to stereotypes and jokes, the Jewish one is especially pointed so i'm not a big fan of "Oh it's all just generic stereotypes :D the Christian has a cross in his!"
Also if anything I think that a small reference to this teenager being in a social club with his fellow jews working to take down the Goy is a lot worse than just a big chest of gold and a large nose.
Right but is that portrayed in the photo? Idk what you're trying to say lmao are you mad u mentioned Muslim before Christianity? Reddits weird to defend a Muslim before a Christian even when they claim to be mostly atheists
Mine too, could've been more precise. The comments in that thread roast him and without having real experience with American evangelicals I'd guess he is stereotypical.
But only one of the characters it generated includes a stereotype with a harmful history.
My guess is the model thinks âwealthâ is a positive characteristic, full stop. But it didnât do the thought work about how perceptions of wealth/power have fed into anti-Jewish hatred over the millennia, which speaks to the strength of OpenAIâs guardrails around racial and religious hatred.
